View Full Version : New super duper setup :-)
The operative word here is " Slow " http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
As in the progress of this project, due to a few setbacks , ranging from a defect in the " Clarity " glass , to being badly let down by " Seashells ".
Lesson 1. Dont expect promises to be kept.
Lesson 2. Dont pay untill the job is done, regardless of promises.( I know, but i like to trust people )
Now that ive got that off my chest, to more important matters.
The new system.

Sump Tank
Located in Filter Room, prolly 4' * 2' * 2' , both ta
nks will drain into this , this in turn will flow into a Refugium.
This tank will feed the AP902 deltec Skimmer, and this tank will be able to be isolated and drained for water changes, via gate valves ( shutting drains into this will in turn divert them into Refugium ).
A Phosphate Reactor will be connected up to this tank.
A compartment will be fitted for Carbon & other filtartion medias if required
Refugium
Located in Filtration Room, fed by sump tank . Prolly 4 to 6' * 2' * 2', will contain DSB and Seagrass and Mangroves. Maybe Caulerpa, still researching ,( *especially interested in the article written in A.Aq.Online Re this )

Strewth.....
Just a quickie. Are you happy with the Diamant glass given the extra cost (and ignoring the earlier frustration) ?
And BTW, all those power points in the filter room look ominous. Are you going to install a dedicated meter with digital readout ? Could become a local tourist attraction.
Insanely jealous,
kim
That sounds amazing, lost my way round the system but I am sure you have it sussed. Will the AP902 be big enough?
hi brian
that sounds like one big project, enveous just a little bit http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
anyway you must have a gold brick stached somewhere,oh yeh ,your gonna need a fusion reactor to run allthe kit http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ,either that or a direct hookup to the national grid.......... http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

brian,
looks like the tank is still "flat pack" soory too hear that reg let you down offer is still open
danny
Brian,
Oh no, have you had another set back then? I thought that your tank would be up and running ages before mine. It still could be as I've been told that mine won't be ready now till the New Year now. *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif
Still your tank will be totally amazing when you're finally all set up and running. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Bri, i'm abit concerned with the size of your set-up, i mean its very very cruel to keep 2 clown fish in a tank that can only be descibed as nothing more than a goldfish bowl!!! http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
seriously though, pretty impressive mate http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif did you build the filter room especialy or have you re-claimed part of the house?
Danny
Ta.
Appreciate the offer, but have eventually organised someone local to do it, after weeks of unreturned phone calls , did eventually get Reg last week.
He said cooly that he was just about to get back to me, and would have no prob coming across to finish the job ( he completed part 1 on his visit, building a friends tank ) he was paid for.
Said he would ring me the following day...........
Was I surprised to not get a call, Mmmm.....No
Given up on him.
Lisa.
Well get there , maybe with a coupla grey hairs for our troubles http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

As for the clown, she is a widower, *had her for 3 Years.
Bought two minute little clowns, after a bit of agression and *I suppose sexshifting I had a pair that were inseparable for a Year & 1/2. Then she turned on him , and over the space of a few day's beat the crap outa him, even worse was I couldnt get him out. In my old 6 ' tank with intricate rockwork and branching coral.
A sad story
Though she now resides in the 3' setup temporarily, as she is now picking on a Bangaii C., I noticed Y.Day

UPDATE: Reliable ( NB Reg ! ) Tankbuilder found and due to call tomorrow to take panels away to be drilled , and hopefully return next week to build the thing. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Si.
Well its oooonllyy taken over a Year to get to this stage :), but yesterday opened the taps to allow water from the other interconnected 4 tanks to enterl & leave the main showtank, thus bringing the maintank onto the rest of the " live " system.
Still a bit of work to do, as in read the IKS manual this weekend, but can now start adding livestock, as Acro frags I put in to test looked really happy in there. Still a lot to do though as in aquascaping and commision the heat exchanger and connect up the RO DI unit. Did a lot of the setup myself, as in tankbuilding and con(De)struction :) and Danny did a lot of the plumbing ( did a great job ). Would I do it again
No Bleedin Way !
:D
Brian.
Yipeee.. now the fun starts :)
BTW - you can't away with this.. where are the pics man! :)
Will follow soon Tuan, just need to get iit in some way tidy and u will soon be sick of seeing pics of it U know " Orange Monti Syndrome " I beleive is the term for it. :D

I think you should be posting in the Nano section, with such a miniscule set up... :D
That sounds impressive as hell, how much did you have to bribe the other half to get that !!
Mine was not too impressed when my 'budget' startup went from a little less than 1k to a little less than 2k....Wups, did I not tell her I needed........
You sure you don't live in the london aquarium? If you don't now, they will be coming to you for hints and tips !

Ta Guy's :)
Yeah Tuan, Re: Flames, they are happily cohabitating.
Being honest, I am convinced the key to pairing up these and other fish , that are capable of sex shifting is the method of introduction and PLENTY of swimming room. As it is they can swim around for minutes without happening upon each other, though are now clearly ok with each others company, bar the odd chasing bout.
How long it will last i dont know, but is great to see. :)
brian.
Bri,
Looking good - will Danny allow you to cover the plumbing with sand ?! How long have you had the Achilles, btw ?
James.
Looking good - will Danny allow you to cover the plumbing with sand ?! How long have you had the Achilles, btw ?

The Achilles, a month now, slowly settling in, and getting bolder, though is in there with 5 No. Yellows, One , now four year old Purple, and one Regal.

P.S. Nice star B) you think that you have enough rock to support 6 of them?
P.P.S How's the Achilles doing now?
Hi Brian
Don,t know weither you got my PM but would love to know where I can get a tank built like yours. I was hopeing on either a 6x2x2 or 8x2x2. I live in N. Ireland but would like to try and get things right. I have had a 4x2x1.5 for 6 years but would like to set something like this up. As I am quite new to this forum and have read the hassles that you have gone through maybe you would be able to give me a few pointers in the right direction. I chat even some time on the phone would be really appreciative.
I have been quoted £450 for a new tank and £500 for stand ie 6x2x2 but am not sure of the glass I think it is just standard and £550 for 8x2x2.
Thanks
Erico
Hi Brian
Sorry I don't know weither I should not ask questions like the last post or you are just too busy to reply at the moment or maybe just want to keep it too yourself is so tell me to " mind my own business " so that maybe I can go and find out from someone else in our wee Island.
I just thought that you being a " Global Moderator " that you might point me in the right direction.
EricO
Brian,
Glad to see everything is coming along nicely , although I'm a bit worried about the lack of pictures of your Orange M.Cap (or are you into Orange starfish these days ?) :P
Erico - patience, patience! I am sure Brian will return your message but he may well be busy and not have been on the board in the last few days ;)
James.
Thanks for the comments guy's
Gary, Lisa The Achilles is doing OK, not superb, or alternatively not badly, ( talk about sittin on the fence :) ).
No really if anything , and i hope im right on this , he seems really slowly to be " coming around " still a tad skinny, but is eating better now, before wouldnt touch frozen meatstuffs, then only brineshrimp, now takes all greadily.
Though does not really like the local algaes I collect on the nearby beach that I freeze and offer daily to the tangs, that the rest love. Also not keen on Nori. Mmmm
If only I could find a vegtable matter that it would readily devour. It does graze the rocks and gets I assume a minor amount of greenstufs from this source, and does take a small amount of the aforementioned algaes.
It is clearly a very sensitive animal, much more so than it cousins the Regal, 5 yellows and Purple who are all round bellied and have voracious appetites. Though as you say, it is a truly stunning fish, though wouldnt reccomend it.
I will update good or bad in the coming months, and Ta for askin :)
Lisa, Ill polish off the auld digital over the next coupla days and try get a few shots, speakin of which missus, wot about a coupla pics of your setup, mmm its not as if you are exactly an amateur in the field of photograph :)
Erico,
Sorry I didnt get back to you, beleive me , I have been busy ! In the final throes of serious house renovations, and busy at work. FWIW, I really cant reccomend anyone for a tankbuild, mine was half built by Reg in Seashells, and I finished it, you could try Simon Kilroy in FishAntics, will be open again in beginning December. I will try to help further via reply to the pm you sent me.
I just thought that you being a " Global Moderator " :)
I know it sounds seriously impotent !
Global Moderator , now thats a title, more akin to sorting out world wars than advising of tank builds :)
Anyway
Ta.. James. Yeah I think I maxed out on the Monti Photos, I was finding the constant camera flashes directed at it were afecting its colour :)
Cheers
Brian.
Bri,
wot about a coupla pics of your setup
It's all on my web-site. To be honest the tank's not really changed too much since I last posted in this forum. There's only two new fish in 6 months (there's threads about them somewhere on UR I think) and just a handful of frags have been added. They show good growth but are still very small, all in all not much to show off yet. :D
Regards
Lisa

wooooooooo super setup you have there. I like the scaping especally the left hand side, it would look amazing if you had some branching corals coming out of it like table acros or plating montis.
very nice
Irish,
Absolutely lovely tank mate. I hope you realise that its pics of tanks like yours that keep me going.
But..am I going mad, in the centre pic you seem (according to my monitor) to have a purple regal tang! :o
chris
The damsels have gone "dottyback with a splash of yellow" too ! Shock horror...."moderator sexes up tank pics !".
Even so, I think it would look even better with the blue and, either way, ooooh, it's nice !

Wooo Guy's that hurts ! Just gotta take those knives outa my back :) and splinters outa my ass !
what actinics do u use to get them regal tangs puple lol
...."moderator sexes up tank pics !".
Ok , for the record the ONLY reason reason I have a Purple Regal Tang and half purple Damsels ( Kim , Damsels, as in this spp. are actually yellow on their undersides ), is cause I am not as well versed as others in the finer points of photography. So basically the end result is that fish blue, becomes purple.
I am sure you photography boffins out there are familiar with such an occurence. As for altering pics, please, I barely have had enuf time to be picturing and posting, let alone altering photos ( If I knew how which I dont ) anyway wouldnt be comfortable with posting altered images ( not the band, Claire Grogan IIRC :) ).
So ... Dats Dat !
Brian
How's the fish pairing going? I know you were keen to pair up most of them.
Simon
So So, did manage to pair the following
Flames / C.Loriculus
Flame Hawks / N.Armatus
Gobies Yellow / G.Okinawae
Clowns / A.Ocellaris
Obviously not the Tang spp.
But have five Yellows / Z.Flavescens , and getting a second Regal / P.Hepatus.
Yet to try ( but will in time )
Copperband / C.Rostratus.
Cheers
Brian.
Aaaaw, just pulling the proverbial.
From an earlier thread, your damsels may be C. taupau (you had only just bought 8 of them....) ? At the time some uncertainty....but if they get along okay with each other and you have a positive ID, I'd love to know.
I'd love simple yellow tails, but the Fijian's are, from numerous sources, better behaved. But are they them ?
:)
kim
Woweeee.... you've been busy Brian! Tank looking good already!
Good luck with the Copperband pairing - I watch with interest! :D
Very nice....
That green cap is looking great too, almost as famous as the 'Orange' now I think as the frags have been flying all over the place!
Check-out your frags on my website coming very soon....

Excellent stuff Brian!
Those purple fire fish are just so cute! (i'm too scared they'll go surfing in my tank).
How does the lil pipe fish cope with your tank - I thought they're not suitable for high flow tanks?
Have you got a pistol shrimp for that shrimp goby?
Looking good Brian. Good pics too.
Some lovely pics... Next time you're over, I think there'll not only be a que for your orange Monti, but for that lovely green one to :D Stunning Sailfin Tang there as well... Always wanted one of those, but my tank is a little small...
Tim
Edit: Hung-over typographical errors
looks stunning brian... love the scaping. :)

Tuan Re: The Pipefish they are a pair, and in my setup there are plenty of mod flow areas for them to hang out in.
Interestingly whilst aclimatising them in the bag the female released a batch of live fry, obviously stress induced , but really cool to see.

Don't worry Brian, some stunning corals in those you posted on 31st Dec. There is a general tendency on this board to go silent when you just chuck images at them, they just don't know what to say. ;)
Perhaps to make it easier for them, next time when you post a picture, ask a question related to the picture so people would have a clue on how to respond.
Watch out Brian he will soon be after your old job :whistling:
WOW Brian,
This must be the biggest tank in Ireland - I guess you and Simon would be neck to neck.
Love the tank and great to see that Ireland has a community of reefers which include yourself.
As I am Australian married to and Irish girl I have keft the land of the Great Barrier Reef and now living in Co. Waterford. We need to talk as I need a lesson on tamming the Irish woman to let a tank like that in my house.
Keep up the great work - a true masterpiece.
Once I am up and running I will be hounding ya for some frags of them wicked coloured SPS.
Looks great, love the Achilles Tang!
