Just thought I'd post one or two pics taken of my tank. Progress is not bad though have run into an issue again with my skimmer thats doing my head in- If my latest attempt to get it running right is unsuccessful I will post separately! Please god let it be right now- its nearly reducing me to tears!

Kenny,

Nice piccies of a nice tank. Glad to see the Goniopora has settled in well -- looking good and I see a bit of xenia in the last photo thats doing well too. Keep an eye on it -- its like a weed. Kmow wot you mean about equipment and the trials and tribulations of keeping it/getting it working optimally.

Kenny,

Nice to see the tank coming on well. Was the rock cured before you added it as you seem to have a good diversity of life on there.

Also the Okinawae gobie, how are they getting on? I'd love a pair but i've heard conflicting opinions on them & suitability in a reef tank.

Cheers

Si

The rock is all cured rock- initially got 20kgs from UDA- its only an hour up the road, used this when cycling tank- the ammonia peaked after a day, I had Nitrates about a week later which disappeared after about another 3 days.
I later added another 11kg, which never caused any problems, and a week or two ago picked up some flat bits at Calico, 5kg which again has caused me no problems.
Got some sand from the LR tanks at UDA and Calico and got some really good stuff from John Swann on the board here- lots of worms and stuff. The rock is teaming with life though I have to keep cutting back the Sargassum, its everywhere.
Not seen much sign of the beasties in my deep sand though
Lots of Calcareous algae spreading now.

The Gobies I only added on Sunday- they are good- they like to perch up on the Porites- don't know if they will do the worms much good as they retract when they sit there, but they have not harmed anything that I can see- they are certainly interesting little creatures and a welcome splash of colour.

You can forget the xenia, you can forget the sargussum, it is those grape calupera that will cause you the greatest problem, if you don't remove it now.

Yep- thats Leebot the Trochus snail- done a fantastic job of clearing off the nuisance algae single handed.
Hope there is still enough to keep the old chap going in there- seems OK just now- all the turbos are still present and correct except one who was victim to a snail murdering blue leg who wanted the shell!

The grape Caulerpa has been in there since I got the mushrooms- one of the first things in- its growing very slowly, and not causing me grief right now- I intend to keep macro algae in the sump once I get sorted out- soaking some Aragamax in some old tank water in the garage- so a job for a weekend- then will probably transfer the macro to there.
Given that its early days with the tank and its not exactlt over populated yet- I thinkit adds a bit interest- but thanks for the advice- will remember it! http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Spot on Mushy !

Yup id yank it out Kenneth, it is incredibly invasive and grows at an alarming rate given the right conditions.

Though so does Xenia, I would isolate them both to the sump, or at least to an isolated rock.

Brian.

Fantastic pics!

I'm not well up on macroalgae. What's the brown crinkly one that's abundant in the last photo under the wrasse and snail?

I have a few very small pieces of an algae that look just like that, but they don't seem to really be spreading or growing.

Ian,

I believe that's Sargassum, I had some too in the early days with new LR however it slowly declined over a period of weeks and has never been back, whether that's due to a natural die back or the tangs not allowing it back I'm not sure.

Here's a bit more info about it

Yep the Sargassum is a bit of a pain. It came in on some of the rock introduced early on. I yank out about a litre jug full each week but it seems to grow back. Certainly its much faster spreading in my system than any of the caulerpa!

Thanks for the all comments- hopefully things will improve with time! (and money!http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Actually have a small frag i aquired a few weeks ago in Calico. The lady told me its name but I am not sure I have it right- i tink she said Stylpora (?) Wanted to try a few small sps frags to see if my system conditions were condusive. This one is doing very well and I can see growth already- quite a nice colour too sort of pink skelteton with a purple sheen to the polyps.
Also go a very small very green Acro frag- this is not doing so well- not beacause of anything i've done I think but because one of the Okinawa Gobies has decided this is home and uses it as a perch. If it was bigger or I had more I suspect it would be OK, but don't thnk its going to last like this.

Hi Kenneth.

Looking good m8.....Hope everything settles in well. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Ref Stylpora.....I think she meant Stylopora.......But looking at the picky and from your description, sounds like a Seriotpora.......I may be wrong here.....Its difficult to tell without a close up of the polyps..... If they run down the branches in lines then your looking at Seriotopora but if they are just randomely covering the branch then she may be right.

Nice one m8..

Si.
