James just looked for that thread and couldn't find it, not sure which forum I was in and things move fast at RC The thread and pic posting wasn't started by Gary IIRC so couldn't search for it, some one else will probably find it or Gary will repost on our site, defo worth the wait regards Darryl.

Hi Gary,

Welcome to UR.

Everyone on this forum had no IT skills until they got on their first computer. So we have all been there.

To find out how to upload pics, Go to the F.A.Q. forum.
Open up the "How to use the uploader", this will give you full instructions. We look forward to some pics from your tank.
Please give us a run down on size, filtration, pumps, skimmer etc.

narthur i boarded my fish with my local maidenhead (cwmbran) and the rock went into 45gallon drums with p/heads ect my corals were jammed into a 4x2x2 i lost loads of acropora and other hard corals they were in to confined space? having the first tank leak held things up terribly, loads of stress, not good at all. i had to wait around 3 weeks for them to come back down to sort it out! they did build me a new one, they done everything i wanted! and yes i was more than fussy! 2 weeks curing and then start to fill, i was quite nervous but as you all know it turned out ok. The tanks now been running since april 1st 02 with no losses or suprises.

Hi lisa! yep i sure do, 90 gals a fortnight religiously! i have a 90 odd gall tank under neath with the other 2 sumps, and thats were my r/o and salt go in mixed and aireated few days!
then pump 90 gals out through patio doors(cleanest drains in the street)....and then vise versa at the same temp and salinity, takes about 40 mins.
mr fish yes they are still GOINGGGGGRRRR UUHhh get my drift? http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Garry,
Good plan! You definately HAVE to plan in the water change routine for large tanks!

My WC sump is 169 Imp Gal... so it'll take me 3 days just to fill it with RO. I have no idea how many buckets of salt it'll take each time.. and no idea how long to heat it to temperature! All this to do approx 15-18% change!

Any tips on mixing the salt etc.. quickly?

the advice i give about mixing salt is dont rush! the tank dont like fresh/raw salt mixes. I leave mine in the other sump under the display tank up to about 5 days to a week with a monster p/h to matur, you'll also find after you'v left it , the redox is higher ..GT http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Garry

That is one hell of a big tank, you must find that a piece of cake to keep. I noticed my 8x2x2 is so much easier than my previous tanks. With it being so large and you’ve had it running for a year apprenticeship over so to speak, are you not tempted to change it from the soft coral garden style setup to a SPS style setup. Seems a shame such a large tank would look stunning stuffed full of SPS and a like.

If you go diving on a real reef simon, what do you expect to find? I can assure you it's not all sps. I like my softies, i think they give the tank movement. Although my sps are spreading, eventually they will fill all the gaps. But the soft ones will be staying.

Cam
06-04-03, 23:59
Hi Garry,

I have to agree that soft corals blowing in the breeze do look lovely, but although reefs vary I have found that they probably contain only perhaps 2 or 3% soft corals. Some of the Red Sea reefs I have dived on contain virtually no softs at all. The reef walls seem to have more nepthia though.

IMO

07-04-03, 19:35
The point is this cam, i'm proud of my tank! why change a good thing? my sps are growing like mad, but i would'nt like a tank full of it. The same as i would not do without my fish :D

Cudders
07-04-03, 23:14
Well said Garry, seems some are sps mad to exclude all others. Softies look excellent if done right like in your tank. They have their place just as much as sps in my opinion.

Will be trying sps in my next tank but softies will also be kept lower down :)

Mark.

Garry thomas
07-04-03, 23:30
As said mark my sps are going nuts, the growth is fantastic. But that doesnt mean i want a tank full of them. I'm managing excellant growths of both, and thats with a shed full of fish, which most sps keepers dont have. I'm not preaching but i dont like people telling me to change, what have i got to prove?

Garry

You are a bit touchy about your tank.

I was in no way applying that you should change your tank layout and the species that you have in it. No two reefs are the same which is which is the beauty of this hobby. For all I care you could have 11ftx2.5ftx2.5ft of pulsing xenia if that what turns you on,    if you did go down this route it would be nice because you could have a shoal of blue face angels now wouldn't that be stunning.

The thing to remember about all of this is "One mans wine is another man's poison"

Garry,

I, for one, am happy to see your temperature fluctuations :) (I mean that in the nicest possible way)

My tank, with only a 3ft Deltec Mega Twin light and two 12V 80mm pc fans has been running at about 27.5C during the day rising to 28.5C during the night (I turn the fans off at night due to the noise) - think I may need to improve ventilation in the hood though as there is a fair amount of condensation on the interior of the hood come the morning.

Anyway, the temperature you are running at is certainly reassuring as most other sources suggest a couple of degrees lower.

Temp is a factor, that most are concerned about , at this time of the year Anna. I'm soon to be adding another 90 gals on to the system, which i'm hoping may make a differance. Fwiw................. I'm running out of improvements, on my wish list slowly :)

Garry thomas
24-07-03, 22:52
Tape measure has been out, and the plan has been drawn up. My water change tank 90 gals, 30" cube, is to be plumbed in as part of the system, I'll have to get it drilled first, so it will have to be partially stripped. Also i'll have a DSB in it as well, which i will seed from my other sump. Although this sump will not be illuminated. I will be searching now, for a large tank of similair size, or slightly bigger than 90 gals, for my w/c's. Also the new W/C tank will have to go out in my garage.

Garry what happened to your orp readings since the addition of the new sump ? just curious B)

Garry thomas
04-08-03, 16:14
Darryl my orp went down, as expected. As i did'nt leave the salt mix to age. It's 290 at the mo, normally it's around 350 ish. Also the long pipework running from the left weir to the right sump (10ft long) had a lot of crap in it. So it might go higher than before, time will tell m8.

Darryl
04-08-03, 16:32
Keep us posted on the readings, since adding a 36x30x6 inch deep dsb to my system some months back, I have struggled with my orp readings, although I can't discount the probe being cream crackered. I am just about to bring a 5x2x2 on line with 100lb of aragamud type sand in, will see what that brings. I have a new probe on order but it hasn't arrived yet  cheers Darryl B)

Darryl when you say struggle, what were the before and after readings. Being honest with you m8, i think we rely on these meters, more than we possibley should. Although yours readings were low, did you notice a decrease in water quality?

Darryl
04-08-03, 17:04
Fair point about the probes, Did I notice a difference in water quality ? No not by observation. Orp at the momment is around 370 (if the probe is to be believed) it switches ozone at 350. this is he main reason I use this probe. I am trying to see if there is a link to adding dsbs and falling orp rates, has is the case with me cheers Darryl. B)

I've just been working out the dimensions for the new filtration/tank room.
As follows:
Filtration room 4.6 mtrs long x 2.5 wide, which i think is ample. This is to house, My 5000 twin skimmer, the C/A reactor and 3x1000ltr plastic tanks, 2 plumbed on line, and the other will at the time being, be the waterchange tank. I will have a feed and return pipe of 15 mtrs. 5 mtrs internal to the tank, and the other 10 out to the garage/filtration room. Feed will be taken care of by an oase 7000ltr pump, Hard piped through 1.5" abs. The return, by gravity through 60 mm abs pipe, with a drop of aprox 4 feet. Does this seem /look ok, this must work!!!!!

my three tubs for garage arrived on Friday from Excelsior B) Going to start work on plumbing them in a couple of weeks.

One thing to ponder though, I will have two sumps, one under tank other in garage. Fed from my 5000Ltr/hour aquamedic overflow box, It has two outputs 2500 L/hour capacity each. So one will go to my garage, other existing to sump under tank.

I think I am right here but I should see evaporated water taken up equally over the two sumps now shouldn't I ? And there is no way to only "loose" water from one sump and not the other.

Garry thomas

Deb, the auto feeder, feeds 8 times a day. Plus i feed Mysis at least twice a day. There's no mushy method here :P

Garry,

On the previous page, what is the little yellow fish (well, looks little, I might have the scale confused....could be a medium shark...) a bit left of centre, swimming half way up in the pikky where you say "clear now" (I think it's you post 4 this time ? ) ? Is it one of the pesky acro-destroying gobies, or something more friendly ?

Second, do you have more than one specie of chromis .... they look different colours, maybe it's how they are catching the light ?

And that's another gorgeous sumptuous pikky.

kim

ps

I'm personally a fan of SPS (it's the shapes for me....tho' blue is also nicer than brown....), but have to say that in some ways it's also a pity that one of the champions of softies seems to be moving over.

Garry thomas
22-08-03, 08:25
Kim that is the monster acro eating goby, well one of them anyway. they are gobiodon okinawee. And yes, i have 3 differant spcs of chromis, nicely spotted.
Kim that camera and tripod, have made a differance to the picy's. Still got a lot to learn about it tho.

22-08-03, 08:29

Gary

im green with envy as usual when thinking about your tank m8. :P

I note you said you re organised a bit of it recently. I only have a small tank in comparison to yours and worry about re-organising the rockwork. Emm and I are talking about buying some more lr to fill in all the little nooks and crannies where we can see through or see the frame holding the rock but im worried about fiddling around in the tank so much.

Do you think it has any lasting problems for the inmates, more the fish im thinking of at this stage? Oh and i will have to watch out for leo, the dwarf lionfish, only small but doesnt seem to giv e s**t how close i get to him he aint afraid!!

Laslty I'm gonna get me 35mm camera outta the loft this weekend and see if i cant relpicate some of your piccies in spirit at least!!

Garry even though i have seen your tank many times it keeps on amazing me especially the amount of growth and colouration you have in you SPS.

Its a great example of how to keep a mixed reef tank becuase it has SPS, LPS softies and loads of thriving fish all in superb health.

Now iv heard loads about this new cam and your last pics are great, have you tried any macro shots of your SPS because the different colouration is amazing even under 6500k, so lets see some more photos.....

Keep up the good work and thanks for the help,

Thanks ant, i'm going to try a little experiment with my lighting. I'm going to try 10'000k blv's in halides 2+4, to see if the sps colour up any differantly. B)

My little experiment has started as from thursday sep12th, i have fitted the 10'000k blvs's in 2+ 4 halide. i'll take some shots tommorrow, and then compare the growth, and colouration, in a month.

Garry thomas

Well as from today, the 22nd of sept i have changed all the halides to 10.000blv.s. here's some shots. this acro has changed colour in 10 days under the original 10.oooks, from the 12th

That first acro is stunning, tell me when you frag it ;)

The large acro frag you gave me off the sandbed it great now, they tips are turning purple.

Have you fraged the blue stag and the porities yet m8?

The 400ws are the dogs dangleys, and i do prefer the llok of 10,000k.

This is my tank, i picked up today, a 6x2x2. I will use this for my waterchanges, until i get the filtration room sorted in the garage. I will probally use it then as a large refugium/DSB. MMMMMmm could also be classed as a wrong way round tank?

Garry thomas

Ah but thats special tape, lot less likely to get damaged in my garage. The tanks i have damaged out there, through looking right through them

30-09-03, 16:01
Garry, where did you get that tank from? It looks as if the same person built as my 5x2x2, double layered bottom, thick support braces and the background stuck the outside at the back, done in two sections, instead of using a 2' roll. Even the colour backing is the same, do you know where it came from originally?

David

Garry thomas
30-09-03, 16:11
David i was told it was a seabrey tank, if the spelling is correct? but i know the backing was fitted by TAC, as they do the same on all there tanks.
