I have a juwel 180 wonderful tank if you don't like nice lights or sumps

ok the sides are two high for most overflows ive seen so i was thinking about turning that huge eyesore of an internal filter in to a wonderful spiffy internal overflow.
i was thinking of like a tube over the edge down to the bottom then staight up as a sort of durso stand pipe with a u at the top.
how many problems can every one see with this?
is there any way to hold the siphon with this sort of thing?

oo oo ive just thought of something, if i glued an external box on would a siphon tube fit on the little dip in the hood down into the filter?
how long do they make u tubes

themanwithnoplan,
I am the proud owner of a Juwel 180 too. I too am looking into upgrading my set up and adding a sump.
Will you be placing the sump in the cabinet ? I thought of installing 2 tanks both linked by overflow pipe. Either that or removing the centre member of the cabinet and adding strengtheners to the cabinet in a way that will allow me to fit a tank the full length.
I will be following this thread with interest.

Cheers, Lawrence.

I have have a large space where i have some drawers ontop of which i keep my quarantine tank I was gonna DIY a nice big cupboard to put my sump in there
this is only cos my tank is up stair and i dont really want to put the sump under it because i don't want it down in the living room without it coming down the stairs http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

i dont know about taking out that middle bit hope some one else can answer ( it does look like fairly sturdy wood though)

Hi Guys.

I have a rio300, I dont know how that compares to yours, but heres what I have done.

Removed the internal filter box as its a waste of space.

Added a Amiracle syphon box, flowing (at the minute) into a Amiracle sump that houses the skimmer (all media has been removed) It also houses the heater, top-up etc.

To enable me to add the sump I removed one of the vertical supports in the middle and modifed the door so it is all hidden.

It all works pretty well, and I have had great success with everything that has lived in the tank (see the member tanks section for pics)

I hope that helps in some way.

Nick.

Nice pics mate,

the Rio180 only has the one support, and I don't think it would be safe to remove it without adding some other support in it's place. Maybe linking 2 small tanks by running pipes round the back of the cabinet might be the best way?http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Hello gents, I too have a Rio 180 and am looking for a way of adding extra capacity to the system in the form of a sump. I was curious as to how effective the syphon tubes were for undrilled tanks as air will eventually collect and break the syphon. One alternative method for extra capacity I was considering was adding a sealed container to the return flow from my cannister filter - although this would not allow the same options as a sump, it would boost the water capacity of the system.

If anyone can come up with a design for a syphon box that won't fail, I'm sure they'd be living next door to Mr Saxby http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Cheers,
NM.

Hi,

Just for the record... I have to restart my syphon box about once a month (maybe 2 if I am unlucky!http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

There are plently of different makes about, perhaps some are better than others.

Nick.
