I am having trouble getting my tank to sump overflow working correctly and QUIETLY. I have a 1 1/4" hole at the top of the tank and return from the sump is via an Eheim 1060. I have drilled a small hole close to the top of the elbow connecting the down pipe in the tank. Water level sits at the level of this hole which allows it to draw in air. I have tried another elbow with the hole lower down but water drops level with hole again. Put another pump alongside 1060 with same results and more noise. Can anyone help solve my problem(if there is one. Regards JB

Try a gatevalve at the very end of the return , this may allow the water to back-up in the return pipe.

gate valve sounds dangerous to me risking an empty sump and a very full tank.

i used to have the same problem try floss in the top or a cut out foam innsert slid in the top bout 8 inches down the pipe.
with a lip at the top stopping it going down.
very coarse foam so it dont get blocked very easily

Hi Jock,

I have more or less the same problem with the system I am bulding, when ran a test with tap water it sounded like a constant gargling at the intake of the return.

I have heard about the Durso system but I thought this was only if you have a weir in the tank?

Anyway I hope you have some sucsess and I would be very interested in the results m8.

all the best

MY TANK HAS AN OVERFLOW TO SUMP
I GOT ROUND THE NOISE BY,
ON THE INSIDE OF THE TANK CONECTOR I HAVE USED A "T" PIECE TO VENT THE PIPE AT THE TOP 1/2 INCHES ABOVE WATER LEVEL, BY MAKING A LARGE HOLE (3/4 INCHES) THIS ALLOWS MORE AIR TO BE DRAWN THEREFORE LESS NOISE
NOTE VENT THE PIPE ON THE INSIDE OF THE TANK THEN IF YOUR PUMP RETURNS TOO MUCH WATER AS, THE LEVEL RISES ABOVE THE HEIGHT OF THE HOLE IN THE TANK A SYPHON WILL BE CREATED, WHEN THE LEVEL DROPS THE SYPHON WILL BE BROKEN (IF YOU VENT THE PIPE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TANK IT WON'T CREATE A NATURAL AUTO SYPHON)
SOUNDS DAFT BUT GO AND LOOK IN YOUR TOILET TANK OVERFLOW FOR SYPHON/NO SYPHON SYSTEM
WITH THIS SYSTEM YOU DONT HAVE TO MESS ABOUT WITH
BALANCING OUTFLOW/PUMP RETURN
SEVERAL OF US USE THIS SYSTEM A MATE OF MINE WHO IS A PLUMBER WORKED IT ALL OUT ON HIS TANK
DEAD EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW AND ABSOLUTLY FOOLPROOF
SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU WANT AND I WILL SEND YOU A DRAWING
