I am due to set up a closed system for water circulation.

I have thought about using upvc pipe for the system will ordinary upvc pipe be ok within the aquarium or will it release toxins into the water.

No simple answer to this, some will, some wont, do a search on this board and you should find quite a few similar questions. Best bet is to email the manufacturer of the pipe you intend to use.

Hi Chris,

I have used the Marley pipe as Andy said, I think it is pipe that is made from recycled materials that you can't use because it is made of rubbish (literally).

My in tank pipework is all George Fischer or VDL PVC pressure pipe, you can get it from BSS - branches nationwide or the VDL stuff from Watford aquarium (cheaper too...)

I've heard that Polypipe is okay (used for household plumbing) - it is re-cycled but most of the toxic polymers are removed during the process.

Available at all plumbers, B&Q etc - it's cheap, and comes in both 15mm and 22mm + larger if needed

It might be worth mentioning that domestic waste pipe (like you get under your sink) although made from high grade material, often contains fungicides and should not be used on a reef tank

There is a very simple answer to this important question. DON'T take risks with plastic pipe in your tank. If you are not 100% sure don't use it. Only use food grade plastic. Solvent weld ABS as used in the food industry is the plastic to use in aquariums. You know it makes sense. http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Les

Thanks les and everyone else for theihelp, how can I check whether the Marley pipe is Food Grade?

Also some of the Marley Fittings are made of Nickel and Brass alloy. I have assumed this is probably not OK even if it is outside the tank. Is this correct? as they make an excellent flow control manifold that could be usefull.

Cheers Guys.

Use NO metal fittings where contact with salt water is possible. If you want to find out about Marley, ask them (phone, email etc). I agree with Les, use ABS with solvent weld fittings. Costs a lot but hey thats reef keeping.

I'm trying to plumb in a fluidised filter would like to use 20mm OD pipe. Can only find 22mm stuff as mentioned in discussion.
Any ideas where pipes and elbows used in a turboflotor 1000 come from ?

If you do search on forum some one was looking for some pipe and they rang Marley and they told them that the pipe is safe with sea water and fish due to it being up to food grade standard .

But only use the equator range of pipe no other give them a ring .

Dudsey,

20mm is a standard size for the expensive ABS / PVC solvent weld pressure pipe ranges. Les says ABS - food grade, I use PVC, also food grade (suitable for potable water anyway) and it is slightly cheaper. Try Danny at Watford aquarium - his VDL range is the cheapest I have found (although you take pot luck with his order picking sometimes! - link at the top of the page)

If you want ABS on Les' recommendation, try BSS - they also do the George Fischer stuff that RS do (slightly cheaper)

RS do the Geroge Fischer PVC-U pressure pipe. Not the cheapest place in the world but is convinient if you have an account and can pickup sameday from the trade counter. Deltec do the Effast range of PVC-U pressure pipe which can be ordered via anyone selling there products, again not cheap.
