Does anyone know if Araldite is safe to use on the case of an external filter where it will come into contact with the aquarium water?

I had a minor disaster last night when I dropped the canister whilst cleaning the impellor chamber and have cracked the case. Since a replacement case is £40 and a new filter twice that I was wondering whether I could try a repair.

Cheers

Mike,
Not too sure if Araldite is 'inert', but if it isn't, I suppose you could always use one of those proper two-part epoxy resins that is used for rock work layouts.

Mike, Don't risk it. I know of a few people who have used it and have experienced bad results using it from it going gooy to it unsticking from plastic. Have you considred supper glue? or a proper plastic cement? http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Les

Mike,

What make of canister filter is it? Do you know what sort of plastic it is? I've a feeling that Fluval canisters are polypropylene, which you can't stick with anything, but if it is acrylic, polycarbonate or something similar, solvent adhesives will give a good bond...

It is (or was) a Fluval 403. I've opted to get a whole replacement canister filter (not Fluval) for now as the reason I was cleaning it anyway was that the impellor often fails to turn after the power is turned off for any reason.

Yeah,

I had that problem with a fluval as well - to be honest quite a lot of pumps or powerheads if they are run for a long period of time fail to start - regular stop / start seems to keep them a bit cleaner, so don't be suprised if you get the same problem... just be careful not to drop it next time http://www.ultimatereef.net/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Sorry clegggs, with 3Gs? silicone is not the best when it comes to sticking to plastic certainly not something like a P/filter canister. If you use this it WILL leak sooner rather than later.
A good plastics adhesive is probably the safest glue/bond to use. However you need to make sure you know what plastic you want to glue to ensure you get the right one, Les.
