View Full Version : Diy kalk stirrer
Hi All
I would like to drip Kalk to my tank via the return section of my sump. Not got the money for an expensive new piece of kit so was thinking of a DIY project.
Can anyone give me any good ideas and ways to do this. I would like to keep it as simple as possible.
If you can point me in the way of a site with ideas and diagrams would much appreciate it
Cheers All

Details of the stirrer are halfway down the page

You might like to try my idea, made from a spaghetti jar, pic below:

You put the kalk in the top and it falls down under the funnel. I had the powerhead hooked up to a float switch. When the water in the tank dropped, the float switched switched on the powerhead to mix. At the same time, it switched on a powerhead in a container of freshwater thet pumped into the kalk stirrer. This entered under the funnel, pushing out clear pure kalk which was above the funnel. The funnel held all the cloudy white kalk under the funnel and only the clear kalk above the funnel was dosed to the tank.
The 2 non return valves keep the jar air tight and also restricted the small minijet pump to only supply at a drip rate.
Works really well and dead simple.

FWIW apart from the actual stirrer, looking at the Deltec KM500 it is very basic, nothing more than a 90 degree elbow near the top which the kalk goes into the tank just by gravity, the ro water entering below the kalk at the bottom to ensure a decent mixture. the unit isnt sealed at all. replace the stirrer for a powerhead as tim suggests and you have almost (maybe better?) stirrer than the deltec one (by the way AquaMedic mixers use nothing more than a powerhead to mix for want of a better word.)
Cheers
