View Full Version : Drilling
My empty 6ft tank that i just cant sell, i am likely to end up keeping it and turning it into a reef setup.
I want the holes for the weirs and rturn to be in the back rather than the base, may question is how big to the holes need to be??
Is it dependant on pump sizes etc

Hi Whacky.
IMO if your gonna drill the back. go for two 55mm for overflows which will accept either a 2" or 40mm bulkhead fitting, and two 30mm holes for either 1" or 22mm bulkheads for the returns.
Have alook at the DIY section on my website under overflow weirs and youll see what i mean, there is a full plumbing schematic at the bottom of the circulation page in the H&T section as well.
Cheers

Thanks si great site,
Where are the holes in relation to the tank dimension the top of the outlet weir is obviouslt at water level with the hole slightly lower and then the inlet hole is lower than that?
All i need to do now is find someone who will drill the holes or a drill to drill them

Hi Whacky.
Yep you got it, although the hight you put the returns is entirely up to you. remember that whatever hight you put the return holes at, is the hight that your tank will back syphon to(to the sump) unless you fit a syphon break or flap valve in line to break the flow when the pumps go off.

Si.
Syphon break what exactly is one of those??
