View Full Version : Drilling in situ
Because of the design of my tank it would be possible to switch off the pumps and empty a side compartment or partitioned bit without disturbing the main tank. Could this then be drilled to accept a down pipe without having to move the tank? What diameter hole? Who would do it (your local glazier? A specialist 'tank driller'?)
Has anyone tried this?
Cheers
Hismit
Hi,
Yes, it can be done - but are you willing to take the risk that it might fail and your aquarium could shatter ? Nobody in their right mind is going to guarantee success and I, for one, would not be willing to risk livestock for it.

hismit, if you are wanting to drill your tank in situ you only need drop the water by about 8" below the hole, the most important thing to remember is to take it really slowly and get someone to spray water or special glass cutting lube into the section you are drilling the whole time you do it! Not done it myself- bottled it im afraid and bought a new tank but I was advised by an engineer whose company does this kind of thing.
just remember I am not saying it is safe or easy but it is do-able

I did one the other day, no problems. The most important thing is to get hold of the right equipment and have a steady hand.

I had considered this myself, but decided not to after feedback. What about getting / using an overflow box?
