Guy's,
The chiller is basically a dehumidifier that was being thrown out by my neighbour because the case was goosed.
The cooling coils sit in their own glass compartment filled with R.O water and works on heat exchange through the glass . The main chamber is fed from the sump via a powerhead. The chiller is controlled by a S2K chiller module which switches the cooler on/off. I suppose I could have it on a timer to come on when the tank reaches the high temps.

Total cost = Nothing http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I had all the bit's lying around.

Just scanned the Argos website. Their cheapest dehumidifier is £99, their biggest £280. That still poses a big saving when you are looking at from £446-£650 for a S2K aquarium cooler. Makes you wonder if it's worth buying one of these units (even from new) to canabalise. You could kiss the warrenty goodbye though.

Aren't you worried about the glass cracking with the constant temperature changes?

Kosh,
I suppose if the water surrounding the cooling coils completely freezes up it may do. However the surrounding warm aquarium water prevents this ,and I am using a S2K chiller controller to turn it on/off. Glass will only crack if exposed to very sudden temp changes also the silicone will allow for a certain amount of expansion .

i doubt it would crack, even if it did freeze the water would rise upwards before it went in any other direction, so would just overflow http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Quick question for you Nessy, what sort of bottle is your co2 bottle? Is that a fire extinguiser? If so where did you get it converted and how?

Dave,
Yes it is a fire extinguiser.
I got it from UKFire in Norwich. It was already converted and full. It has a ten year stress warranty and cost me 50 squids, also 12 squid to get it refilled.

If you want to make a diy cooler remember you can use the guts from a refridgerator. There are mountains of these all over Britain. Also if you are worried about the metal of the cooling coils contaminating the water just paint them with resin, epoxy paint, silicone or some such.
