View Full Version : Rowa phos
I was wondering if anyone had tried using Rowaphos in a fluidised bed type setup?
I am in the process of redesigning a FB to add my Rowaphos to try and prevent it from binding as it does in my Eheim.
Any suggestions would be greatly received. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Hi, this has been done quite a few times on here. If you do a search you should find quite a bit of info. Works quite well, although I have not done it myself yet. You need to run the output through some floss or the like when you first turn it on to catch the dusty stuff. Watcg the amount of fluidisation you will probably have to run it slower than eith sand.
HTH goog luck.
Many peep's use a fluidized sand filter such as the Rainbow Lifeguard 300 to fluidize Rowaphos. Also Deltec now have their new Rowa fluidized reactors on sale. I have one that does up to a 200 gallon tank which cost £98, you need to used a small powerhead or similar to run it. Les.
many thanks for the comments. Will have to check out the postings.
once again thanks

On the same issue I was going to use a external cannister filter to hold rowaphos/activated carbon/polypads
Since I havent done this yet I was taking it on trust that assuming tha cannister was large enought then I could add as many elements as i liked.
I recognise that there are practical implications of overloading the cannister but other than these I have been lead to believe that this is OK.
If I used a fluidised bed approach one presumes that I could only use one subsrtance per reactor? would this be correct?
Mind you not sure how activated carbod would do i n a fluidised bed situation, maybe somoene could fill me in on all these things

I use an Eheim Pro II to house my Rowa and Carbon and it works fine. This goes is one of the trays and in the other i have the bacteria media.
I guess you could have rowa in 1 tray and carbon in the other if your tank is much bigger than mine (100G) and forego the bacteria media.
As for the fluidised - pass

Thanks for your comments. i noticed that theres a similar thread on the reef boarfd and one of the companies seems to advocate the mixing of media in a fluidised bed reactor.
Glen, I see no reason why you shold not be able to mix different medias in a fluidized reactor, or any reason why you could not use carbon this way. However due to the fact that different medias have different weights and particle size then I would expect the lighter media to float near the top of the reactor. In this case that may well mean the carbon lower in the reactor than say Rowaphos which I would expect to find its way to the top. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif Les
Glen,
Thanks to Les's advice and thread I purchased the Deltec FR 509 fluidised reactor yesterday.
I have both rowa and carbon in fine.
There is some seperation of the grain size, but appears to work well

Elliot et al
thanks for the feedback guys and appologies for kind of hijacking the thread.
I am currently trying to get myself a cannister filter to put the media in when i finally get my tank full of lr and fish etc
My 1st 20kgs of dry lr arrived yesterday and im hoping the rest will arrive today or monday. Anyway reckon im gonna have wet arms/floor/clothers on sat or sunday. Not to mention emm giving me a hard time over the water everywhere.
Mind you shes as keen as me to get sommat alive in the tank. Its been full of water, hissing and gurling in the corner of the lounge for a couple of months now.

Hi Folks.
Just a thought to ponder with mixed media fluidising.
Im mid process of building a couple of these Mixed Carbon/Rowa fluidised units from clear acrylic spagetti jars, (one for me (done) and the other for Simon Clarke), The one concern you might have is that most carbon is quite hard in composition compared to the softer Rowaphos media. Its quite possible that mixing the two together might result in erosion of the softer Rowaphos, thereby dumping it all over the inside of your tank/sump etc. To combat this, Ive seperated the two media simply by putting the carbon in the bottom of the reactor at the water input end and then having a layer of course sponge with the Ropwaphos ontop.
Water travels very easily through the carbon and the sponge, and then comes up through the Rowaphos, just fast enough to make it bubble slightly. hence no compaction or erosion. you can easily feed it via either a tapped powerhead, or tee off from a return pump with a flow tap.
As soon as i get a chance I'll be posting the pics and specs on here and at Reef-Eden.......So far......£20.00 for a complete Carbon/Rowa fluidised reactor with plumbing. Its 100mm wide by 13" high, so it will easily hold enough media for a sub 200gall system.

Interesting post, as I was also thinking of buying the 100 quid Deltec.
However, with one of Mr Garrett's infamous spagetti jar designs - I think that I might just be hangin on for the update of reef-eden.
Especially if it's gonna save me 80 notes http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
