Hi all

Don't know what happen to the first post http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/notify.gif but no wonder I wasn't getting any replies http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I'm building a new sump at the weekend and wanted to know if I can use any type of sealant or do some have nasties in them!!

Any recommendations

Thanks

My local hardware shop does bog standard clear silicone sealant at half the price of the 'aquarium' sealant and it is indistinguishable from the 'kosher' stuff. I've used it with no probs and reckon it's actually the same stuff just packaged for DIY.
I'd avoid any of the coloured stuff and bathroom ones for obvious reasons (dyes and anti-fungal additives).

silicon comes in many forms - most are poisonous to fish
make sure you get a grade suitable for aquariums ; it shoud say on the tube
a lot are only water resistant not water proof

if your building a glass sump and filling it, a tenner or twenties worth of aquarium "silly" wont break the bank, like the above posts say silly is available in lots of different types, i dont think i would put bath and shower silicone around my tank.

you may find it ok, making me and the above look bad and stupid, but check on it first - even ring or mail the maker.

But let us know your outcomes and the "silly" concerned.

cheers,

lee

I know a place online where you can get the big cartridges of aquarium stuff for under £6. PM me if you want the address.

Hi All,
I work for a company that batch produces most of the silicone available to buy. I know that there is definatly a difference between aquarium sealant and the standard stuff. I think it is related to the curing system, but not entirely sure (not my department). I will contact sealants when i go back to work tomorrow and try and find out the details

Hello all, ok here it is, basically the Aquarium sealant is gaurenteed not to have any Fungicides in it. The normal types have one enclosed in the elastomer and it is released over time.

Also some sealants are designmed specifically to work with glass, some metal, some plastic.... etc etc, the aquarium stuff is designed to offer high strength adhesion to glass.... obviously.

personally I think that its not worth risking using something even slightly suspect for the sake of a few quid.

Cheers

I use ARBOsil 1081 which I get from my local glass store for about £4 a tube. You should be able to find a local stockist without too much difficulty. Otherwise contact manufacturer at www.arbo.co.uk. Its specified on the tube as suitable for aquaria and I've made scores with no problem.
