View Full Version : Subject of the month (February 2)
Here we go again folks http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Lets see lots of pictures of the lovely Pulse coral. A tricky one to photograph as you need a fast shutter speed to freeze those ever moving polyps.
I'll start it off with a bit of an old picture of an off-shoot of my recently deceased Xenia elongata. It didn't travel very well and melted immediately post tank move. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif I won't be replacing it because although I love the look of the coral it grew like a weed taking over my tank. I did make a bit of money out of it by trading it in to one of my LFS though *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

easy when its on the glass and the camera doesnt need to zoom in.
But nice all the same.
Been attempting to take some pics of mine, but to no avail as yet. Typical as well, I fragged about half of the colony last night. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
2 piccies,
1. Xenia Elongata * Started as a small frag from Danny, and it's grown from there, there's a lot more of it now http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
]http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pulsing Xenia-2.JPG
2. Xenia Umbelata * This is the original frag, there's now about 6 pieces this size

Hi Lisa
Sorry don't have any pulse corals yet http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif . Great piccy again http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .What setting did you use?
Regards
Mike http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Thanks guys *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Preds,
You've got plenty of time to snap a pic, give it a week and your Xenia will be as big as ever. I know how much this stuff grows *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Mark,
The umbellata looks very cool, nice and feathery *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Chris,
Skwinty eye auto focus huh! Well it certainly worked *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Mike,
Ha, I knew that somebody would ask me that question, I err can't really remember to be honest *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif *What I can say for sure is that I didn't use a flash so l must have had a fairly wide aperture (maybe even f2.8) in order to get a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the pulsing action. I only just made it really as there is still a bit of blurring but it does give a sense of motion to the pic*http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif *Oh I would definitely have used a tripod.
Keep the pics coming guys and gals *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif
Regards
Lisa

what are your water perimeters as mine doesn't seem to be spreading.
mark t
Tuan,
Now that's a familiar sight! I have to say that it does look quite impressive really. Sorry T http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I tried to keep mine cordoned off in one area of my aquarium, where it grew really nicely up the left hand side of the tank (I thought it would be out of the way there). Unfortunately it was not content to stay in place and proceeded to drop off single polyps which floated around the tank in search of pastures anew. By the time I located some of the polyps they were single polyps no longer but budding colonies. *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif Is this happening to other peeps?
Mark,
Well the usual parameters really. I was feeding the tank quite heavily so there was plenty of 'food' available. One thing though my pH was on the low side which is supposed to slow down or even stop the pulsing motion of the polyps but it never seemed to make a blind bit of difference to my stuff. It just kept on pulsing. You need to talk to Tuan because he wants to slow the growth down of his Xenia. *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I got a single head of Xenia late November.
This was it after about 3 weeks
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/xenia2.jpg
This is it now- Its still contained on the same single rock- but its completely covered- I like it though would not want any more! http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/tank 4-2-03 007b.jpg
I also have a much smaller Xenia- was a tiny very sorry for itself bit of white "fluff" on a rock I spotted in a corner of a tank at LFS. Took it home- did not seem to be doing too well until I moved it into almost direct full on water flow- it picked up and is growing albeit very slowly- though the stems are much thicker. Not got a handy pic though.

He's not kidding, either!!! I didn't realise how HUGE it was until I got it out of the bag (it was still pulsing in the bag, too) http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Not a frag as such, more a large colony!!! NOT FAIR!http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif
Two subjects and both of them of subjects I can't take pictures off. I've finally managed to get rid of my pulsing xenia. I may have a photo kicking around on a cd somewhere. if I find one, I'll post it. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Maybe instead of subject of the month, you should have subject of the week? Especially as we are on the second subject of the month already http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
As promised, here id a picture of the "frag" that Olly gave me. This would have cost a fortune in the LFS...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kosh42/URPics/20030213/20030213%20Whole%20Xenia%20Frag.jpg
And a closer shot...

Wow folks, absolute stunners. looks like i'll have to crack off some shots of my Red sea and Elongata as they settle down.
Mr Ridley, your expertise with the flashy thing never ceases to astound me......... http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif , although i do feel you have a competitor for your crown in our very own Lisa, so grip it tight my freind........ http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Does anyone know if those lazer gun thingies they use on SG1 are any good at keeping Xenia at bay?http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

heres a little piccy of my xenia frag bought off neil bates not so long ago, the little pearler has grown now to double its size in about 2 months.
pic taken with fuji f401z on macro - from around 1ft away,
fully auto exposure and focus. still struggling to get the clarity I hoped for though!

leigh looks like you've edited the picture with software (tried to get it sharper http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif )

thats possibly because I have andrew! the pic was twice the size and a lot higher than the allowedsize for upload, so I trimmed it and unsharpened the mask. Is there a problem with it?
anyway just for your benefit, here is an untouched pic of the same, on the same settings.

What's wrong with that then? It looks fine to me not pixellated or showing the 'halo' effect typical of oversharpened shots.
Leigh,
Keep up the good work *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
