Hi all,

Can anyone help me.? http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif I have an orange gorgonian which i would like to frag as it is getting quite big. Does anyone know of a surefire way of attaching the frag section to a new piece of rock?

Much help needed. http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hi Tony,

Welcome to UltimateReef

What species of gorgonian are we talking about here? Not that it really matters because I believe that the propagation techniques are the same no matter what type of gorgonian http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

When you cut a branch off you have to strip the flesh off the bottom of the frag and then epoxy it into a hole in a rock. The important thing is not to get epoxy on the flesh because apparently it can lead to infection and death *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

I assume that we are dealing with a non-photosynthetic gorg here. Can you tell us what kind of conditions it's under and more importantly what and how often do you feed it? If it's getting big then you must be looking after it really well. *http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *Any chance of a picture??

Regards

Lisa

FANTASTIC, it works http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I feed the tank with a block of brineshrimp, nori, every day, and half pint of phytoplankton every 2days. Everything seems healthy.

Tony,

Beautiful gorgonian! How long have you had it for and how much do you think it has grown? It's great to hear a success story with these guys because they are so notoriously difficult to keep http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

BTW do you culture your own phyto?

Lisa

P.S. 3 basket stars too, cool! Do you feed them directly?

Hi lisa,

I culture my own phyto in the basementhttp://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/phyto.JPG
I bought a culture from www.cellpharm.co.uk and started it with the instructions on the package.
I've not had the gorg for very long(6wks) but it seems to be doing well. i dont feed the basket stars directly, they just seem to let out the arms every so often. Also, i read an article somewhere a while back that when they are attached to the stem of the gorg, they open up the flesh of said gorg, and eat the juices, they usually stay in the same place for quite a while.

Hi Tony,

Cool! I didn't know that about basket stars I thought that they were primarily filter feeders http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

If it were me then I wouldn't frag the gorg yet, 6 weeks is a fairly short space of time. But if it's grown quite a bit then your tank obviously contains enough food to support it and the resulting frags. Let us know how you get on OK http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Tony
Very interesting I have never kept gorgonians and look forwards to reading about your care of it and later when you propagate it.
Can you get close up pics of the baskets stars I have never kept them either.
Keep us posted on how things go with it and when you propagate it with pics http://www.ultimatereef.com/ibv3/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Regards
Martyn

PS I ll see what else i can find on fragging it to add to what lisa has mentioned.

Tony
I found a very helpful article with pics on fraggiing Gorgonians
http://reefcentral.com/library/coral_prop/gorg/Default.htm

Same as above *but his own site.

http://www.wisconsinreefsociety.org/dave.html

Dave says Almost all gorg can be fragged this way.

Hope this helps
