Hi,
I was in Thailand in June 3 years ago and stayed on Koh Samui. Only did snorkelling there but as I recall it was OK. However we went from there on a dive boat to Koh Tao for some more snorkelling and I have to say it was fantastic :D
Koh Samui is a superb place to stay an not full of high rises and burger bars (although I think they have a McDonalds now  ). They are not allowed to build higher than the coconut palms. I would recommend this island without hesitation, but if you want lots of night life then things are a little limited but otherwise excellent and dirt cheap too!

Hi
Just back from Phuket 2 weeks ago, and spent 3 days on a liveaboard diving off the Similians.
Fantastic ! Comparable to any of the other Hotspots I have dived. Marine life was abundant and unspoilt , Sharks Leopard and White/Black Tip on every dive. And IMO just as interesting incredible corals.
As for Phuket, if u go to one of the quieter areas say Kata Beach, is very nice, not too touristy. Phuket is also a great place to base yourself for other tours/excursions
Cheers

Was there end of Jan, Dived Similans, Mergui Archepelago, Burma Banks and Richelieu. Absolutely fantastic. Cant wait for next year. Burma banks are a bit disappointing as they have suffered from dynamite fishing but the other locations are excellent. I would only do day trips if you are strapped for time. The Livaboards are much better value. If you want details of mine let me know
Cheers jon
