View Full Version : Subject Of The Month (March 2003) - Wrasses
March is upon us and time for a new photographic subject. Good to see so many replies for Chromis last month. :D
This month it's those ever busy Wrasse so lets see as many different species as possible. Six-line, flasher, fairy, leopard, cleaner etc etc.......
I'll kick it off with my porky Six-line or Pyjama wrasse.

Jeez Lisa- how do you get yours to hold still to get a pic like that!
This is my pathetic attempt at a pic of my Pyjama Wrasse- his name is Shan-Yu after some character in Mulan the Disney movie. named by my wee boy! :D
Apparently because he has Chinese looking eyes!
He is a very active fish- never seems bothered by any of the other inhabitants- never seems to eat a lot of the provided food either- seems to make do with stuff he finds in the rock- pods and stuff I suppose.

mandy, it looks to me like a lyretail wrasse (thalassoma lunare), although it has different colours to the ones ive seen, the general shape/markings are identical - often considered unsafe in a reef environment mainly because they get big (10"), they are not generally destructive but can be quite aggressive.
that is if ive even ID'd the fish right
cheers
leigh :P :D
ps lovely fish tangman, I wanted one once until I saw how big they got :D
;)
hi bunglehaze
thanks for your compliment,if your theory is right i must have the most placid, timmid wrasse ever he hasnt grown much in the 4 years ive had him and he hasnt an agrassive scale on his body. thanks again.

hmmm, possibly i have the wrong culprit then - he looks identical like I said apart from colouration. I will dig further though, Mr axelrod's book coming right out!!
Do you not know which flavour he is then??
cheers
leigh  :D
Leigh, I think your ID is correct, but these are not an agressive fish in my experience. The problem I found with mine was that it was hyperactive, it would never stop racing around the tank, stealing food from other fish and generaly being a pain in the ar*e. This caused my other fish a lot of stress and I was pleased to get it back to the shop.

Paul
:o
hi leigh/pavlo.
this dosent sound like the fish ive got like ive already said he wouldnt say boo to a goose,as for stealing food his table manners are excellent,i must have an exceptional wrasse with a good reputation.

:D sounds like youve got a well behaved one paul! most fish have individual personalities so its not unheard of
cheers

Sweet shots everybody B) Tricky fish to take pictures of because these fish never rest for even a minute.
With regards to Tang Man's wrasse I'd say that it is not Thalasoma lunare commonly known as the Lyretail wrasse. The tail shape looks all wrong to me, not 'Lyretail' shaped at all but much more rounded. Looking at my fishy books it looks a lot like this fish

Also seen in Scott Michael's Marine Fishes p296, Halichoeres melanurus. Only grows to half the size of the Lyretail wrasse and is much more friendlier too ;)

Canary Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus)
A picture of one of the four Carpenter's flasher wrasse that live in my system. (I couldn't catch a clear picture of the dominant one flashing, but it is gorgeous when it does - I'll post a pic if I can get it to stand still long enough).
