View Full Version : Getting There

Its been about a month and I've got more than halfway through the set up of my new tank now.

The change over went reasonably well but I lost a regal tang that I had had for a couple of years, and most of my lemnalia spp. colonies. Some of the softies had been showing signs of chemical attack before the change over and I think that housing them in closer confines for a week did for them, the other significant loss was a large toadstool that I had had since I began. An interesting event was that my hydnopora dripped 2 days after being placed in the new tank and the "drip" seems to be forming a new colony. Some of my branching sps had small patched of tissue recession but all have healed over now.

All the pipe work for the closed loops is now connected, although I still have to drill the sump as the return pump a Deltec hlp4040 doesn't always prime from its siphon if the power breaks.

Last week I added the 400W halide to run along side my existing 2 150's. I am delighted with it and I no longer need to have the room lights on in the evening!! Since the room lights use 6 candle type bulbs that blow at a rate of at least 2 a month at about a quid a piece and use 240w of energy that will end up being a generous off set towards the running cost of the halide!

Yesterday I added some sand, and now the water has mostly cleared. So its starting to look more complete. I will have to add some more rock to hide the pipes, although I am considering making some Aragocrete type of structures specifically for that purpose.

All the livestock is thriving and I have so far added a clown tang, and a pair of skunk clowns with a bta which adds to the existing stock of a blue trigger, pair of chromis, bicolour basslet and engineer goby. Corals wise I've added a frogspawn and hammer corals, both of which were too good to miss.

The tank had 2 days of diatoms followed by a coupe of days of hair algae growth, and I'm expecting a new diatom wave now that I have added a substrate.

Still to do is to make the face frame and doors for the stand, drill the sump, modify the overflows to supply the skimmer, install my actinic tubes and connect my calcium reactor.

My next livestock addition will be 6 anthias but not for 2 weeks and then I'll maybe add a hawk and wrass of some variety.

All in all I'm happy with the progress, and will post some pics when the water is fully clear.

Regards
Nic

nic lovely tank, however doesn't all that piping take away the natural look doesn't it bother you or have you plans to build up the rockwork??nic

nicfirth

Yes Nic, its still a work in progress.

I intend screening the pipework. At the moment I'm reasearching making my own concrete rock to construct a couple plinths, arches and caves to stand arround the pipe.

I don't want to buy much more rock and it would be nice to bring the existing rock higher up the tank.

Nic it will look great when you've finished mate, ican see excactly where your going with that one m8. Does look a bit futuristic aftermath with the pipe but when there hid fantastic like the way the flow will be firing. Carals look great and what can you say the arrow goby looks at home already.

Hi Nic,

It's coming along great! Is that extra rock all homemade then? It looks good.

Some snails would take care of those diatoms but I guess that your triggerfish would snack on them eh ;)

Chickened out on making the extra rock, but the LFS just got a great supply of flatish, rock that did the business.

I'm affraid that Mr Trigger went back to the LFS after the great anthias massacre, that and the fact that he would go for the clowns leads me to assume that he doesn't like orange, otherwise he was well behaved with just the occasional nip at a clam. Shame he was my fav fish but too destructive. If I ever get the chance to set up a purely preditor reef, I'll get another.

Lovely.

Best bit for me is in the third pikky down (the original set)....

Who is that handsome yellow/black/blue chappie (or if I'm lucky, chappess) ?

Many thx,

http://members.lycos.co.uk/nicfirth/convict.jpg

this guy?

Know to the family as "The Eel" he (or she) is what TMC call an arrow goby, but is also known as an engineer goby or convict blenny.(Pholidichthys leucotaenia). As jeuveniles they mimic catfish and develop the stripy/mottled appearance as adults. Well behaved but bashful :) with a tendency to rearrange/pile up the substrate, hense one of common names

At full streach he takes up about half the height of the tank so I reckon him to be some 10". I've had him for several years (he's older than my son!) and after the problems with the trigger there was a whitespot outbreak. He looked at deaths door, but now has made a full recovery, thank goodness.

looks good nic, hows the niger trigger doing in the reef so far? any issues of bullying or nipping?
Love the convict too - very nice fish

Hi NIc , you did go the way I expected with covering of the pipes ! My Arrow goby got cloudy eye the other week upt the iodine 2ml extra a day sorted back to normal. still only aprox 7 inches amuch underated fish IMO.
He picked a 1 inch hermit and turfed him out of one his tunnels so funny to watch. He now owns 3/4 of the tunnels whilst a tiger pistol on a small section. Must be like yorkshire down there these days.....

Leigh,

Trigger is back at the LFS due to its tendancy to eat anything orange. Clowns, anthias etc. otherwise well behaved.

Carl

I'm seriously considering getting a couple more arrows, but I'm not sure how well they would mix.

Aaaah, so that's an arrow !

Many thanks, he (or she) is on my list, tho' possibly a little big for me. We'll see.

Hi Frds

Anyone know where i can get an engineer goby please

Nathan

you may have to ask the lfs to get one in specially, TMC supply them as arrow gobies although I don't know how often they have them.

Just a quick update

As you can see I'm battling a brown slimy algae problem, presumed to be diatoms, I think I'm winning. I also lost my hammer coral when the hydnopora fell on it and it got a brown jelly infection.

Other wise its going fine, the copper band is eating well. Mysis, brine etc and even showing an interest when dry food is fed, but hasn't yet tried any yet, but I feel he will given time.

The 2nd arrow/ engineer goby (not in the pic) is settling in well and becoming more bold.

Most of the corals seem fine, but my calcium level is in its boots, and I'm gradually correcting that. So I expect better results when in the future.

Time to let the tank settle and mature a while, the main trouble I'm having at the moment is finding good corals.

Now i may be wrong here as Mr garratt probably will agree but i have marley waste pipe in my tank had diatom Brown stuff like you especially on the pipe its on....i removed the piping lately and it may or may not have been coincidence but no Brown slime stuff....but then again i may be wrong...nic

coming along nicely,

narthur - this marley pipe, is it food grade ?

nicfirth

The pipework is TMC and D&D stuff so it better be OK, it cost enough.

The algae is very gradually declining, and IME when things happen slowly they tend to have better long term results. I'm sure the cause is the normal algae blooms that one gets while a tank matures and you formulate a maintenance regim that suits.

Si,

Still a long way to go but I'm quite pleased with how its going so far, given that I have stocked with fish relatively quickly.

I'm tolerant of the algae. As yet there has been virtually no hair algae but the halemedia growth has been massive, a 12" ball of the stuff was moved to the sump a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure the algae will decline and eventually go if I have patience and keep up the maintenance.

I have quite a lot of space arround many of the corals which I expect to grow and fill the gaps. As soon as I'm happier with the stability of the tank I'll get some frags, to colonise 3 areas of good flow and light that I have earmarked for sps. The aim is that the 1 year on photo will show that it all comes good in the end!

Nic

From your first pic you look as though you have at least 5 holes in the base of your tank, is it strengthened or double layer at all? and what size holes did you have drilled?

Cheers

It looks great. You've done a good job of hiding all of the pipework from you earlier pics

Thanks Keith,

curtisi, Yep there are 5 holes in the base. It does have a double base but I don't know if that was due to the holes as they were part of the designe from the outset.

Cheers
Nic
