View Full Version : Subject Of The Month (May) - Brain corals
Hi all,
Anybody got any shots of Brain corals? That's Favia, Favites, Montastrea, Leptoria etc. They are great corals that can reach huge proportions in the wild.
Here's a shot of one of mine. I'm not sure of the species, they are very tricky to I.D. IMO.

Please post a pic of yours, no matter what the quality. Anything will do :D

i have 2 brains, 1 red and 1 green but both unidentified. duhhhhh
sorry bout the pic i am still in bad algae stages. er
Another 9 month old pic and you have seen it before, this Favites sp is still doing well in the tank. It regenerates any lost tissue extremely quickly as I had various things drop onto it by the crab:

I've had the red one for 2 years. I feed it prawn regularly, one chunk for each of its three mouths. The green on is fairly new (4 months). It has a habit of ballooning about 3 times the size of the photo. It is a very bright green and the pic is a true representation. I was worried for a while that I'd bought an artificially dyed specimen.

Just a quick close up of Pinky... Got this coral from Clearwater a few months ago. He had some tissue missing down one side, but has almost fully regrowm this. He also forms polyp balls now and again. I have attached one of these to a rock and it is now growing into a new colony....

Favia sp. (Moon coral):

A fantastic looking coral with great florescence under actinics. It has grown considerably since I got it and is one of my favourites. It has done fine under 150W MH's towards the bottom of the tank, with gentle current. I target feed it brine shrimp etc. occaisonally after dark when it extends it's polyps.
Platygyra Daedalea (Maze coral):

I have never really managed to get this one to grow back over the damaged part. It seems to be healthy and extends long sweeper tenacles at night, but it doesn't seem to want to grow despite a variety of lighting and current conditions I have subjected it too. Anyone had any success with these? I suspect my lighting may not be strong enough (150W MH's + t5's)
Great pics everybody else. Keep em coming! Lisa, from Eric Bourneman's book the coral in your pic looks almost definitely like Favia sp. The polyps have separate walls (as opposed to sharing them like favites do). Another check is to see whether the polyps are dividing in the midst of the colony (Favia - like in my pic) or around the edges (Favites).
Cheers, Andrew N
Not sure on an ID for either of these, but I think the first one is Leptoria sp.
. . . . . well, I would post a pic if the uploader was working. :)
And here's what I think is Lobophyllia sp.

And here's what I think is a Leptoria.
Another from me of my 2 year old specimen, well with me. Les

All,
I'm going to unpin this thread now since it's a new month but please feel free to keep adding more 'brain' pics :D Thanks to all who have contributed so far, some lovely specimens there. B)
