Whats the correct mixing ratio, for magnesium chloride and r/o?
Garry,
To saturate one litre of cold RO you would need to dissolve either:-
(a) 2.81 kg of MgCl2.6H20 (Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate........this is how it is usually sold....the crystals have a lot of water in them - slightly over 50 % by weight) or
(B) 530 g of pure and simple dry MgCl2.
But somehow I don't think this is what you want....the stuff is really soluble (unlike kalk for example). If you are looking for amounts to raise ppm it's that ol' Professor Hipkiss calculator for you:-
Mg Calculator (http://www.andy-hipkiss.co.uk/)
This works for the hexahydrate. If you have the "dried" version, the results are very very different - you need a touch less than half (47 %) for the same kick.

Thanks for that kim, but thats not really what i'm looking for. all i need is a figure of which to start to mix it at.
ie: 10 grammes mgc12 to 500ml's water. Again this is only a hypathetical calculation. I'll work the dosing rates out with my test kit, once i have the original mixing ratio.

Garry,
As Kim mentioned Magnesium chloride is highly soluble ... make up any concentration you feel like it doesn't matter too much so long as you don't raise the levels by more than about 50ppm per day maximum. You can even just shovel the dry stuff into the sump if you want although making it into a solution and dosing it makes the changes more gradual which is normally a good thing.
Garry,
I have recently purchased mg crystals in 500g containers. I dissolve one 500g container is about 1-1.5ltr of RO and add that to the tank a bit at a time over 2 days. I have a 60ml syringe and as I pass tha tank every couple of hours or so I squirt a couple of syringes worth into the sump. Very precise and technical
I'm not sure where the mg goes in the tank. My level has got down as low as 1020, even after a substantial water change with reef crystals. I suspect this is why (along with coral growth of course) my DKH won't seen to stay stable and is dropping all the time. I am shovelling in Sodium Bicarbonate to help keep it high.
Cheers,
Cam.
