View Full Version : New Tank
Hi guys,
Im new to all this stuff, and I wish to build my own tank,
and save aload of dosh. the tank I wish to build is 6ft x2ft x 2ft
because I have heard the bigger the better for water stability!!!
My question is, what thickness of glass should I go for,
and should it be toughened !
many thanx,
steve c (new member) B)
a 6,2,2 will not cost 2 much if u look around , i would not even think about it, and i think it will cost u just as much in the long run,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, just my thoughts

6 * 2 * 2 should be in 10 mm. Don't use toughenend tho.
But I agree with Keith, it will be cheaper to buy one ready made.
Do some searches on the web and look in the local Free Ads.

I've just got a s/h 6x2x2, which is as new, cheaper than buying the glass, to do myself.
Why not use toughened glass kevin?
How much did it cost and where from Garry?
Thanks Steve c

Why not use toughened glass kevin?
Toughened glass is more expensive.
I have never used it and I have built at least a dozen tanks over the years.
It's just not needed in our application.
Normal plate glass is plenty strong enough for our tanks.

I just got a price of £230 for a 8x2x2, surely you couldnt get much cheaper.
Let me know if you want the number and I will find it out for you.

Nick. Where did you get that quote! I'm after a new tank soon. Got any details? Also do they drill as well?
Mark.
thanx kev, toughened glass was an option offered
by the shop, but in all fairness they did say it would
be far more exspensive.
I've been surfing the net, and there are some bargains
out there, so I will give up on the DIY project,
and buy one instead :D
nickjc, that sounds like a large tank for your dosh!
where did you spot that :P
