Purpose: Treatement (Quarantine Tank or Treatment Tank)
Preparation:
- Usually purchased in strong form, so need to be diluted down for use
- Make your stock solution by taking just 10ml of the Lugols and adding it to 500ml of RO water. Keep it in a glass dark brown medicine bottle and in a cool dark place, the door of your fridge is ideal.
Usage:
- For a background general antiseptic in the QT tank then with no rockwork or sand, then add it every week at the rate of 1ml of the stock solution to every 5 gallons of QT water. Dose it simply by taking a jug of water from the QT and mixing it then pouring this back into the tank and spreading it as you do.
- For treating an infected fish with say a cloudy eye then you can double the dosage or better still add the stock iodine daily at the rate of 1ml for every 2 gallons. When treating a fish add until the problem clears or for 2 week which ever is the shorter time of the two.
- Only reliable tests so far is to use a Salifert iodine test kit. Natural seawater is said to have a concentration of 0.06ppm. When treating infected fish you will elivate this level which is fine or the time we are going to treat.
