View Full Version : Newman's Modest 3ft Tank
Not gonna go into the history & how I get into marine ;) Abit long winded & boring
As some of you may know, I am residing in Singapore. A small, sweet little island located in South East Asia. :D My equipment comes from both the US & the Europe side. Available either through direct order or through local agent <_<
Comments & rational comments are most welcome :)
Tank Specs:
1. Main tank-Made to fit 36" x 24" x 24"(approx 270L)
2. Sump Tank-Made to fit (approx 130L)
3. Custom made Cabinet with lots of storage compartment :P
4. DIY Lighting 1x250W MH + 2x39w T5 Actinic
5. Ocean Runner 6500 as return pump circulation
6. Main tank circulation by 1x6100 Tunze Stream
7. Korallin Calcium Reactor C3001
8. Protein Skimmer AquaC EV180(rated for 800L)
Water Parameters:
1. Temperature - 27°C to 29°C (electronic thermometer)-highly dependant on environmental factors
2. pH - 8  Salifert-no pin point pH meter
3. NO3 - 0.2 (low range Salifert)-
4. Calcium - 400ppm to 420ppm (Salifert)
5. Alkalinity - 10-11dkh (Salifert or Aquamedi)
6. Specific Gravity - 1.024 (Hydrometer)-waiting for my refractometer
Tank Inhabitants:
Tank roughly house 10 Dispar Anthias, 1 Purple Tang & one lazy algae blenny <_<. A couple of snails & 3 skunk shrimp.
Pardon me on the macro algae in my tank. I am still trying my best to pull all the algae out. I am sorry to use some of the common names for the fish/corals as I strongly believe that common names are more easily understood.
Lighting Schedule
1530hrs Actinics ON 2x39w T5
1630hrs Halide ON
0130hrs Halide OFF
0230hrs Actinic OFF
Currently experimenting some lighting sequence that I read. That is not to turn on any light to stimulate a raining day in nature. Still in the infant stage of experimenting. No concrete result yet.
Husbandry and Maintenance
It is always my believe to change water. Main reasons being replacement of trace elements & also removal of unwanted waste. Especially with the anthias feeding requirement, I changed at least 10% every fortnight. As a precautionary measures, I will do a complete water test at least once every two weeks
Half Yearly Regime includes:
- Equipment Maintenance e.g return pump & tunze streams
Fortnightly Regime includes:
- at least 10% water change
- complete water test includes Ca, Alkalinity, NO3, PO4 & Salinity
- Pull off the macro algaes from my tank <_<
Weekly Regime includes:
- Alkalinity and/or Ca test
- Cleans my skimmer reaction chamber
- Empty my skimmer collection cup
Daily Regime includes:
- Clean glass of brown algaes
- Daily top up of dechlorinated fresh water
- Check calcium reactor for excess CO2 buildup(still struggling abit on the tuning)
- Check for blockage in durso, PVC pipes etc
Feedings
I DO NOT believe in overfeeding my inhabitants in my tank although I DO occassionally overfeed. Reason is very simple=>not everything in excess does necessary translate into good things. I feed normally twice a day of approx 5grams of mixed frozen mysis & brine shrimp. The frozen food will be soak overnight in Kent Marine garlic & Kent Marine Zoe vitamins.
Hatching baby brineshrimp has become a weekly chore for me too. Will also buy live adult brineshrimps mainly to feed my lovely cute little mandarin fish :)
Has since stop adding any addictive. Still having a few gallons of addictive in my cabinet
Did try feeding Golden Pearls for my SPS. However, results are not very encouraging :( Has since stopped.
Dose Kent Marine Phytoplankton occassionally mainly for the purpose of my clams & filter feeders but has already cut down on it tremendously as compared to previous time.

Very nice with some excellent quality equipment. Well done!
Set up is base on a modified berlin system with 150kg of LR & thin sand bed. Probably due to my stubborness to believe in DSB
PVC pipes & eggcrates are used to create a big space in between LR so that my return pump of OR6500 can generate enough water circulation in between it :)
The space I am referring to under the PVC structure ;)

Main tank is flow through to the sump via an external overflow compartment. The compartment house 2 x 32" drilled hole so that I can install a 1 inch bulkhead into each of them :)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/4369.jpg
The purpose of the external overflow compartment is because the main tank is already small & I need exactly 36"x24" to hold all my LR/corals/fishes

Hi tuan,
actually my sump includes a small refugium for me to put my greens. Unfortunately, the idea is not successful & fail to materialise. Ultimately decided to do without the refugium section and go solely with my skimmer as a form of nutrient export.

Hi nathur,zimreef,Hawkmaster and Paul Everton,
Thank you for your comments. Hawkmaster, you hit the bulls eye. My the other half is complaining and said that I should reserve a part of my will to my tank/fishes
It has become a obligation to take good care of a reef tank ever since I am into marine. Just feel a little responsible towards the nature :whistling:

 I think you mean SPS :D
I read a thread in the RC on elongated polyps extension at night. Some reefers over there mentioned the longer than usual polyps are for feeding purpose. So I decided to take some pictures of my SPS at night :) On whether if there is any truth in the theory, still there is no concrete answers to it.

Aware? I even know of the street in Sg where they sell them throughout the year! Where they hang them up in little baskets of three around the stalls... each time we visit it's one each and we sit outside the shop eating them! :D
 Just got hold of my refractometer. It comes with ATC(Automatic temperature Compensation) feature
Reading before was using a coralife hydrometer at 27°C. SG reading was 1.024
With this new gadget, it gives me a reading of 1.026.
Should I lower the SG?
SG @ 1.026 is perfect. It's what considered as 'full strength'.

I am having some regrets for a 3' tank. Space is indeed limited. Good thing is adequate equipments are available commercially for a small tank ;) I don't really like DIY jobs. We exchange tanks?

Hi Nic.
My Squammosa does the same, grows one side then the other. IIRC it may be a mechanism to make up for movement of the clam. ie its angle to the light. If you adjust the possition or tip the clam over slightly to one side, the side furthest from the light will grow faster so the clam effectively pivots its growth to bring itself back to 90deg to the light.
Regards
Si. :)

Si,
Thanks for your great advise.
I adjusted the position of my derasa more towards my my light so that it has a more evenly spread of light.
Within 2weeks, the side that has a slower growth actually grown on par with the faster growth :)

I must admit, I am on the verge of surrendering. The macro algae growth inside my main tank is in such alarming rate that there is a couple of times it threartened to overtake the whole tank  A few of my acros has suffered due to it as it deprives the sps from the light.
Dripping kalk seems to ****** the growth a little, but it is never enough to wipe them out. The algaes had spread to some hard to reach areas. Especially the caleupera racemosa.
As my cabinet is 8ft high, there is simply no way for my hands to reach them & pull them out.
 I finally made up my mind to declare WAR on the terrorist! :P I am going to pull up all my LR & my current rack structure(and incur the wrath of my wife for making the floor wet  ). RID all the algaes once and for all. Rescape & create more space to accomodate more acros  ;)
http://images.google.com.sg/images?q=tbn:1iz5FlqTh64J:www.stormfront.org/graphics/war.jpg
My only fear is the potential stress I might create to my acros & my fishes. Hopefully I will be able to do a clean & fast job so as to reduce the stress period they might encounter. I am bracing myself for the worst possible scenerio.
Plan 1... ;) A rather simple rack design which allows me more space at the sandbed which allows me to have more clams
Plan 2.....a little more complicated
Plan 3...... Mobile rack as in it can be remove if space doesn't permits B)
Plan 4....I am more or less decided on this design as it will allow me more flexibilities & my anthias has more holes to swim in/out :)
How are you going to clean the algae.. IME, you can't really completely scrub the rocks and rid of the stuff. The slightest sprig and they'll all come back with vengance.
The only way is control the cause and add grazer to keep them down. Increasing light will make it worse too.

grazers? ;) My algae blenny isn't interested. Perhaps the algae I am having isn't his cup of tea :P
I recently added 2 Sally Light Foot, I can't say for now they are doing what they are suppose to do. But I can say they are doing bits & pieces.
My one & only purple tang isn't of much help.
I really got no idea what grazers should I get. Fox face is out of the question. My fish load is rather high.
Nick
My intention actually is to scrub off as much algaes as possible. Build a structure that enables me to clear any rocks that might be infested with algaes relatively easier that my current setup :)
I am also having the intention to sun bath the current rocks that are very prone to algae infestation for half a day. Then put it in a big tub of saltwater & let the run for a week or so
Well - algae blenny is a bristle-tooth, it doesn't actually go for fiberous algae, more the surface film kind of thing. It helps, but does not remove macro algae.
Personally in your shoes, I would go and get hold of a load of hermits and let them loose (and I mean loads, like hundreds.. if you can, I prefer red legs as they're more "herbivore" than the blues.). Don't feed the tank too much for a while and those hungry hermits will clean it all out for you, and then may be you can trade them onwards.
Was around my LFS looking for hermit crab instead but didn't find any <_<
But I found these which I can't resist the temptation  of getting my hands on it. Immediately 'mow my garden' a little to accomodate them
I guess something has to be done to my algae real fast. I am running out of space. It's going to be very soon my the algaes will grow. I think I will go with the combo. Meaning to rescape my tank, pull out ALL my algaes and at the same time hunt for red legged hermit :whistling: . Here is my latest aquisition
Nick
 I just love the hairy nature :D
From another angle view :)
 I like tables acros. This looks like a millipora table to me. Can someone confirm the ID?
I tried once but was not successful with tables. Hopefully this should be able to survive as the coral is from local waters.
Nick
Upgraded my lights from a single 250W to a dual 250W :D
 My electrical bill gonna kill me.
The bulb used is Blueline 10k on a eballast which is very low in PAR compared to other bulb. Although it is rated at 10k, the bulb is blue <_< Already get confirmation from reefers from the RC, the bulb is indeed blue. I am just wondering why they rate it as 10k.
Nevertheless, I will burn this bulb until it reaches it's useful period is over. It somehow offsetted the yellowish tinge of BLV

Built a new rack. :D
B) For a very long time, I get satisfaction from looking at my tank.
This was achieved after I burn my hols back here with 6hours of non-stop rescaping activities. Pain stakingly taking each LR & acros out. At the end of the day, suffering from strained muscle & sever back ache
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/After%20Rescape%2009082004.JPG
The water column is still filled with detritus & the clam of mine is stress out  Lost a couple of acros in the process :( But I am prepared for it
 This is taken on the 15th Aug. The elegance coral is better looking after the major overhaul. My sentimental bubbles(been with me for 5years) are happier also.
Trying to get my hands on some hermit(red legged)...and also will get a stream arm extension to reposition my stream.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/After%20Rescape%2015082004.JPG
The derasa is happier now. :D Now I've got more space to accomodate my sps :P and my tang got more space to swim

Looks Great.. love the egg crate Rock support.. Gonna try tha with mine i fell.N
Got myself a new toy today :D Ask my friend to buy back from hong kong. Hand carry. Save on shipping ;)
Does this monintor keep jumping 0.0x at any one time. It jumping wildly before settling down at around 8.2.
Panic for the last few days, sleepless night, restless day... Due to my aquabee pump not being able to drive my skimmer, there is a frantic search for a suitable & affordable 3000+L pump.
I don't want to spend too much on a expensive pump because there is a plan to change sump & most probably upgrade my skimmer
This is a new pump in the market over here. Looks good to me...hopefully it can last till I decided to ditch it :P
The specs:-
After my ugly modification to fit into my skimmer <_<

Anyone heard, seen or used this pump before?
Newman,
Are your pipes drilled? Are you not concerned about stagnant water?
Love the tank
e
looking great as always :D I like the idea of using an egg crete reef structure, I may do the same if I redo the tank... :)

Pipes on those rack?
*Gulp*....I didn't think of that :o However, even if there is, what possible harm/hazzard will stagnant water do?
Even if there is stagnant water, it only constitute <5% :)
(or maybe even lesser)

Thanks fuzed. Having egg crate as a reef structure has it pros & cons. But I believe have flow in between the liverocks provide more beneficial values than against it. :)
Planning & Building racks can be fun too

gotta say yout tank looks stunning and the design of the build is fantastic ps not fancy building me one hehehe
Looks a great tank............
Very dedicated, newman and very colourfull........
One question, did you grow your corals from frags to that quality or buy them at them sizes?
Cheers Mark

thanks :D
A little regret on my design though, I should have opt for a 2.5ft width instead :(
With a wider breath, aquascaping will be much easier...the stream will have a better effect...my fish will have more space to swim... :D If only I stand firm on my decision during the planning stage

Mark,
Thanks for your compliment.
Pertaining to your question, I do have both frags & colonies which I purchased as a whole.
I tend to like aquacultured sps more as they are more hardy IMO. Sad to say, aquacultured stuff is rather rare over here.

Jamie,
Clams are my first love. Shh....don't let my wife know :P Don't have time to take some pics of them after I rescaped. Will do eventually B)
My setup is abit risky initially because most people don't really approve. They prefer conventional setup perhaps  I am just glad that most of the things go according plan. :)

A little update on my table acros. It is looking good with some tips growing and the colour lighter a little :D
 Love the colour change in tis acros...turning to yellow. It was previously light brown
My monti don't seem to plate. Or did I get the wrong ID of this acros? The monti seems to spread horizontally. :(
Another acros of mine starting to change colour after I installed another 250W halide although the process is rather slow. But I can see the difference :D
A look at my recently acquired aquacultured acros ;) Some pics are rather poorly taken beacuse my significant other is around. Don't want to arose her suspicion

Aquacultured too - cool! We should really arrange some sort of link to exchange frags from/to Sg. Wonder if it's logistically possible.

Note that the fans blowing the water surface is not turn on :)

Bought this Golden Cleaner Wrasse.http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/w00t.gif for a specific purpose.
A slight outbreak of ich recently. Some people told me they will nibble on clams blah blah blah. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. My clams are not harm in anyway. *Phew*
Hopefully it will start to take processed food one day.

 My eballast just gone cranky :( Tank was lighted on one side of the tank for 3days  Luckily the side not lighted consist of mainly LPS & mushroom ;)

How do you find CV eballast?
I find them a cheap & yet effective eballast I can lay my hands on.
I am considering switching over to another eballast for my the other bulb. From what I observe, the new installation of my additional bulb using eballast causes only a minimal increase in my utilities bills B)

ohhh yea that really is a nice looking ballast for a change , how do u find it works?
Personally I find it works great. Cool to touch & the bulb do run slightly cooler than the one I am using the conventional ballast.
According to my understanding, this ballast can virtually fire up every SE bulb but do have some difficulties in some DE bulbs.
Here are some data on this ballast(done by a reefer in RC by the nick JB NY)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/uploads/post-4-1092798500.jpg
I am trying to lay my hands on the new Giesemann Megachrome 12500K and Aquaconnect 14000K to see whether it can fire up. These are probably the two bulbs not tested by JB NY in RC as they are rather new to the market :D

Hi Andrew,
As stated, the T5s are solely for aethestic purpose :P Just to burn more money for my power utilities supply
But say what you like, the have the most pleasent & evenly distributed colour as compared to MH :) but nowhere to compare about the intensity issue :D

Dec 2004 is the time due to change my bulbs.
Decided to be a little adventurous. Got myself the Xm bulb as it is reputed to have high par second only to iwasaki B)
This is my old bulb BLV 10k on the left & Blueline 10k on the right
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/2x250%20MH.JPG
My first impression of XM 10k is white! But later I realised it wasn't probably because it needs some time to burn in :P The outlook of XM is yellow. About the same is BLV which is the main reason why I used T5s to supplement my MH.
This pic is taken upon installation of the new bulb. It looks whiter than blv because it was probably new.

this yellow fiji grade acros is growing quite fast although it is rather far away from the bulb

Bear in mind I am not implying that the growth are attributed solely to the bulb :P But from my observation, lighting is one of the many factor contributing to it.
here are some showing me no/little growth & lost in colour :(

my final conclusion from my observation, is that different corals will adapt differently.
Some may like it & some may not. As I am facing limited space in my tank, I do not have the luxury to shift my corals around
If you can see...some has given me good growth after using XM bulb & giving me positive feedback. Some has dislike it & has gone totally downhill.
Maybe it's my camera settings, those corals who is showing me positive results has a lighter shade of brown.
Overall, the bulb has given me a mixed results. I think I will continue to use XM 10k if everything else remain unchange :D XM has defininitely given me better growth result than BLV

Nick,
Wow, really neat tank and great colours and growth. Love the idea of the reef racking.
Thanks for the lovely pics.

Hi Steve,
My tank is nothing compare to some. It's a small tank with limited space but I have no regrets. I always maintained that there are some compromise to be made in life :)

Recently thought of having some frags mounted on top.
So I decided to do up a racking system made up of egg-crate & mag-float

Cut off certain parts of the eg crate for the epoxy to go through ;)

Well, it's has not been a pleasent week for me. Besides fighting for my rights over here  , my chiller's thermostat has gone crazy. It's not been able to stop at my stipulated temperature. It was programmed to start at 28 & stop at 26. For reasons unknown, it has been unable to stop at 26. At one time it went on & on when I am at work, only to return home to find my tank temp at 23  Naturally, given the high humidity over here in Singaporem, water droplets starts forming at my glass. Gave me a shock when I reached home to find a blurry looking tank :o Initial thoughts was something terrible has happened
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Frosted%20Tank%2028.03.2005.JPG
The thermostat mulfunctioned has resulted in huge temp fluctuation when human intervention needs to operate an equipment. Not long after the over chilling episode, my tank goes through a heat wave when I forgot to turn on my chiller after turning it off :( It reached a high 29.5 and resulted in two acros lost with no chance for fragging, including my bottlebrush which has been with me for almost two years. A few of my acros has bleeched in the process and not looking well. :( :(
Hopefully with a new thermostat, my chiller can operate without manual labour again. ;)
Time to stock up again

Meantime, I have got myself a Tunze Osmolator 3155 Universal (http://www.tunze.com/deutsch/en-gb/dept_304.html). ;)
It's a useful device to constantly top up evaporated water at a precise level :whistling:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tunze%20Osmolator%20Universal%203155%20Parts%201.J PG
Basically it serves as a top up device as well as a flood alarm B) It comes with a cool looking metering pump.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tunze%20Osmolator%20Universal%203155%20Parts%202.J PG
The metering pump can be making noisy 'grandmother grumbling' sound when it is in operation. But it only operate for a few seconds to a minute at the most. It has the following capabilities:-
Metering pump capacity: 0.9 m: 52l/h, 1.5m: 47l/h, 2m: 27l/h, Hmax: 2.2m
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tunze%20Osmolator%20Universal%20Sensor%20Installed .JPG
The unit consist of two sensors. One to transmit a signal to the controller for water top up. The other is a sensor for flooding control. Unless someone is at home when it is sounded, if not the flood alarm will be of little usage to me :P
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tunze%20Osmolator%20Universal%20Water%20Controller .JPG
The controller is the device that either sent a signal to the metering pump to switch on or initiates the flood alarm when the water level reach my stipulated level.
Great equipment. Not to mentioned the ease in installation for someone like me who is an idiot in technical terms :D

8 April 2005, this marked a sad day to NewMan's reef tank. It is the day I decided to quit this beautiful hobby that gives me plenty of joys and satisfactions. It gives me the opportunity to own a piece of the ocean in my household and the opportunity to meet wonderful people both locally & reefers from abroad. I hate to say this, but I made this decision after two sleepless nights and with a very very heavy heart to quit something that I had build from scratch. All my livestocks has been cleared with majority of my equipments sold. Including my recently accquired Deltec AP902 skimmer, Deltec HLP4745 pump and Tunze TF08 :( Some of the equipments I didn't even have the chance to use ;)
For those who are interested, my reasons for quitting are a combination of the followings:-
1. Work commitments. My company is due for overseas expansion. I am due to be out stationed for weekly assignments at least once a month. In view of this, i seriously doubt I could give adequate attention & effort in my maintenance to a demanding sps tank.
2. Wife mild complain on the power bills. It isn't a strong protest from her but it has done enough to turn me off
3. Parents moving in to stay with me in YR2006. For those who might not know, Singapore flats space are limited. If parents choose to stay with their child, it will be packed like sardines in a can :P Hence my decision to create more space by tearing down my tank.
4. Study. I might pursue further studies for my own future in my company. As time & effort will be even in greater demand once my classes commence, I will have even lesser time for tank maintenance.
5. I might be creating a uproar from my local community if I voice this out. But this is a fact and it did play a part in my decision. IMO, The local marine scene has been tarnished, either by an individual or by some groups of egoistic aquarists who try to monopolise the reefing scene in Singapore. It has leave a bad taste in my personal views. But, things are not so bleak. In fact, I had met wonderful reefers who genuinely share their ideas and reef keeping techiques for 'ZERO' gains. This are the very people I respect as oppose to the opposite group.
As such, I would like to thank UR for their wonderful support and kind comments in this thread and in other threads which I had seek advice on. It's a very friendly place with great helpful and knowledgeable people. I also would like to specially mentioned tuan for his assitance in many ways to me and also to those who had directly/indirectly advice me during my newbie days. :thanx:
The big question now lies with whether I will make a comeback. To be frank, I have got no ideas. I might come back one day or perhaps I will give up totally. But frankly speaking, it is hard to give up totally. It's a damned addictive hobby
To those who might be interested, below are the pictures of my tank/equipments which I didn't post anywhere earlier. Good luck to those still in this hobby. God bless you all :)

Thank you once again, to all for looking, kind remarks and valuable comments. I sincerely appreciate your friendly and warm approach to a foreign reefer like me.

Very sad, but totally understandable.
One of the nicest and well kept tanks I ever saw. Certainly the most colourful!
Good Luck for the future Nick

hi iv`e seen a lot of people give up reefing in my time most of which gave up because they failed
i have not seen many reefers with such talent ( as i have seen in your tank) give up keeping reefs
i wouln`t have slept for a week i think if i had to let that Catalaphyllia jardinei go let alone any thing else
spose you could always start planing you next tank for the future even if it doesen`t happen
good luck
