View Full Version : Anemone Survey
From what I harped on about on another post, and from what myself and others have been asking for- how about all members help with this?
Give us your experiences, tell us everything you can about your nem. I would be happy to collate this data after the natural ending of the post (unless MODS want to pin this for a while), and publish it for all. Hopefully we will see some trends, helpful tips for others, but mainly give us a feel as to what nems really want :P
Please put your experiences down, EVEN if they are bad. A lot people (including myself) have had bad experiences with anemones, and this will not be a bashing thread (I'll ask for it to be closed if it turns into one). Everyone's experiences will be valuable however.
Sorry if the following seems long, but maybe from this we can get some useful data. It would be great if you could complete in the same format too, just to make it easier to collate. Hopefully we can get something useful from this.
Here is the list:

This anenome has not moved from the first day I got it. It eats anything and everything (copperband butterfly fly, leopard wrasse), along with hand fed foods such as lance fish etc.
I have stopped feeding it now, allowing the clowns to do their job, and to slow downs its growth a bit.

ANEMONE NAME: Green/beige BTA...dont' know the full name.
HOW LONG KEPT: 4 years
STILL ALIVE: yes
TANK SIZE: first in 3ft (100L), now 4ft (300L)
LIGHTING TYPE, STRENGTH AND PHOTO PERIOD: 1 year 2xNO, 2 years MH, 1 year MH+t5. MH (6500k iwisaki)=12hpd, t5 (actinic)=15hpd.
ANEMONE DIAMETER: up to 18"
FILTRATION USED IN SET UP: was LR+skimmer, now ecosystem (no skimmer)
SG: as low as 1023, as high as 1029
TEMP: as low as 23oC, as high as 30oC
WATER MOVEMENT: about 30xph from power head, sump return and closed loop
FEEDING: never
WATER CHANGES: was 10%pw, but now about 10%pm
WATER PARAMS: NH3=0, NO2=0, NO3=0(has been 25ppm), ALK=12dKH(has been down to 7), CA=480 (has been down to 380ppm), Phos=0 (has been up tom 0.3ppm)
ANY ADDITIVES: None, not even kalk...although I have added this in the past. I do use a calcium reactor, but only for the last year.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Always has its foot burried in the rockwork close to bottom and under MH. It has a strong current blasting it.
DOES IT PLAY HOST: Pair of breeding wild-caught perc's
It has never divided, perhaps due to not feeding it (although the perc's do feed it). It has however climbed up to the top of the tank on a couple of occasions and ejected sperm (very similar to Tuans post of a few days ago).
It has mangled it self on powerheads on several occasions, one time pulling its entire top (mouth surface) right through a huge hole in its foot so that it looked like a doughnut made of guts. It has recovered every time but while it is recovering it takes no interest in any food the perc's offer it.
While under NO's it had bubble tips, now under MH it has long slender tentacles that only rarely form bubble tips. The percs don't like the bubbles and beat the hell out of them if they appear.
It doesn't seem to harm fish that brush against it but does sting some corals. My montis and some of the acros seem to be relatively immune to it, while other acros and most lps are quickly stung and withdraw from it.
Kev
Hmmmm....only success stories so far ? :o
kim
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. Keep em coming though guys, it is possible that this could make a real difference, give us some usable guidelines, and stop some needless nem deaths.
:thanx: folks!!
ANEMONE NAME: Yellow BTA with fluroescent pink tips
HOW LONG KEPT: 2 years
STILL ALIVE: yes
TANK SIZE: 4ft 100 gal system
LIGHTING TYPE, STRENGTH AND PHOTO PERIOD: 2 or 3 x 400W, 4 x T5 - 11hrs MH, 12 hrs T5s
ANEMONE DIAMETER: up to 12"
FILTRATION USED IN SET UP: LR and skimmer
SG: 1.026
TEMP: 25.5 (Chiller)
WATER MOVEMENT: 2 x 6100 Streams, 4 x Mj1200 on wave maker and 2 x 1060
FEEDING: never
WATER CHANGES: once a moth, 25% RO and DI
WATER PARAMS: 0,0,0,0 Alk: 10 , Ca 440, Ph 8.2
ANY ADDITIVES: None
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Always has its foot burried in the rockwork. Avoids direct MH, and wanders once in a while.
DOES IT PLAY HOST: No.
Notes:
Has been mangled twice by a PH - both times whilst on holiday. First time, he was ripped, second time only the foot left :(
Always repairs itself to its former size.... seems to be based on the foot size???? (hypothesis).
Rarely see it eating... and it does not inflate /deflate like most BTAs are meant to.

Since I started the thread it's only right that I post mine then :D

Back to health now, normal size and bulbs now showing (i believe this is due to addition of the 80w blue light though as they reappeared slowly after this was added)
SPAWNING - added as a survey question.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for that...
As soon as they are settled in they go on and on... Some scientists believe some sea anenomes could be hundreds of years old... Might have to add mine to my will if thats true!

its nice to see people having such a good experience with them - unfortunately there does not seem many loss stories and after using these forums for years now and seeing the amount of ' oh my god nenny in trouble' posts I believe there should be more unsuccessful stories to be posted - even I have one more to do when I get chance but seeing as this is my 50th post tonight im off to bed!

Been in the tank for about a year now, first bought, it was white with pink tips (very unhealthy) and very small, I fed very heavely every other day for about 3 months, I then upped the light from 110 to 165watts and slowly reduced feeding to once a week if that. It is now very large and very purple and looking a millions times better than when I first bought it.
I will mention a book which really helped me when I first bought the nenny, the book is 'Host Anemone Secrets' by Dr Ron Shimek. Its not very thick but it is very usefull and contains loads of helpful information.
Sorry about the Quality of the Picture but it appears to be the only one I have at the moment.
Looking good clarkii!!
Come on folks - we need more!!

Hi guys - thanks for everyones input so far

Hi Guy's
Sorry to be changing the thread here, though it is anemone related.
I have just purchased a bubble anemone with a pair of black & white clowns resident. I will be bringing them all home at the weekend, and was very excited about the prospect.
After reading these posts with great interest, I am a little worried after
reading about the fish eaters. Does anyone have any tips on minimising this
risk and also general tips on keeping one.
I have a small scooter blenny - do you think he will be ok, and does anyone
also keep a mandarin in the same tank as an anemone. This is a fish that I would eventually like to purchase.
Thanks
Wanda
Hi Wanda, The best book I have found for nennys is by Ron Shimek, it is called something like 'Host Sea Anemone Secrets', this will help you tremedously, its very cheap. It is a thin book but packed with really helpful information.
You already have a Dragonette in the tank, the scooter blenny is not a blenny at all it is infact in the same family as the mandarines. I wouldnt suggest having two as they will be after the same food source and if your Scooter is anything like mine it will only eat from my live rock, Copepodes etc.
Mandarines are renowed as are scooter blennies for stumbling into Anemones, it is because they are bottom and rock dwellers, if they get startled they often swim quickly and can end up swimming into nenny's. I would asvice against it but that IMO.

Have we had an overall result of this survey put together yet? Success rates, parameters etc. It looks to me though that everyone has posted success and not many failures?

Divided a month after being introduced in tank and now is host to one clarkii. I have two but the biggest keeps the smaller away. Previously was host to one melanopus clown wich i gave away with the clone anemone.
It seems not to prefer direct light and is anchored by the side of a piece og rock with moderate (not strong) movement. I've heard before that they have a tendency to divide if placed under very strong movement although i never tried this myself.

Will have to let you know! Just bought a long tentacled anemone today! :)
I had only one other anemone, besides rock anemones, and it was a rose, but it only survived a week, after getting caught in a powerhead! I learned a very hard lesson with that one! Didn't know they would climb up the glass to the top! Anyway, have the holes plugged with sponge now, and we will see how it goes! :)
Kate,
If you have powerheads - then you need to remove the anemone..
They are not compativle.... sponge or no sponge.
Either look at new methods of water flow, or return the anemone IMO

ULTIMATE REEF ANEMONE SURVEY
SHORT SUMMARY OF POSTINGS
LIFESPAN
Of all the anemone details posted lifespan resulted as follows:
> 0 months = 5.55%
> 3 months = 16.66%
> 6 months = 19.44%
> 1 year = 30.55%
> 3 years = 16.66%
> 5 years and over = 8.33%
Still alive = 80.55% Deceased = 19.44%
LIGHTING
73.53% Metal Halides(with or without supplemental light)
17.65% T8
8.82 % T5
A photoperiod of 10 - 12 hours was most frequently posted, but where a fatality had occured most did not report their photoperiod.
Of those that did die:
57.14% used T8 lighting
14.29% used T5 lighting
28.57% used Metal Halide (one poewerhead incident however)
FILTRATION
Live Rock was the most frequently used filtration method with 77.78% of posters. Other methods included under gravel, ECO, DSB and internal. Most fatalities occured where UG filtration was in use, but this cannot be taken as a direct correlation. The only fatality recorded where LR was in use was a powerhead incident.
SALINITY
A range of 1.023 - 1.026 seems most succesful.
TEMPERATURE
Temperature ranged between 25oC and 28oC with no correlation with fatalities.
CIRCULATION
The lowest circulation rate was 3 X tank capacity, however, there was no correlation with fatalities.
FEEDING
The longest lived anemones were either fed monthly (or less), or not at all, although there was no correlation with fatalities and more frequent feeding.
WATER CHANGES
Only 2 posted that they did not perform water changes. Both still had alive anemones that they had kept between 6 months and 1 year.
PARAMETERS & ADDITIVES
No unusual readings were given, and nothing out of the ordinary was added to the tank. Additives had no correlation with fatalities.
INDIVIDUAL SPECIES SUMMARY
ENTACMAEA QUADRICOLOR
Lived longest with MH lighting. Largest recorded was 24 inches in diameter. Only one fatality from powerhead. Seems to prefer it foot buried in rockwork, having only its oral disc showing. This species was the most common spawner. It was reported that it has the ability to recover after physical damage.
HETERACTIS MAGNIFICA (Ritteri)
Lived longest under MH lighting. Largest posted specimin was 22 inches in diameter. No fatalies recorded in this survey. Prefers to be at a high point in the tank, with its foot on top of rockwork. 1 spawning recorded.
HETERACTIS CRISPA
Only one recorded in the survey, that died following a tank move. Recorded at 14 inches in diameter. Had foot buried in sand and T8 lighting was provided.
HETERACTIS MALU
Varied lighting and filtration provided but none recorded as living for more than 1 year. Largest noted size in the survey was 14 inches. Seems to prefer lower tank level near on sand and near rockwork. No spawnings recorded.
MACRODACTYLA DOREENSIS
One recorded in survey under MH lighting. Measured at 10 inches and fed daily. Lives with foot in sand, and no spawnings recorded.
STICHODACTYLA SP (Carpets)
Longest lived with MH lighting. Largest recorded measured at 18 inches. Prefers sand/lower rockwork. No spawnings posted. Fatality noted caused by powerhead incident.

Quick story on about my anemone.
Started doing a bit of fragging earlier today and I was in the middle of it when I had to go out in a rush so i asked my wife to finish off, just stick a frag to a small rock with some milliput before it went hard and put it back in the tank. She moaned as she never does anything with the tank and has never in the nearly 3 years of keeping fish got her fingers wet. I said don't worry she could use the long plastic pincer things and she relented.
I came home to find my bubble tip anemone shrunken right back into its hole with mucus and stringy tissue coming out of it. She'd just aimlessly stuck the pincers in the tank and stabbed the nem through! :o The one time she does anything to the tank and she stabs the most sensitive thing in there!
Before the lights went out it had started to inflate itself again so i think it will be ok.

My feeling is that it never got enough food from the clown and i didnt feed it. I tried to feed it in the second week but it had started to move around. The last time i succesfully fed it a hermit robbed it of the bit of food.
Ultimately it disappeared to a spot on the back of a pice of rock and the clown hovered arond there for around ten days or so.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: both buried with their foot in the sand ( 2" ) in 2ft of water ( not bad for t5's , and they both have fantastic colouring still )
DOES IT PLAY HOST: both play host to the same individual female yellow banded maroon.
SPAWNING: no
I've never seemed to have problems keeping anemones but I find that most people struggle with them for the following reasons:
1 - picking a bad specimen from the outset, choosing a healthy anemone is crucial because many of them perish from poor transport/acclimatising/shop care( or lack of )
2 - water quality
3 - lack of feeding-for some reason people seem to think that light alone will nourish most anemones, wrong. In the sea anemones are constantly feeding on passing particles and leftovers from their clowns etc.
4 - over feeding-don't try to force a whole pack of lancefish in one go ( I have however seen a carpet 10" across try to eat a 7" naso!!!
5 - light-it's not just watts but also correct lighting of the right quality.
Basically it comes down to how much care you give to an individal specimen that you have carefully chosen, if you can't put in the time to care for any anemone you should not buy one. These creatures are offspring from parents that are centuries old!!
:thanx:

I don't dose anything, I only have the single skimmer. I have never once used any additives. I believe constant water changes is the key to success, not only for anemones but anything marine related really. I don't even use RO/DI water, good old regular tap water (though the tap water in my town is pristine, I borrowed one of those fancy meters from a friend and it barely registered anything.
ooh, i got rid of one of my nems, then the poxy thing split again, so i once again have 2 nems.
so now its 1yr 8 months, still looking lovely and going strong, but will be in the new tank in a few months, bigger. Oh yes.:D

Well after a year I decided to get an anemone, looked at a few and decided on this one. I was told to drip acclimatise it, but when I got home I could not find my tube, so I floated the bag and using a salifert syringe I squirted tank water in the bag. I left it for 5 mins while I made a cuppa and when I returned it was sitting on the tank floor (so much for my slow acclimatisation).
Anyway panic over I left it. It found a spot in the tank and opened up like a good'un.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t203/Umpa_EG/2fa73da1.jpg
After about a week or so it turned red and moved to the top of the tank.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t203/Umpa_EG/11b9b509.jpg
Everyone said to protect that PH and install more lights (I had two T5 white and Two T5 Blue) - so I bought a brand new Arcadia ballast and Two more 54w T5s and reflectors.
The anemone rewarded me by moving down from the top and hid in the rock - not to be seen for two months.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t203/Umpa_EG/e7844aec.jpg
My clown seemed to know where it was and still hosted it - but I did not see it.
When it finally made an appearance it was as white as a pound of lard, gob wide open - I thought it was a gonna.
I again tried to feed it but it was no go - even the clown looked worried, I was on daily alert ready to take it out and flush it if it died, having heard all kinds of stories about them wiping tanks out.
Anyway, if found its self a new spot after a xenia removal project went horribly wrong and I had to strip down my system and scrub the bloody stuff off my rocks (its growing back !!!), and to date is once again bright green, & clown feeding it bits of muscle I chuck in. The clown grabs it before other fish do and gives it the nem.
here’s a pic as it is today - 6 months from dropping it in (literally)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t203/Umpa_EG/IMG_0212.jpg
Now I know it does not look green in the photos, and I don’t know why but green is always filtered out some how by the camera. I have even bought another digital camera thinking the first one was faulty.
