This is my dream tank and I have being planning this for well over two years now,
Tank Specs are as follows
Main tank is seen through opening from the dining room, and can only be seen
from this room, the tank almost covers the full wall with maybe 2 ft each side left,
the tank itself will be 8 ft long by 4 ft high by 4 ft deep,
the sump is 4 ft by 4 ft by 3 ft deep,
and then another tank used for water changes will be 7 ft by 2 ft by 3 ft, this was my old tank, that shall be in the loop and can be closed of when needed to perform water changes.
total water volume around 1300 gallon inc refugium,
and wave tanks
lighting will be 6x 400watt m/h 2x20,000k and 4x 10,000k
and 4x t5 marine blue tubes,
below is a simple diagram gives you some idea of the layout,

does any body have any thoughts about this
the next step is to brick up three small walls to then put the base of the
tank on top
the base is going to be concrete, should i put metal into the concrete for
strenth or could the metal swell and crack the concrete? with sea water,
whats your thoughts
thanks dean

It wouldn't hurt, though I think I would be more tempted to go for a hardcore / rubble mix with some very course gravel in the cement, maybe steel grid in top layer? I would be very tempted to coat the whole lot with a marine 2 part epoxy paint to stop any saltwater ingress. looking good tho mate  -craig
Hi Dean. Things are looking good coming in leaps and bounds m8. I will have to get over to see it before long. One idea for strenghning the concrete would use stainless steel bars wired together with s/s wire to make a reinforced base for tank. Have you decided what your building tank of yet glass or acrylic. Regards Eric.

metal in concrete, sounds like ferrocrete (sp?) to me. plenty of boats are made out of this. its by far the best material for durability in the yaching industry. the only reason all boats aren't made of this is because it's too heavy and therefore efficiency and speed go flying out the window. a lot of training yachts are made of this as its so durable. i've seen cases were crete boats have twatted the quaysides during storms and the quays always come off worse. the metal content can cause 'blowing' of the concrete but your talking about extreme circumstances. the beautiful thing being if ever you need to carry out maintenance, you just hit it with hammer and slap some more gloop in. imo, plenty waterproof for an aquarium.

A great project!!!!!!!!!!!! It certainly takes a lot of time. And waiting for others i found was the biggest pain. Is it going to be Acrylic or Glass? Good luck.....be patient.......you wont make mistakes then
Thanks for your comments Gary i will keep that in mind, but i know what you mean!
this whole Glass or Acrylic thing, i am still unsure what to go with,
i would like acrylic but two problems
a price well over £4000
b cleaning the front of the tank because a magnet is out the window, <_<
what do you think?

Not so bad if you have no sand bed, most scratches are cuased by sand caught between tank and magnet cleaner. If you have a bare bottom there is less chance of this happening. just a thought.

In the last year acrylic has lowered in price a lot. Why i dont know unless it is becoming more readily available. Not knowing anything about acrylic as i have never owned one, but the sizes and shapes seem to be much more accessible.?
Just a few pics to see how its going!

U asked about using stell or nothing. You MUST reinforce the conctrete you can buy 8mm steel grid from most steel merchants. There should be not to much of a prob with steel swelling due to water ingress, But for peace of mind you could pay a bit more and get it galvanised, Someone meantioned S/Steel  Maybe a bit costly.
The difference between reinforced and not is increadable. PS you can also support a tank on just the ends without any probs. I once made a 6'6" tank 12mm base and tested it overnight in my garage. It was placed on 3 strips of timber and guess what. Crack in the middle. All were level.
Tank house looks good mate.

Hi Dean. Glad to see you've got the concrete in m8 its going to take a while to cure but hey it's going to be worth it. To all you people following this thread i was over at Deans last Sunday and that is going to be one big tank. I can't wait until it's up and running and full of fish etc. Regards Eric. PS. I'll let you know when the bus trips start
I don’t know you or where you live, but after reading this thread I’m looking forward to the bus trip.

Hi Philofbof. I live in York and have known Carco88 for a number of years he has always talked about this tank for years and now it's happening. The pics he's posted dont show the size of the hole in the wall thats going to be filled with a tank, it's HUGE. The next step for him is letting the concrete base cure so that it does'nt crack then it's buy a load of glass and silicone sealer and away you go one massive tank. It's unfortunatley not as easy as that because it's 4foot deep so 25mm glass will have to be used plus double skin bottom. Regards Eric.
Hi all
thats a good point eric!
does any body know where i can get 25mm glass?
thanks dean

Lookin great m8.
Dont meanto be a a wet weekend or anything
But you sayed 2 tonne sand and 10 bags cement !!!!! Tell me you put in 12mm stones as well eg : 3 bags sand 2 bags stones 1 bag cenent mix
If you ave not added aggrigate (stones) all you have is a very week sand /cement mix, which will not hold a tank that size..
I am sure you have ( but just would not like to see you waste all that time)

best mix for concrete is "20mm to dust" . comes in dumpy bags same as sand same price too. usually £30 a tonne. 1cement-5or6 parts mix.

nice one craig
its definately looking good, where is the water change tank going to reside. good idea tyling the wet room as well, sorts out the condensatuion issue.

Scoob, the water change tank will live under a bench at the back(with plumbed in sink), there is also a sump sat beneath ground level that's about 4'x4'x3', and a frag tank to go on top of the bench. Progress is slow as Dean is a busy family man who runs his own business, and gets maybe a couple of hours spare on a night if he's lucky. When it's finished I'm going to go and pitch a tent in his back garden with one end attached to the patio doors so i can pretend I have a huge tank like that! Wouldn't like the leccy bills though, multiple twin 400w halides, 2x3HP pumps, 1.3kw chiller etc. Yikes! The tank is going to be soooo big (the photos just don't give any impression of how big that space is) Dean reckons he's going to have to get his scuba gear on to put the rockwork in...Seriously.... :o
Thanks for the piccys Craig

hi all
at last i have found a broadband that knows what they are doing
thank god for that i have missed u/r

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Dscf00068.jpg
People have asked why i have not yet got the big tank in place,
well if i had bought the main tank it would get in the way and i have got
lots more to finish
it all looks too be taking shape now m8! keep up the good work  ,kris
jus read eeverything it sure is an amazing prodject  :D u shouldnt be reading this u shud be workin and takin pics and then posting the :P
Hi Dean. It's looking good m8 cant wait till i come over with Chris to have a look at how you are doing and see the progress you have made. Regards Eric.
Right then lets get in to this a bit more
the floor has now been tiled
and all the drains are finished, the tank on the floor is my mixing tank
and this will be part of the main system, running in a loop with the main tank
to carry out a water change which will be around 20% of the total volume
all i have to perform is turn two valves, one will isolate the tank the second valve
will empty the tank,
then top it up with 2 ro units [STILL TAKE 2 DAYS TO FILL] and add the salt
30kg a go, i have an internal pump to mix the salt and the slowly reopen valve 1
to add to main system
i have made this process as simple as i can because that would be a lot of water
to bucket around
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Dscf0092.jpg
this second photo is my brand new aqua medic chiller not a cheap thing at all
this unit retails out at around 2 grand, but i had to have one as the titan 4000 is the largist i could find and cools 4000ltrs of water,
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Dscf093.jpg
more soon
dean
that's more like it. awesome. lovely chiller thats, comes to something when you can't even get the car in ther too.
honestly i feel like a junkie desperate for my next fix, thank god you came through mr dealer
Hi Folks. Chris [Yakdriver] and I are going over to see Dean tommorrow to see the system in the flesh so to speak. We will be taking our cameras with us so we might put some more pics up if Dean does'nt mind i'm sure he won't.I cant wait to see how its changed from the last time i saw it it looks like hes done quite a lot since i was there last. Regards Eric.
good man eric, good man!!!!!
Ok folks, visited Dean this afternoon (great to meet you mate, thanks for cuppa and guided tour). I can confirm his new setup looks amazing. Dean is a perfectionist and it shows... I just wish I could do tiling as neat as you mate :D
He's comitted to getting this new tank setup and stocked this year and it looks like most of the hard/messy jobs are done.
Anyway here's a few piccies.

ive got a aquamedic titan 4000 as well (but mines white )is it going out side ,because there not quiet ,they work great just noisy thought id worn u they also pump out a lot of heat, but like u was the bigggest one i could get with out going 3 phase ;).
when i got mine aquamedic told my lfs they'd never sold one to a hobby'st before there for shop systems they thought i was mad :whistling: now at least there two of us. :D :
thanks andy
i wanted a white chiller but they tell me that they only come in blue now
bummer because white would match the room
as for putting out side, i have been told this before i will have to see how it goes,
and take it from there,
oh and by the way they wont think we are mad when these heatwaves are a coming,

Hi all here is an update and pics of my project,
this fan is realy cool  no pun intended they are wall mounted, and
can be programed to come on and off through the day,and remote controled

this is the filter box that sits in the sump
all the pipes will end up in here
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF00077.JPG
This cubbard will house 3x 50 gpd ro units one on 24/7 for water top up,
and two others for water changes,
And as a bonus a can on top of the unit stand a wave tank, this is good because the first plans showed the wave tank on brackets into the wall and i was always worred how heavy it would be <_<
killed two birds with one stone if you like!!

No, YOU don't want to know.
When we set up the five foot reef two years ago, we stopped counting when it went over 4k. We then decided the Ostrich approach was best, and have kept it that way ever since, which could explain why we now have four tanks....
WOW...would be an understatement.....i suggested the idea to my wife....i think the word "divorce" <_< entered the conversation somewhere. Think i will just stick with my 4ft for now.
Congratulations for your hard work so far. Keep it up.
Andy (Bernie)
I had i nice little job to do last week
drill the glass!!!!
i have been putting it of for a while now, but with my rock coming i must get
my finger out,
little tip as my piller drill does not have a big enough gape a had to do it free
hand gets worse dont it
however by dilling a piece of mdf the same size as my glass drill bit,
and covering the drill with masking tape[soaked in washing up ] for less
friction, and then finishing off free hand its made a very nice job of things,
92mm holes

Scoob i'm sure you will be welcome to come to see it in the flesh, as i suggested to Dean the other day about running trips to see it   Its going to be one mother of a system when its up and running, i'm glad i live near enough to visit regulary. :D Eric

awesome shots, looking great.
are they 2 overflows drilled in those shots in the bottom corner. are you building a weir up over them or are the returns? why did you go for there then?
I have never built a tank, but surely it makes sense to put the base in first and build the sides off of that?
Gonna be a stunning setup though
Cheers
Paul
You got it scooby
there will be a weir going in that corner, 2 x exits from there :D

Surely it depends on how the tanks going to be built, side panels on top of base or surrounding the base. If you get me?
Thats right
although the normal way of building a tank is to put the base in first,
then place the glass on top of that, but you must remember there is nearly
one metric ton of glass here,
the way i am adding the glass is the german way of building tanks,
called a floating base, it puts less stress on the base, i got the idea of david saxby
his is built the same,
Looking GOOD
What a project !!!!
Unbelievable.
I was looking at your base in one of the first pics of this post, it looks to be about 2 brick courses thick and the tank alone weighs getting on for a tonne.
I was worried about the base on my new set-up being 8" thick and being half the weight of yours!!!
Matt
Hi Dean that looks good m8 cant wait to see it wet. Come on Scoob get your case packed your off to Bridlington for the week, i will have to get my self over but i dont think it will be before xmas. Keep up the good work m8 talk to you soon. Regards Eric
Looks stunning. Are you not using any polystyrene under the tank?
Danny
Hi Danny
i will be putting polystyrene under the tank but it will only be 6mm thick,
to match up with the thickness of the frame <_<
i think it will be ok

hi new to the forum and this is one hell of a project.

Whilst this is looking like being one of the best setups I've ever seen, and will only serve as inspiration for the rest of us. The one thing I always get at home is you can't do that, it will effect the price of the house if you build something that big. Now with this tank if you were to ever sell your house, I would bet it would have a queue of people from here trying to buy the house just to get the tank, but what do you think it would do the the price of your house, or would you have to dismantle it before trying to sell.

I would like to know what peoples opinions are .
It is something that I have started thinking about also - whilst we are obviously hoping that a move or sell would not be needed , my inwall tank would probably go with and everything would have to be put back the way it was  :(
Not an easy task - and im sure it would put a great many buyers off????
Is there anybody who has gone through this sort of thing???
That's a good point, I would have thought it would devalue the property. If the buyer isn't interested in fishkeeping then it's both an eyesore and wasted space that's going to cost to convert back.
Fantastic tank so far though! Looking forward to it taking shape

Blocking up a cavity wall isnt going to cost an arm and a leg.
An average hole in the wall tank probably fills a space occupying 12 square feet, thats going to take Joe Bloggs half an hour on each side to fill and then finish the job off the following day by dry lining it; 2 sheets of plasterboard.

My only concern is how do I get the next house and make sure livestock will be ok.
Making good any stuff like that will be ok, you just tell the prospective purchasers that the whole in the wall will be made good.
Dean has not just got a hole in his wall he has built a fish room on the end of the house and knocked the hole into the room. But I think he will be there or a few years to come yet, plus it would make a great garden shed.
Of course it will put buyers off but that only has two likley results...either it takes longer to sell because you have to wait for someone thats not bothered about the work to put it right or...you sell for less.
Only choice is whether those results bother you enough. If the build is £20k and you loose another £5k to get a sale (5 years later) does it really matter?
Also depends on the house.....if its got 6 reception rooms and one has a tank its no big deal.....if its on an estate with 10 other 4 bed semis all up for sale at the same time its not exactly what the house doctor would order! :D

ps- looking great by the way!

What an inspiration, dedication, thought and planning.
Fair play to you, such an achievement. You are a perfectionist though, I hope you know that   if you don't your bank manager certainly does.
Methinks we'll be getting some yankees come looking at this soon.
If theres a queue where do you get tickets from please?
Matt
looking good carco88 i love my apf600 and after looking at your skimmers  im upset
brill pics :thanx:
:o
you managed to get the glass in.....when i saw someone welding the frame with 90 angle bars i wondered how you would get glass in...considering the weight and size....then when i saw the sides going in i thought something was wrong.....but it seems that u pulled it off....must say it cant have been easy (with me being an engineer i put myself in positions like this many times).....but sometimes there isnt a right way but the only way....so well done anyway
Looks like the worse is over.....mind.....how is all that that live rock doing ?
Cheers
