View Full Version : New Big Tank Project Now Started
Hi all
the new reef tank is now under way. I have ordered a 72Lx28Hx42W (front to back) acrylic tank, should have it in around 3 weeks so I've started the stand. It's not yet finished as theres a lot more braces to be added.
we have a 6x2x2 reef at the moment so will be doing a big change over soon, the main problem at the moment is the height of the skimmer (Deltec 703) The return is quite low and the whole thing needs to be lifted so it can run into a sump. At the moment the stand is about 37'' high but only allows a sump height of about 18 inches even with the top of the skimmer being right up under the bottom of the tank. As the skimmer is about 24inches in diamiter with the 3 x 1060 pumps sticking out. the sump's going to be a bit limited I think .
Here's a preview of the story so far the stand is bigger than it looks in the picture 71x42x37........
I had the same problem with my 703. I got round it by drilling the sump and fitting a tank connector so that the return is through the side of the sump rather than over the top. If you are interested, I will post a picture.

p.s. it looks like you will have an awesome system
Hi 916
how about having the sump drilled and having the outlet from the skimmer going threw it, as long as the water level isn't higher than the skimmer it should'nt be a problem
Reece
Must type quicker
nice one Paul

i could drill it myself as i have a diamond wet drill, but i wouldnt gain anything as its the water level in the sump that counts not the height of the sides, the hole would still limit the water level and less the skimmer was to return through a waterproof tank connector below the water level, but i could see that causeing problems, at the moment if i have the skimmer under the stand the biggest sump i can fit is 35x33x18H with a water level of about 16'' to allow for the overflow from the tank in a power cut etc. i would like to sea a pic thou may give me an idea
cheers

Looks like this is going to be a thread to watch. Good luck, I hope you have more fun and less problems than I did when I set my system up.
Cheers,
Cam.

Best of luck 916, i wish i could have one with extra width!!
been a busy boy as the new tanks coming next Saturday, nearly finished the stand, just got to add the top, fitted the sump 60x20x18 and tried skimmer for size no problems there, run all the electrics decided on two seperate ring mains 100amp hard wired direct to a new consumer unit in the garage one for the lighting and the other for all the other stuff, built an electric cupboard within the stand to keep sockets dry, havent decided were to mount the IKs yet.
Heres some more pics.
It's gonna be awesome.
Keep the pics coming....
Tim :D
LOOKING GOOD
out of intrest,is the tank on floorboards,or is it a concrete floor?
looks great but will servicing the sump be an issue?
Probably a bit late now but whats the size of your vertical supports, they look a bit on the thin side but it could just be the scale of the picture. That size tank is going to have a lot of heavy water in it.
But what a system it will be
floors are concrete, timber frame is 4x2 cls with all the weight being on endgrain, stand does look out of scale in the pics, but that said im gona put some more uprights in tomorow before we fill the tank (not that im paranoid)
I can get to all of the sump ok, but getting it out would be a laugh :D
