Have you gone for black sand? Looks black in the pic with the brittle star.

Nice

It's the aragamite figi black sand. Which is basically fine white sand mixed with what seems like black bit's of lava rock.

thats looking good mate! ;)

i have the same coral you have,is it glove or clove coral? i can't remember.....very easy to look after and grows/spreads nicely, loves the stronger flow in the tank :D

awsome choice of tank by the way

if you ever have time could you do a pic of your tank with just the moon leds on and where you've put them as i'd love to see this especially on this tank?

I'll try and do a pic tonight with the blue led's on. I basically bought a couple of sets of the blue lights available from maplin. I put them along the back of the tank inbetween the loose top bit and the small glass brace bar. I think they look pretty good at night when the halides go off. They give enough light for you to see nocturnal critters wizzing about, but not enough to disturb the fish.

Chris at cyberaquatics said the coral was a red pipe organ coral, so that's good enough for me :)

ahhh a red pipe organ coral? well... i have something very similar to that then!

only do a pic if you have time mate,no worries if you don't get round to it :P

The red pipe organ orgionally came from NothernMan, i got two frags off him... I've now got 20+ frags growing in the farm... It grows under pretty much any lighting...

A great first coral...

The tank looks fantastic andy, i actually used your tank today to show a few people who wanted a good first marine setup what could be done.. They loved your tank..

Spot the difference

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/spotthedif.jpg

After a bit of an algae problem everthings clearing up now, just hope the leathers in the above pic cheer up after the hot spell, both of them have gone in the huff!

My bubble coral never really grows, it's about 2/3 of the way down slightly under the large leather. This spot seems be it's prefered spot, puffs up themost there anyway. I've tried feeding it, cyclopeeze, and some of the meaty bits out of marine dreams, but it does not seem to show any feading responce to either. Any ideas?

abyss have you left your bio balls and sponge in???????????

Seems to be two camps one that leaves in and the other that says remove as they cause the live rock to work harder and harbour nitrate????????

Here's some more updated pic, i lost most of the LPS corals when i went away one xmas and had a problem with a temp drop, the fish and softies were fine though.

I managed to eradicate my hair algae problem and i've recently started thinking about corals again, and starting to build up my softies with some rics and zoo's. Hopefully won't be too long :)

He's still there, just camera shy. He's probably too large for the tank but i don't have the heart to move him on :(

At the request of Mikey here's some pics of my autotopup.

I've got a custom tank in the bottom cupboard which feeds a peri pump. (http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=32_46&products_id=550)

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/Tank.jpg

The Peri Pump is then plugged into a D&D Autotopup (RUW230MO (http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=32_125&products_id=411))

The switch is placed in the return sump at the back and fits nicely on the glass of the dry chamber. The peri pump tubing is then fed up the dry chamber and drips into the same chamber that the switch is in.

I've got the switch set as low as it will go with is about half way down the chamber. Giving ample coverage of the return pump, and even allows me to add some extra live rock into this chamber.

Looking good mate. Those ric's look very happy to say the least. Are the prodibio and KZ additives helping at all, can you see any visible improvements?

Cheers

If you look at these before and after pics...

Before (around Feb)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/Full.jpg

After
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/FullNew.jpg

The green algae sitting over the corraline algae on the back wall has definitely started to disappear. Although these weren't taken with the same camera and different bulbs (Now MarineLux 14k) generally the tank looks much cleaner, the skimmer pulls more out, and corals look more extended. For example ever since the leather went in (3 years ago?) the fluffy ends to the polyps just disappeared, these are starting to come back now.

Before
http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/../uploader/2008Q1/ShortPolyp.jpg

After

http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/../uploader/2008Q1/LongerPolyps.jpg
As you say the rics are way bigger, but this could be as those original pics were taken only a couple of days after i added them.

Currently i'm using..

Prodibio Biodigest (every 15 days)
Prodibio Bioptim (every 15 days)
Sponge Power (3 drops per day)
Zeofood7 (1 drop per day)
Zeostart2 (0.5ml per day)
Korralin Amino Life (1ml per day)

I've got a bag of KZ activated charcoal in the bioballs sump, as well as a bag of KZ Zeolites in there too. For the zeolite stones i'm running about 1/4 of the recommended amount at the moment as i've only had them in about a week. These bags are squeezed each day.

I'm certainly happy with the results so far, nitrates have dropped since feb from 25+ to <10 on my test kit.

Well another week or so on my mixture of prodibio and zeovit adds, and more polyp extension from the leather.
