Two small ones each have two outputs at front of tank
Two big ones will flow across reef at each other.

Hi Simon....
Incredible amount of water power and movement, have they all got controllable outputs of water or fixed flows???
Interesting to see you using a one for the skimmer... I see you have two will they be in line or T offs or one being completely differently fed???
I like how you say little Deltec are they all Deltec models???
I too use a Deltec HLP 5250 to feed my skimmer with its flow control set lower... and I’m really pleased how it has been doing its job. Great little pumps...seams to be very reliable, even though they a bit pricey
Is this system been solely designed by your self???

There are three pickups jointed together, two large one will be tee together same with smaller ones
They are sequence pumps

Dude, that's a disturbingly large tank you have there.
I've always wondered:
Silicone is quite runny when it isn't set. Is it possible when sticking one of the vertical pieces of glass onto the base of the tank, that the weight of the glass squeezes the silicone out of the join? Or do you use spacers or something? (But I guess that would leave a hole).
G
OK. I've had a closer look at your pictures. I guess that's why there's the double base where the upper piece of glass is slightly smaller than the lower piece of glass. I think.

Hi Gubs
Yes it does squeeze out a lot of the silicone but you want a join with no bubbles. The weight of glass help with that quite a bit.

Hi Simon
I understand your tank is situated in a conservatory and looks great by the way :D (dont worry no lighting or heating/cooling questions) but I have a conservatory which would accomodate a tank of those proportions which means I could move the tank out of the living room.
My question is though, what were the foundations like of your conservatory (if you had it built yourself  ) I know mine was not done to full building regs (not reqd as only considered as a temp structure) and has a slab of concrete about 4" deep as its base (about 18" for walls)
Obviously you have no concerns about the weight but had you considered it?

19-10-04, 09:42
Hi Ian
I have checked my depth of concrete which is 6" + 10"+ of hard core the conservatory is 18" higher than garden level. In theory the old tank was 1/2 that size and on smaller footprint so I should no problems as new tank is spread over a greater area, but you have got me worried now
Simon.....
We have run 30+ ton corn transport Lorries on 4-6" concrete with a hard core base on the farm...with no effect for years. This mostly spread along the back tyres of no more than 6ft spread... working on that theory I think your are more than covered…..

Would you change to not have as many taps on your system?
Were they not really needed to isolate a part of the system?
I should imagine when you got that many pump out side the tank and some for closed loops...I should imagine it’s the only way you can isolate the pumps for servicing....Could there be an easier way. You could use a threaded end on the low outlet pipes in the tank and screw Blanc stop end every time you need to service the pumps...need to get your hand in for that. Taps are better option I think

I would swap all the critical ones over now. ie. the ones that you cannot remove the entire tap without draining down.
Half a dozen of mine (VDLs) are leaking or have leaked. Where they go is the internal O-ring, on the half that sits against the ball, and no matter how much you tighten the the outter nut you cannot put enough pressure to squeeze the internal seal tight.
I hate them. I've got two critical ones for the close loop pumps and they're the worst mistake on my system (didn't know how crap they were then).
SPS Hoover
21-10-04, 09:04
Tuan
Are you using taps to reduce flow?
What size taps are we talking about?
Regards
Some of the taps are supposed to be for re-directing flow between the outlets for the close loops for fine tuning. Some are isolating taps to enable removal of pumps etc...
Most of them are now wide open anyway as the pumps are powerful enough to provide a decent flow to all the outlets.
I've had leaks with the 32mm, the 40mm, 50mm and one of the 63mm ones. I've noticed you have drilled the bottom of the tank and so these pipes would have isolating taps on ? Make sure that these taps are absolute top quality because when they go wrong you can't replace them!
With hindsight I wished I went up and over instead of through the side & bottom of the tank to feed my close loop pumps. The frictional losses of the extra pipeworks and hassle of priming the pumps is way way less important than holding the entire tank's volume by some pieces of plastic and rubber O-rings!
Oh another thing. These larger taps are a real PIA to tighten as you can't really get a good grip on them. The nasty plastic moldings also leave some sharp edges/spikes which have torn nice gashes on my hands quite a few times, just the thing you need with a lot of salt water around!
Wished I'd spent the money on more streams actually. So much easier to work with and stress free!
Edit: Forgot to ask.. aren't you tempted to try the eductors?
I agree with Tuan about the taps Si, mine are as tight as a********. I've got some blue handled ones dotted here and there on my system and they seem much much easier to turn, though I'm not sure if it's just coincidence or wether the orange and blue taps are different (anyone know?)
Tuan, what colour are your taps?
SPS Hoover
21-10-04, 16:27
I believe Tuan's are blue ones.
Spoke to someone who sells quite a few of these and they were unaware of them leaking
Lets have a poll  on VDL taps
Sorry - both orange handle and blue handled ones leaked. When it first happened I rang 'someone' and he knew immediately what the leak was, and it turned out it happened quite alot! Wished I had known that before the system was peppered with them!
I find that if you don't actually use them very often, then try to turn them, that's when the damage is done. I think it's down to the deposit on the ball inside pushing against the plastic ring and kind of warp it somehow. And this kind of 'usage' is exactly how you use them to isolate pumps/skimmers for maintenance - ie. only once or twice a year!
Sigh...
Yes, sort out the taps now!
The Effast (blue) ones have a slip seal on one side. Over time the rubber ring inside starts to let water leak out. If you try to tighten them up it usually upsets the seal even more and they leak worse. One solution I found was to pull the fitting to bits, then rebuilt it but glue the insert inplace with solvent weld. At least then it can't leak from that inner seal.
Also, just a note that the Georg-Fischer ball valves have a different thread to some of the others. So, to replace the fittings with +GF+ may mean cutting the pipes and re-gluing new tails on.
[QUOTE]
Wished I had known that before the system was peppered with them!
Damn, me too! I wish people would mention that there are other options before they recommend them to you. Mine will be a nightmare when that time comes.
Simon, looks like you are just in time with this heads up!
Paranoia setting in I think....A idea i have....
I just like to add we use red, grey, blue all makes and it makes no difference I’m afraid…
IMO If left for months without turning it on or off… the build up of deposits within the tap… build behind the seal…Then when the tap does finally get used, it grind and damages it…IMO pressure does not come into the problem…Quick turn on off a few times once a fortnight and they should last for years...I based this on the wear and tear…deposit build up on hundred we use in the plant nursery…also with the added factors from heat from the sun and freezing condition in the winters does make them far more prone to damage than inside.
There is no real alternative except I think a closed electronic valve...Used in horticulture nursery layout for irrigation...Expensive and need the water management computer to control them. One other is to fit a threaded stop end to any pipes enclosed loops or sump were the water would just keep flowing threw… just to cover in advent of the tap leaking…this would allow you to replace the tap with new without the need of completely draining the system. Just screw them in place if and when needed…
Mark...
Mark, agreed.
However, turning all the taps on and off every few weeks was never mentioned anywhere that I've seen before the system was set up. And it's just the kind of thing you do on a reef tank if the tap is for isolation purposes only.
If I knew this when we started there would probably be only a couple of taps on the whole system!
simon garratt
22-10-04, 13:35
Could never understand why a cirtain mr 'S' had to drain his system to change the valves he had.....
If the open ends off the loop are in the tank, just fit a bung/cap in the end while your working/draining the loop.
The pressure of water above will quite happily keep it on. You can also weld a drain nipple at the bottom end of the pipe as well for ease of draining.
No biggy as far as i can see.
Regards
Si.
Tuan...
No! I’m not surprised you new nothing about this turns on/off business...really it's not herd of. I relate it to any tap really brass of what ever...you try turning the bloody thing after a few years...usually partly or totally sized up from lime scale. You are right on having less of them as possible; if you could do away with some then I would have thought they shouldn’t be there in the first place. All we can say is it's a mater of haven them with the Closed loop system with no other options, like Simon's with the external pumps, it’s really the easiest or only way of isolating them. Another option is to have two taps side by side; to allow one to be changed wile the other isolates it...NOW THAT WOULD BE CRAZY…Both go at once.
Si G has the other idea but a simpler method to what i thought. I thought with the threaded stop end method in the tank...But his is far easer with rubber bungs...much simpler.
I suppose It's only come about from you saying that's got every one thinking...Speaking to Marc at Watford yesterday gave me the impression that Danny has not come across this leaking tap business to much before... I certainly not herd of it before you said nothing from the maker or suppliers…and like I said we got 100 of different types and sizes working and never leaked due to wear and tear...Pain in the back side just a mater of turning them on & off from now on to prevent this happening.
I think what we find on the Nursery... that these taps are only put on lines were they are going to be turned on most every day in the summer and 2-3 times a week winter time, so it would never occur...the only damage we ever get was frost splitting them...this was only because of the system not being drained before nightfall being forgot really... other than that some of them are still original 19years on...

Well impressed Simon- not been paying cloase attention recently- you know how it is! And I thought your last tank was huge- good luck mate! I can feel a 3G visit to Fareham coming on in a few months!
And yes my VDL 's leak too - in particular my main outflow 40mm is a ****- and like some say, the more you try to make them dry the worse they seemto get. In the end I stuck a drip plat underneath mine- (it was more a seep of water than a flow and the salt deposits have clogged up the leak- but might need to think about replacing this valve at some point. My smaller ones have been OK though.

What part of the valves is the leak comming from exactly??
ps to tighten some of the bigger valves use a boa type wrench (has a rubber strap on a handle).

Simon if its the same stuff I have bought, it looks great but beware :o I dont think it would be suitable for reef tanks
see here (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=30180&st=0&#entry242840)
Looks great by the way Simon I take it the snowcrete rocks are the larger flat wite pieces rather than the more shapely pieces. (thats not a dig at your sculpting techniques by the way :D )

Yes thats right home made stuff is large flat pieces. The shapely stuff is dryed out tonga rock. It had zoo's growing on it so when we stripped tank tank we put it to one side to dry out and jet washed the zoo's off. Now that its dry its a bit easier glue into the rock structure.

Why would Fiberglass rock (not that Simon is using it) be unsuitable for reefs. Its been used in large public displays for donky's years without adverse affect. And what do you base your conclusions on that its not reef safe?

Si. :)
Simon,
Quick idea, leave your daughter in the tank and fill the conservatory instead…….
Must be about the size of your next tank!!!!
Also is this the reason Portsmouth Water have been doing all that work on top of Portsdown Hill fir the last 10 years…….
Looks better every time we see it………….. More Pics….

Si
I am not saying fibreglass rock is not reef safe, just a new artificial live rock that has come on to the market which is shaped and looks just like live rock. It is hollow and has a few small darinage holes that allow it to fill with water which would not circulate and become stagnant. Also as it is not porous, it would not become "live"
Ian
SPS Hoover
27-10-04, 15:06
I admitt Ian I am of same opinion as you about stagnant water contained in rock not sure how much harm it will do i would suspect that critters will populate it and their movement will help with water movement within but by how much not sure

Could you not run some pipework into the rock a la Simon Garret. You may need to perforate the fibre glass a little!
Should keep the water fresh?

Hi,
I called round to Simon's the other day to drop off some bits and to see the new system for the first time. I have to say that the aquascaping is really impressive, with plenty of space for sexy new corals. The pictures do not do it justice. Once the corals have settled down, grown in a bit and coloured up to their former glory it is going to be one mage impressive system!
