er no one else have one of these small tanks ?
Hey Simon, don't rush :), you only posted last night heheh. I just discovered the thread. Would lvoe to see this grow into a nice thread dedicaed to our cute little sytems :).
=======
Wow it sounds like you are using a lot of advanced equipment for a small tank. I believe in over design and fail safe systems too. But currently have to wait some time before getting mroe equipment.
A few questions:
1. From the shops/ people I talked to, all seem to agree on the Tunze Stream 6000 (let along 12000!) is too powerful for a 30 gallon cube like the Chromis, and will likely cause a whirlpool in the tank.
But you have installed it! So, how does it operate? Does it create excessive strong current? or a more gentle mellow flow that's high in turn over?
Did you take out the PH1000 supplied with the tank? And do you control your Stream with a Tunze controller?
My aim is for my Chromis tank to gradually move from Softies to mized SPS and LPS. extra flow will benefit greatly but I was going to purchase another PH1000. If you recommend the Stream then i will rethink my options.
2. How did you make your own Osmorator (auto top off), i was going to invest in a Tunze but it cost £120, if i can make one myself I'd like to give it a try!
3. How do you arrange your electronics (plugs, lighting controllers etc) to avoid possible water splash?
Thanks very much in advance!
I knew I'd pick up lots of good ideas and tips from other pople's Chromis setup. It seems this charming little setup can be adapted to a wide range of setups, it's good to learn from each other.
Finally, congraturations on a beautiful tank setup! Lovely example. Could you list your water parameters and inhabitants?
I will try to write about my own setup and post pics tonight after work. Ta
hehe sorry m8, impatient is my middle name. :D
In answer to your questions.
Most of the kit is left over from a larger tank so is mostly over kill on this small system.
1, Tunze stream. Yes I would say if possitioned correctly it would be too powerfull but in the position I have it, it kills the power. Its at the bottom of the tank in the middle inside a rock. So in effect I am wasting a lot of its power. A smaller stream would still be ok though imho.
Yes I still kept the PF1000 as well, and added another 1200lph maxijet on the IKS. Cant have too much flow ! I have no sand bed so that really helps.
2, Autotop up. Well in this case I made the Adapter that goes into the IKS. In the past I have made a system that I described here. http://www.reefpark.19a.net/forums/index.p...=ST&f=12&t=4741 (http://www.reefpark.19a.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=4741)
It worked very well for over a year
3, Water splash ! there are two 4 way adapters round the back that have got a little wet for time to time ! only safe way is an RDC on the feed to your tank.
1 cleaner shrimp
1 cleaner wrasse
1 Bicolour angel
2 green chromis
2 Perc clowns
2 Euphylias
1 Hammer coral
1 Turbinara
1 Blue / green cool Montipora with a crab living in it
1 large red plating montipora
1 small orange plating montipora
1 small clam
1 montipora digitata
various softies all over rocks, mushrooms, xenia, polpys.
Numerous turbo snails, red and blue leg crabs
Thanks for your comments m8.
Cant wait to see how other chromis have shaped up.
cheers.
hi guys, mine is only just started, ive got the chromis because its not a massive tank that need loads of room and isnt too small to keep marines. the pic only shows my tank with the water and sand in, just saving for the rock. was thinking around the 22kg mark.
Is this enough?
its all standard spec, but want to fit a blue antic tube to it.
im looking to keep clowns first as these our my favourites.
your tanks are looking good and it spurrs me on, as mine could look like it (soon)!

good luck with it mark. Rock sounds a very good amount.
Like the what you have on your walls btw.
good luck.
Hi all, my Chromis was set up as a replacement for 2 other tanks that I do not have the time to look after and have to close down.
I decided the fish I'd like to stay and move over to the Chromis (have to wave goodbye to a beautiful male mandarin among others, it was hard), but decided to start all corals a new ( bit of a challenge ).
The tank was purcahsed on the 4th of September, and i waited for a couple of weeks until all the equipment arrived. The water filling was done on 13th of September.
Live rocks arrived and started the cycling on 16th/ Sept, the tank finished cycling in merely 3 days.
Inverts and cleaners went in the week after and finally the fish was moved into the tank on 2nd/October.
So the tank has been runnign for about 7 weeks so far. Currently the water is prestine, however I am fighting a war against white spot.
The tank euipment is as folows:

My plan is to turn this into a LPS + SPS mixed tank once it's matured, however the ich problem is causing me major headaches. I'm also going away for 2 x 2 weeks for work, galdy I have freind who is now trained up by me to look after the tank :) but I don't expect he would do anything else apart from topping up and feeding.
Here's a few pictures, and if you are interested in the progress of the tank set up, you can read it here:

Newer pics coming soon hopefully (the last bacth of pics I processed was from begnning of October! The tank has changed somewhat since then)
Hey your tanks are looking cool guys :)
Cheers for the info simon, I will try give a go to make an auto top off, then need to add a Ca reactor LOL. More spendings....
Kat, nice detailed info there, looks fantastic.
Thanks Simon,
hope it'll become a nice resident for many SPS and LPS like yours! :)
Touch wood the ich will go away (my flame is the one that refuce to respond to anything otehr than copper treatment).

Here's a picture of our in shop chromis tank. Been running for 9 weeks now.
http://www.cyberaquatics.com/ur/100_0287.JPG
Everything totally standard with only the heater added.
Fish
Yellow Tang
Pair of clowns
3 chromis
1 yeallow tail chromis (came in as a freebie)
Corals are mostly frags from my coral farm that we sell in shop.
Chris
looks good Chris. Whats on the sand on the left ?
cheers.
Nice looking reef construction! I love the hole openning :)
Is 7 fish a little too much for a Chromis? I'm thinking about adding one more to make up to 6 fish in my tank.
call the tang police! <_<
there looking nice. do you reckon this topic could be a sticky topic?

Thats funny it was pinned for a while, isnt now not sure why.
Hi every1 will post my tank pics etc soon ive added lots since my last pics maybe too much ill let you decide.
Katsure i dont think 7 fIsh is too much my stock list is 2 purple firefish,2 clowns, midas blenny,bi colour angel, pyjama wrass, carribean tang and a mandarin fish so 9 but im not adding to that at all but i no some1 who has 16 fish in there chromis! altho lot of green chromis and all doing well.
great thread guys
Mark
hi everyone, ive got sum of my rock in the tank now! abt 7.5KG of rock. will post a pic when i can use my dads new digi cam! :D
p.s just been reading abt the skimmer motor/pipework trouble and floods! katsura have you done anything abt the pipe?
im gona have to sort this out asap.
cheers
matt
heres a pic ive just taken:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/mattyi26/DSC00075.jpg
Hi Matt, hope you tank will get on with a great start!
What did you mean by the pipework problem?
The skimmer motor vibration was caused by an offset pin needle wheel (that's used to create air bubbles). I looked at other pin wheel and they are all like this, maybe it was a design feature or bad plastic mold?
After a few adjustments, the vibration becomes tolerable and I've now got used to the noise LOL. The fish seem to not bothered by the small amount of vibration. It could have been better, but it will do for now.
Hi guys
I think the pipework problem Matt's referring to is my electrocution/flooding story on the main reef forum.
You need to be careful the pump doesn't detach from the skimmer. If it does, you'll discover the flaw in having a 90 degree bend pipe and a powerful pump pointing over the back of your tank!
I've now removed mine, and will either silicon the tube or else make some sort of cradle to secure the device to stop it coming apart.
Don't wait to be flooded/electrocuted before you take action! :P
Owain
(p.s. will post my chromis soon!)
Wow, good point Owain. Rally gald you came though okay tho!
I did do a double take when assembling the unit. The 2 pipes feels fairly tight, silicon seal would be good idea tho.
How did yours came apart? Do they shake themselves loose after a while?

VERY VERY VERY GOOD POINT.
My pipe detached couple of weeks back 1/3 tank on the study floor...eeek. I have glued the lower part of the pipe (nearest the pump) in place, the upper part that goes into skimmer is still just pushed in position. Best solution is as you say above, flexy pipe held on with some tyewraps.
cheers.
they beat me to it! i still havent tackled the problem yet, gona have to soon as i dont want a wet floor!
Be nice to see a few more pics up here :D
I'm off backpacking for a while, so I will turn off my skimmer for now. Will post pics when I'm back :
Hi All.
Just taken delivery of my Chromis and I have a couple of questions to ask. I know some people put polystyrene underneath their tanks to level them out, have any of you guys done this? The next question is wall brackets for the light. I know Arcadia do some but haven’t seen any for the AquaMedic lights. Simon, is it possible for you to let me know where you purchased your brackets from and a price please?
Going to go and give the tank a good clean now as its covered in dust and wood chippings for some reason.
Got a few more questions to ask when I can think of them so I'll post them later with the set up and what I’m hoping to have in the tank!
Thanks
Richard
Good luck with the tank, in answer to your questions,
I know some people put polystyrene underneath their tanks to level them out, have any of you guys done this?
I asked the Aquamedic Rep about this as I was worried non came with the setup. He said its designed this way. Dont know if this is BS but, he said there is a thin layer of silicone around the bottom of the tank that acts like poly. Anyway, I have non in and all is ok so far,
I know Arcadia do some but haven’t seen any for the AquaMedic lights. Simon, is it possible for you to let me know where you purchased your brackets from and a price please?
The ones I have are Guiesman from www.paraquatics.co.uk BUT, took over 2 months to be delivered. I have designed some brackets that I hope to start selling soon (my company bashes metal so its a sideline !) I paid 45 quid for the Guiesman brackets, just getting costsing in on the ones I want to sell. will let you know if your intrested.
If we can be of any assistance dont wait to ask, BTW pay attention to the remarks above about the pipe from pump to skimmer.
cheers, good luck.
hi all ive just finished getting my 2nd lot of liverock in. got abt 18KG now in the tank. heres a quick pic of how things are at the mo: :D :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/mattyi26/DSC00077.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/mattyi26/DSC00078.jpg
The skimmer was quite and now is gone mad!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/mattyi26/DSC00079.jpg
Thanks for the reply Simon. I have made inquiries regarding the Guiesman wall brackets so I’ll let you know how I get on. I saw your original post regarding the skimmer on Reef Park so I will look into that as I don’t think my parents will be best pleased if the tank empties on their carpet.
In regard to the set up of the tank I was planning on getting a external filter to house some carbon and rowaphos, a couple of heaters (any ideas on the wattage?) one for the tank and one for water changes, couple of Maxijet powerheads for circulation, crushed Aragonite for the sand bed, 20kg of cured fuji liverock, RO unit and will be using Reef Crystals.
Obviously I need to get my test kits etc… and also a digital thermometer. Is there anything else that I am missing or might be worth having?
As far as stocking the tank I am thinking of soft corals ie mushrooms, leathers nothing too adventurous at the moment.
For fish I was thinking 2 common clowns, royal gramma, bi-colour blennie (or similar) and lastly a flame angel. Do you think these would be ok?
Oh and lots of snails and hermit crabs.
Will be filling up the tank later with tap water to leave overnight to check for leaks. One thing I did notice was the left side of the tank didn’t line up flush with the front pane of glass. The left pane of glass was sticking out by a couple of mm’s. Is this something to worry about?
Thanks
Richard
remember that the light also gives off alot of heat, my heater never comes on at day but does when the light is off. ive only got a single 300w heater
Thanks Matt. How high is your light from the tank? Do you ever get any problems with over heating due to the light?
hi there
my light is 8 inches from the top of water line and dont have any problems with overheating,if you do you can always get a fan (simon has 1 i think on his)from homebase to clip on if you get a problem.
your plans for stocking are fine altho you have plenty time to keep looking and thinking about what you want.flames are lovely but not cheap around 55quid you can also look at other dwarf angels-there are plent to choose from, lemon peel,bi-colour,coral beauty just keep looking
good luck with it all
Mark
yeh my fan is on quite a lot, its tough maintaining temp on a 30gallon tank. As soon as central heating comes on (in rest of house) then the fan comes on. Its set on my IKS to come on at 27.1 and yup its a clip on fan for a fiver from B&Q...cheapest best buy ive ever made for the tank and b4 next summer I recommend you get one :D
Richard sounds like you have a better plan than when I started my first tank, spot on. Ive also been thinking about an external filter to run rowa and carbon...never had one though how do they work ?
cheers.
mines abt 10 inches from the tank. ive got a little fan to keep things cool. the first day i had my light on the temp went from 25c to 30c! ul need it for when the summer comes.
stock sounds cool.
im tempted by the small coolers for next summer, only 200 notes for a small chiller.
The external Ehiem filters come with sponges inside, similar to what comes with the Juwel aquariums so you can just take the sponges out and put what you like it. The ones suitable for 30 gallons are about £75ish.
Having looked on the Aqua medic site the Chromis is meant to come with the Ocean light but the one that came with mine was a Aquastarlight Future which is a bit more expensive than the Ocean light so I'm not sure what happened there?!
I was always under the impression that chillers were more expensive than that? Do you know what the average life span of a chiller is?

nice one :-) lucky there m8, does the Aquastarlight have actinics ?

No idea on life but its got to be 5+ years...Im guessing the same as a fridge ? Chillers are low cost if they are small, there is a massive price jump to 500quid for the next size up. look here,

If you want to add a Tunze stream for free to your chromis tank look here,

simonm hows the tank going? just wondered if you got any new pics?
Advance notice.
This thread will be UNPINNED at the end of the week.
Obviously it wont be deleted , it just wont have its pinned status anymore.
Please remember if we did this for every style of tank then the pinned status would hold no relevance.
Craig
Unfortunately it doesnt have any actinics so will be attempting to add a actinic when the tank is set up. The spec of the light is 1x150W,13000K so I'm not sure what the difference is compared to the Ocean light.
What is everyones turnover for their tanks as some say the minimum is 10x. Still got to order some powerheads but didnt really want more than 2 in the tank and I'm not sure if 2 can create enough flow.
Ideally I would have liked the Tunze stream 6060 but feel its way way over the top.
Matt, what substrate are you using as it looks very white and nice from the pics?
Definately think the small chiller is a good option come the summer.

Thanks for pinning it for a while Craig,
The Chromis tank is often the first way into reefkeeping for a lot of folk so this thread should really help people starting out in the hobby.
thanks again.
its not anyomore!! theres tons of green algee on the glass and sand. its made up of very very tiny bits of coral crushed up. its not as fine as play sand but looks nice.
i thought that having the topic pinned would mean that its easy for everyone to find.
Matt, yes you are correct, and we did pin it, peeps know about it now so the need to pin is no longer there.
also as long as you keep posting to it, it will stay at the top of the list, thereby encouraging chromis owners to keep the thread active.
Craig.
ok. cheers. just didnt want to lose the topic, as its helpful to all involved.

no new Pics, bit of a good / bad week for the tank really,
I added some new stuff, Starfish, Pygama wrasse etc but this week my clam thats been unwell since the tank moved has died and last night somehow my starfish wrapped itself round my tunze stream...AND finally, I think my tank is leeking !
There is a drip constantly from the top of the tank at back right. I think im running the water height too high with autotop up BUT it should not leek from the coner.
bit of a bad week really...bit gutted.
Silly question but as they come with the manufacturers guarantee, if the tank was leaking and it was fully stocked how would they go about replacing it? Would they send you a new one first and then transfer the stock over?
Hi all
Just want to post and say sorry for not posting up to date pictures of my tank i will try and take some and get them posted next week as bought perc 90 and going to be transfering stock over when it arrives.
whats happened to all other chromis owners tho?i did post a pic on other forum before simon started this1 but thought would see loads of pictures as lots of people must have these tanks.
Ive gotta get the camera out soon, sorry again guys
Mark

Mark. Ive no idea where they all went but im sure there were some more !!
Good questions about warrenty, there can never be any...All im going to do now is drain some water and silicone up the hole.....no other option really.
im going to add my clean up crew 2moro, so il take a few pics after.

Hi there
Tank looks great the colours are stunning how many fish have you in there???
cheers Jamie
hi simon
yes thats with standard light, ive got 20kg of rock in there and imo wouldnt put anymore in the chromis as by the time you sit corals on rock etc it looks full.
jamie i have 9 fish in there it was feeding time thats why they all seem to be out.
2 puple firefish
2 clowns
midas blenny
bi colour angel
pyjama wrass
mandarin
caribbean tang
cheers

Hey Mark
Great tank  .
I am just waiting for my chromis(in sliver) should be here on Thursday, are you using the standard light? have you an actinic fitted?
I am getting my fingers wet again after a 10 year break from the hobby, any suggestions for a clean up crew, how much live rock, type of corals etc.. for a relatively newbie.
Cheers
Victor
Hi Victor
yes thats the standard light and actinic is fitted to strip/slider bit on top of tank.
I have 20kg or 1 box of live rock in there,I feel that is enough for the size of tank by time the corals go in but it could take more or less than 20kg and still look a great tank.id get 20kgs then see what you think.
clean up crew-not sure if this is correct but think i saw somewhere 1 snail or crab per gal so id add over time 35 to your tank.ive got around 15 turbo snails maybe bit more.12 red leg hermit crabs, cleaner and fire shrimps.
ive got a mixture of corals what i done was went to LFS and said oh i like that but can i keep it,(bit silly i no but hey a good lfs if you tell them about set up etc will say yes no prob or no not suitable, the sign of a very good shop imo is NOT selling you something when they no your not gonna keep it long etc)-what requirements does it need/flow/feeding/does it sting other corals/lighting etc etc is it ok with new set up?most important imo is water stability, once you can keep it stable the chromis could keep most corals no prob at all.as you have kept them before you should be fine after few water changes and you get your calcium levels up.
should look really nice in the silver.
good luck with it.
Mark
hi guys, i was gona get mine in beech, but got the silver, its cool. B) victor what fish are you gona keep?
matt

Mark,
When I was in the hobby before I kept fish only. a solitary lion in one tank, and a pair of clowns in another mind you I did have a neme in there with them. How do you keep your calcium level up? I was hoping that by using a good salt with a high'ish calcium content, something like living ocean, and a fortnightly 10-20% water change should be adequate, what do you think? Do i need to supplement this?

Not sure at present, my local LFS has a cracking pair of true black clowns might be tempted, if their still there once I'm ready. What are you thinking of keeping? I do know that I'm going to try to limit the fish to 2 or 3 max.
Victor
Hi Vic
yes once you have a couple of corals i would start getting calcium levels up by adding a good calcium suppliment, your levels wont be high enough without it.mine was running at 330 i think before i started adding calcium.
when adding anything to your tank the best bit of advice imo is get a plastic bowl that holds saw litre of water and put a small hole in the bottom, when you add say ro to top up your tank sit the bowl on the shelf bit where most people fit the actinic then fill that bowl with water/whatever your putting in and it drips in gradualy to your tank, you can add your calcium into this bowl with the water etc and also wont affect temp etc of tank.also easy to see how much evaporation a day your losing

I have one in my Chromis,
make sure its eating when you purchase it, I have heard of some that die a couple of weeks after moving in. Also, it MAY nip at your corals, luckily I have one that is a flake addict so it avoids my corals.
good luck.

Dont listen to Simon his Bi-colour angel aint a flake addict... Its a greedy fat hobbit that eats anything you put near it - rubber, cars, small children etc.

Hi Kev
yeah the bi colour is a nice fish,im not sure imo that they are a good angel for the chromis(altho i no you have perc)maybe can get bit bigger than some of the other dwarf angels out there.
when i set up perc 90 i was going to add 2 dwarf angels both at same time fancy a flame as 1 and between a few as to other 1 but at the time 50 odd quid seemed expensive to 20 for the bicolour,ANYWAY,my brother is (in army and)based in thirsk hes up nearly every week if you fancy the angel you can have it mate as want to add the angels last to new set up and i dont want to add flame straight away etc etc would like it to go to good home if you dont fancy it i will just keep him,but just thot about changing things around.
let me no and can make arrangements with you.

hi everyone, have added sum corals to the tank now, they are:
Leather Coral (toadstool) - Sarcophytum
Bush/tree coral x4 - Nepthea sp.
Pulse - Xenia Elongata

How do you fit the actinic light to the wood/glass slidey lid thing?
I was thinking of getting a Interpet PC light or if that's too hard to fit, just a 15W T8, but how do they stick on ? If I bought the arcadia T5 controller, I could get the endcaps with sticky pads on (the waterproof ones), but these are way too expensive for my liking.
Thanks

I think someone mentioned this on another thread, maybe do a quick search it may find it but, I siliconed the light holders and reflector to the glass thing.
cheers. By light holders I mean the plastic clips that come with a reflector, so the end caps are NOT glued in position.
[QUOTE=Matt I,Oct 29 2004, 14:19]hi all ive just finished getting my 2nd lot of liverock in. got abt 18KG now in the tank. heres a quick pic of how things are at the mo: :D :D

Oo oo oo, love the rock work style. A bit like an extinct volacnoe crater - very nice :)
Is it cemented together too, nice idea, makes it more stable  If so, what did you use?
tis nice aquascaping. Want to come and do mine ?
I added a purple acro and a velvet starfish at weekend, I've removed the Tunze stream from the decor rock and installed it at the top of the tank to prevent the starfish being minced. Also dropped the transformer down from the 6200 to a 6100 to prevent fish being splatted against glass by force of stream !
Sold Half of each of my euphylias and the cup coral I had to make space for further acros.
will post a pic b4 end of week.
hi guys, sorry late reply, cheers for the rock scaping! :D its just placed 2gether but they interlock so no worries. but it gives me the chance to move bits around, ive gota take a full tank shot soon cos its change alittle since then! :o

Hey Guys
A couple of questions aimed at the chromis owners:
I am picking mine up on Friday and would like your opinions/experiences on the following:
1. Live Rock placement, i know it has been widely discussed on other threads, but I am still unsure particularly with the size of the chromis to place directly on glass, eggcrate, or on the substrate. I like the idea of the eggcrate, but do i need a reef clean arrangement under it?
2. Substrate, again widely discussed with lots of opinions, but I am more interested on the views of the chromis owners, i.e what type and how deep.
Sorry if im going over old ground here, but want to get it right first time
Cheers
Victor
Hi Vic
I have just placed my rock on top of the sand and have not had any problems, think the clean up crew will eat anything that goes in there altho with placing it on the sand, the worry is,if something you intrduce is a bit of a digger,if it digs the sand round a rock then it can fall or move causing the top rocks to fall and poss do a lot of damage, imo if using egg crate you would need a pump arrangement blowing anything out altho you would have eggcrate raised off the glass using pipe etc underneath so would be easy enough to do."anyway" all 3 have been used lots and arguments for and against each 1.
i have coral sand but you could use live sand or sugar fine sand, mine is around an inch deep-it comes upto the bottom of the wooden piece that goes round the tank.
i would also consider another pump as i felt i didnt have enough flow with just the 1 that comes with the tank.

Yeah still undecided on the egg crate, definately only want a shallow sand bed though, more aesthetic than anything else. May look at the reef clean system..
i would also consider another pump as i felt i didnt have enough flow with just the 1 that comes with the tank.
I was thinking of ditching the flow pump that comes with tank,a bit big and bulky IMO, and getting a pair of Maxi Jet PH.
Cheers
the eggcrate could be the best option and a small pump at the bottom connected to flexy pipe with holes drilled in it interlocking the small pieces of pipe that hold up the eggcrate and that would keep it all clean.
on the other side if you want to make it look as natural as poss you have to hide the eggcrate at the front with rock etc
its not an easy choice as in 6 months you cant or dont want to strip it all down.i would say both will work very well,if you have the time/can get eggcrate and other bits and pieces go for that, that way you can always take it out when the tank is cycling but if you cant manage it dont worry about it.
Mark
yep i agrre with the deepth of the sand to be just around the line of the piece of wood finish around the bottom. all my rock is just placed 2gether, but its interlocking so no worries on falling over.

The bicolour arrived well last night Mark. I met your brother in Tesco's car park, Thirsk at 11.00pm. Must of looked odd swapping a package at Tesco's at 11.00pm.
Anyway, did not hang around and by 11.30pm the fish dissappeared into the liverock.
Got home from work tonight and he is out and about, looks a stunning fish. He has been sizing up my yellow tang, and vice versa, but this mutual aggression is quite mild, and they seem to be settling down. He is a greedy little bugger too.
Thanks for the fish. I will get some photo's posted at the weekend for you.
I am pleased he arrived here ok, and a great addition to my reef. My too kids think the bicolour is great too.

Hi guys,
Well after much deliberation and tooing and froing, I have decided to go for the supported live rock setup.
Will be adding a Seio 2400lt/hr powerhead for additional flow. I have heard that the AM biostar has a tendancy to let go of the pump, can anyone ellaborate on this, as the last thing I want is a mini water fountain out the back of the tank.
Any comments appreciated.

Hi Victor
looking good, you have put a good bit work into it so far.
the problem about the biostar letting go is-its a push on type fit from pump to skimmer so if this becomes detatched the pump will still keep pumping untill the water gets below that level so the top 3 or 4 inces ends up on the floor.it didnt happen to me but make sure you check this every now and then to make sure its on ok.some people glued this but reason i didnt was to take apart and clean the pump.
HTH
Mark
Mark,
Is the pump becoming detached because it moves down the glass on its suckers? I can easily resolve this by either sliconing the suckers to the glass, or making a glass shelf for the pump to sit on.
Cheers
Victor
this is possible how it happens or the skimmer has a bit of movement when it is put on so tighten the clamps up now and then,i think its fine i wouldnt do anything yet and once you get it together you can see what you think,if you stuck suckers to glass remember imo you still need to get the pump out to clean it.best idea would be glue pipes together but think it would be hard to take off in one go as you would have pump and skimmer.
i dont think it will come off although i did read it happened to someone
Mark
anyone else finding that there tanks are leeking ? Im getting a good drip down the side of the tank from the top left back, Where there are several parts of glass that meet.
I have silicated teh skimmer pipes at hte last water change - still paranoid.
Simon, a leak? Is it still under garantee?
P.S> still debating on getting a Tunze steam into mine...
yup, its leeking but right at the top of the tank, just under the cross braces.
get a stream m8 :-) I have one in my tank its well worth it.
Hi Simon,
Thing is, I'm using XXX fine grade aragonite as substrate, likely to cause a problem? (I need the sand, I have 3 wrasses that sleeps under the fine sand)
Also I head Strems are quite big, bit difficult to fit inot the back panel of a Chromis? What's your own experience on using/ fitting one?
P.S. Also, at the moment I'm thinking about ways to add surface skimming to the Chromis. Any ideas/ suggestions will be most appreciated! Thanks
Also I head Strems are quite big, bit difficult to fit inot the back panel of a Chromis? What's your own experience on using/ fitting one?
I was also going to fit a Tunze stream, but I think its just a bit too much (flow) for the tank.
I have ordered a Seio 820 steam/alternative from the US, for the price I'll give it a go, and rid the tank of any other powerheads, and at 820g turnover wont be quite as volatile at the Tunze.
I'll let you know how I get on, once I receive it.
Cheers
Victor
Cheers! :)
At the moment I'm trying to decide between a Tunze 6000 (running on 2000/ 4500) pulse vs 4 Aquamedic PF1000 powerheads running 1000lph each, but with a FLO head to make caustic flow pattern.
Tunze is so expensive LOL!.
Katsura
I like the PF1000, the only problem IMO is that they are so bulky compared to say a MJ1200, 4 in there would be a bit claustrophobic IMO ;)
I would definately rather ditch the powerhead approach for movement and replace with a stream if possible, I am still using my PF1000 for the reefclean though.
Victor
Hey VMlopes,
Just got a quick question for you,
- Did you make the base for the live rock yourself?
- How many litres is that tank?
- How much live rock will you be adding?
Lastly what are you guys paying for live rock? Ive got a 112L tank and live rock is costing me an arm and a leg and I never seem to have enough Ive got 12 KGs costing around £140 ????
PS More Pictures Please !!!
i had two 1000lph powerheads,1 with tank and just bought extra 1 for top around 25quid if helps
tank holds around 33-35 gal think that works out around 125litres although could be wrong with litres
in a chromis id say most people would have around 20kg in there tank and yes live rock is not cheap but you would have been better buying a box from your LFS or one of the board sponsors 20kg would cost around 185.
cheers
Mark
ps i have taken some pictures before i changed tanks and hope to put them on over the weekend
Ive got abt 19kg in mine.
Victor lovely work you've done!
Looks very tidy!
Whats the material you've put around the egg crate supports?
Is it clear perspex?
Whats the material you've put around the egg crate supports?
Its just the B & Q 2mm thick clear acrylic, easy to cut and once heated up a little easy to bend into shape. And then sliconed to the tank.
Pipework is the 25mm VDL stuff from Watford, the actual supports are 25mm sockets with a series of holes drilled through them for flow. All the other stuff is the slovent cement type with the final socket having a 25x16mm reducing bush fitted which is just the right size for the AquaMedic PF1000 outlet nozzle. :D
The actual pipe under the rock has a series of holes starting small and increasing in 3 sizes to the blanked end, hope the PF1000 is up to the job?
I will be on the lookout for some live rock, heard that Acropora House is good about £7.00/kg will have to try there first.
Have you guys put any polysterene under the tank or just straight onto the stand?
Cheers
Victor
PS If anyone wants to try the same on there tank let me know, because I have a lot of photos.
Hi Victor
the tank is designed to fit on the stand without anything in between

Okay, so I decided to save a bit money and stick my 2 spare powerheads from old tanks into th Chromis....
What a mess! it totally destroyed the look of the tank.
But now I have in excess of 6500 liters of turn over, that's > 45x turn over, the mushrooms did not like it at all.... Will wait and see if they can adapt to the extra flow.
In the mean time, I think I gotta save up and get a Tunze.
Does anyone wants to sell their used 6000 for upgrading? ;)
Katsura
But now I have in excess of 6500 liters of turn over, that's > 45x turn over, the mushrooms did not like it at all.... Will wait and see if they can adapt to the extra flow.
The stream 6000 is rated upto 7000lt/hr so you will have to turn it down a fair way, plus the 2000lt/hr from the skimmer and its going to be whirlpool city in there .
Have you looked at Seio pumps, I think someone on here is looking for extra numbers/people to order from Singapore, good flow "v" cost.
Cheers
Victor
Cheers for the tip! I'll look into it now.
Is it controllable like the Stream? I really loved the pulse movement from one. (Reminds me of standing in the white sandy shore of Mexico...)
I'm sure my acros will like it more than me :D
No it cannot be controlled like the stream, or even connected to a surger at present, do think that they are bringing out a controller of sorts soon though.

Hi mark - your Bi-colour angel, is he a coral nipper? Heard theya re especially prone to picking.
Also, is that yellow eye or tomini tang?
Bi colour angel was no problems at all although i no some can nip corals, hes now been given a new home in sowerby reefs tank as i had other plans when i got the perc tank and he was asking about it,glad it went to a good home.
there has been bit debate on yellow fish-it was sold as carribean tang but i have been told its a yellow eye kole tang-lovely fish have seen them in blue,i have a yellow tang in perc and he is around half the size but they seem best pals.

Hey guys,
Finally got the water, salt and 15kgs of live rock in my tank :D, all running ok until I started up the Biostar, first problem the 2 x 45deg elbows that connect the pump to the biostar are not the correct length. i.e the pump does not sit square against the back of the tank.
Result within 30 minutes of running, pump disconnects its self from elbows, and i have a lovely little fountain spaying out the back of the tank, that Charlie Dimmick would be proud of .
Anyway I have cut back one of the elbows, glued the two together and then glued these to the pump, pushed everthing home and it seems fine , have heard that some people have made a type of cradle arrangement for the pump using cable ties, any one care to comment. Surely Aquamedic should have sorted this on their tank/package?
Also even with the air turned down to minimum I am still getting micro bubbles into the tank, I assume I have the levels correct, it is just under the collection cup neck, not producing much at the mo' but I guess there is not much in there at the mo'. Does it need running in to get rid of the micro bubbles? How much air do you guys run with?
Cheers
Victor
you will prob always get micro bubbles Victor,i thought the two pieces just pushed together no problems?didnt really have any trouble with mine - not good they came apart though.will you still be able to get the skimmer and pump off in one piece now that there glued together for cleaning?they wont come apart again
you wont get anything out the skimmer to start with as nothing in to take out at the mo-it should be bubbling at the bottom of the funnel slightly up the cup,you will get the hang of it,make sure the skimmer is pushed into the chamber firmly as i have found different results where i thought it was on and working, didnt produce much so washed, put back on and fills up lot quicker and better.my skimmer worked better imo with the black air bit off completely its just trial and error.
i didnt have any cradle arrangement i found that the pump stuck to the glass ok and was held in place while connected to the skimmer.

Mark

I have only glued the elbows together and then onto the pump, still pushes onto the skimmer, I can still get the pump and skimmer apart, just <_<. The elbow then just unscrews off the pump for cleaning.

When you say, push the skimmer into the chamber, do you mean the collection cup, pretty sure that its pushed on firmly.
Ran it last evening with the air fully on, still getting micro bubbles but not as many , its bubbling and frothing away nicely obviously not pulling anything out yet. Is there any benefit in running it whilst cycling? I find that its quitened down considerably the only noise, which is more a gargle, is from the air intake, anyone care to comment on this?
Cheers
Victor
Time to revive this thread again :D
How's everyone Chromis tanks progressing?
Also I'd like to ask for suggestions to see if we can add surface skimming to teh Chromis tank.
Any change to adapt the BioFlotor skimmer to take water from upper column + surface as well as below the water line?
the way the skimmer is set up on the chromis it is skimming a lot from the top as the water enters the motor which is only around 6" from the top of the tank.do you feel your not skimming much from the top?are you getting crap/oil film on top of water?
Mark
Hi Mark: yes that seem to be the woe of my tank. the tank water is very clear yet I always get gunk and oily film on the surface.
I'm thinking DIYing a funnel plug in to fit onto top of skimmer intake, do you see any other ways of doing this?
Katsura,
Don't have the problem on mine yet ;), but read this (http://www.reefpark.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10243&hl=biostar) may help.
Cheers
Victor
i would say your not moving the water enough at the top,has your pf1000 power filter got a 45degree attachment on it?if so point this towards the top of the water and this should solve the problem, you should have ripples on the surface
HTH
Mark
THanks for teh suggestion Victor, I will ask clippo as it looks he has done the DIY successfully.
Mark: I have 4 1000 X power head with Hydor flo that breaks the surface in random intervals.
Any more updates guys? There must be a lot of other Chromis users out there!
Just in the process of setting up a silver chromis for the wife. She was never happy about my refusal to have a nem in my reef (cos of the streams) so bought one of these for her.
Has been modified by Danny at Watford into a nem friendly tank. Been drilled for two closed loops and small sump made for the cabinet. Skimming is by a schuran jetskim 100.
Will be home to 2 clowns and eventually a nem, with a few softies and maybe a single acro or nice monti, but basically a species tank.

:o Flippin heck paul, i think thats the most customised chromis ive seen :) Top job mate looks the business cant wait to see some more pics :)

Hiya everyone. I'v only just found this thread, was put forward to me by a mate. Iv had a chromis setup for about 4months now. I bought it as my first ever marine aquarium, Iv had tropical, goldfish in the past.
After getting over the cost of the setup I got down to it. I'v got about 12 kilos of live rock in there and live sand, all my equipment is standard with the exception of 1 extra powerhead. I must admit its took me a long time, in my opinion to get it going, I had trouble early on making silly mistakes that newcomers to the hobby are bound to make and lost my first couple of fish within a week (they were added about a month since setting the tank up, this was the reason I put it down too) So I decided to leave the tank for a good couple of months and start from fresh. I added a couple of corals ( toadstool leather, star polyps?, + some other type of polyp coral, not sure name) and crabs/snails etc. Since then I'v built everything up slowly and now have:
12 Kilos live rock (FIJI)
Live sand
Corals
Around 20 hermits, both red and blue
Snails
Cleanser Shrimp
Red Starfish
2 Common Clowns.
Like I say, everything is standard in the setup. Everythings coming along well now, I'll try and get some pics up and let you know how its going.
About the film on the water surface, I have noticed this aswell. I think it is down to lack of water movement on the surface but have found that by repeatably placeing a peice of kitchen roll on the surface and soaking it up, this does get rid of it. Ofcourse its temporary and not very technical but it does work :D
Good luck to everyone with there setups, look forward to hearing any news from you all

Ok Folks
Looking to down grade my current setup. Was originally thinking of a chromis!!!
Just read this thread, now having second thoughts
Leaking tanks? Pump disconnecting from skimmer?
Would love some advice on wheater a chromis would be a good purchase, or am i better spending my money on something else?
Thanks
Ivan
I'm also considering downgrading to a Chromis as well Ivan, and my thoughts were to add a partition at the back to house skimmer, etc within the tank - similar style to the Aquamedic Percula tanks.
I'd be interested if anyone else has tackled this.

what I was thinking was, build a small glass weir in the back left top corner, to house the skimmer pump. If the skimmer pump can be turned around 90 degrees, and sat on the bottom of the weir, to prenent any downwards movements. Also means that by having a weir in place you are skimming the surface.
Any existig owners, can the pump be turned around like this?
Thats if my description makes any sense. :D
paul.
this chromis conversion is awesome.
start up an individual thread for it as it deserves to stand alone!
yes you could turn the pump 90 degrees but you would have to plumb it up to the skimmer if you were still going to use the hang on one where it sits on the tank but would be easy to do that
Mark

this might sound stupid but in the other pics it looks like you have 4 holes in the front of the tank, yet in the filled tank pics you dont, is it me or is there sumin on the tank.
also what flow rate do most chromis users have in there tanks?
I thought that aswell about that holes by looking again I think they are washers or somethign like that placed on the tank
They are the original rubber washers off the tank connectors, taken off and replaced with silicone. I see what you mean though.
Flow in the tank is about 20x hour and seems about right, there is no noticable dead spots.
Paul :thanx:
there we go then as i thought i was goin mad
so whats that then ya think around 2500lph ya think?
i have an ocean runner 3500 that i was goin to use as a return pump and also split off into various outlets in the tank to give good flow and mean less power heads etc. but thinkin now this might be a bit quick
Reckon the Oceanrunner will be a bit powerful, my chromis has 32mm overflow piping and runs a newjet 1700 as a return pump, works well and seems perfectly matched.
Paul :thanx:
hmmmm might have to rethink the idea then, with already having that thoght i would do for flow rate and everything all in one go but see what you mean i guess. i've managed to get a scwd so will be runnin that on one of the returns so that should hopefully give me some decent flow rate around the tank
My return pump is a NewJet 1700 and the two closed loops are NewJet 2300's and really i wish i had more flow, maybe gone for NewJet 3000's or Eheim 1262's.
The closed loop pipework is demountable though so is easy to upgrade if needed, shall see how it goes.
Paul
pity i cant split the ocean runner up somehow, lol
i might do what you have done and set the 3500 for a closed loop and then get sumin simpler for the sump pump
Will try and get a lights on pic up tomorrow for the tank, looking good now!!
Paul :thanx:
Paul,
What is the weir made of? Looks like blue glass?
Does anyone use these tanks with something like a Deltec MCE600 hang on as I understand the flotor unit supplied with a Chromis is not much good?
Tim
The weir is glass with blue acrylic siliconed to it.
:thanx: Paul
Does anyone use these tanks with something like a Deltec MCE600 hang on as I understand the flotor unit supplied with a Chromis is not much good?
Tim, I have an Aqua C Remora Pro hanging on mine got to say pulls alot more out than the Biostar, smaller pump also.
Would have thought that the MCE600 fits, no pump in the water which will be good , have just received a Newjet 2300 which I am going to plumb externally to run my hang on skimmer. Will post pics.
Cheers
Victor
Just invested in a Chromis tank and stand only as I already have a lot of kit on my other tank I'll be stripping down.
I bought a Deltec MCE600 that hangs very neatly on the back and therefore no pumps in the tank - at the mo.
The next part of the plan is to use my Eheim 1250 from my old tank to run some kind of irrigation under the rockwork.
Also I'll be using my stream for circulation above the rockwork.
Need to now come up with a way of hiding these two pumps and the heater. I'm thinking along the lines of one corner being partitioned with blue acrylic (like you would a weir). The acrylic would have castleations cut top and bottom to draw water from both parts of the tank and then the two pumps would sit behind this.
Not totally convinced at the mo, so I'm looking at an empty tank as I ponder the options. Any suggestions?
Also, it's not until you have the tank in your house that you realise just how long the wall brackets would need to be to hang the light over the tank. Hanging from the ceiling would be the next option, but that would be quite a long wire. What have the rest of you done?
Also need to come up with a plan as to how to transfer from livestock, rock, etc from my old tank.
Tim
Tim,
The setup sounds good the MCE600 should rock on a small tank like ours , a good thing IMO, would rather overskim than under.
I have also got a reefclean under my liverock, just used the supplied PF1000 and hard piped it, the rock sructure is built up now and everything is covered in coraline you can hardly notice it.
See it here (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=30182&st=75).
Get some pics up we all like them

Picking up my Chromis tomorrow, ex shop display model, £350 Bargain. Few ideas floating around my head at the moment.
1. Make a small weir in top corner of tank, two reasons, firstly, can move the suction cup plate of of the PH2000 on to the bottom of the pump, and stick to the bottom of the weir (if that makes sense) to prevent the pump attempting to slide down the glass and disconnection from the skimmer. The second benifit, as i'll have a weir, i'll effectively be surface skimming.
2. Forget the whole first idea, drill the tank, and have a small sump on the go.
Question, seen a few of you are discussing adding MCE skimmers, is the standard one Sh*te. I know my 5000 baby wasn't amazing.
Ivan
Seems i've started something here with drilling and sumping chromis's. :P
Paul
I went for the MCE600 as the shop selling the tank said the skimmer bundled with the tank wasn't up to much.
I'm moving away from a sump. I know this is the oposite as most people seem to progress to a sump. Yes, you can hide all your kit in the sump, but also you've got something that dries up too fast, in my experience, even with auto top ups.
You'll still get evaporation, but if the tank is a contained body of water, such as the Chromis, then it's going to be some time before anything dries up.
That's my reason for moving away from a sump. I'll still need auto top ups, but I think it will be possible for the tank not being so dependent on me being there all the time.
Tim

Can you tell me if the brackets came with the Chromis or did you purchase them seperatly
Thanks

Really nice tank you have BTW
Del
Simon mentioned about the brackets:
The ones I have are Guiesman from www.paraquatics.co.uk BUT, took over 2 months to be delivered. I have designed some brackets that I hope to start selling soon (my company bashes metal so its a sideline !) I paid 45 quid for the Guiesman brackets, just getting costsing in on the ones I want to sell. will let you know if your intrested.
Hope that helps.
Tim
the brackets dont come with the chromis
cheers
Mark
Thanks Guys, I will pass the info on

just hope mine looks half as good as some of th ones on here do once it's set up.
i've gota take the live rock etc out of my current system ad swap it all over, if i bag up the rock underwater and put in my new tank underwater in theory the tank wont have to cycle will it and i can use it straight off with reguards to stockin etc??
Just thought I'd update in where I am with my Chromis bought a last week.
I've been experimenting with a box construction for the back of the tank to house pumps, heater, etc. This has been done in MDF until I get it right and will then pass on to Taunton Aquarium who can get Seashell Aquariums to make it in some nice blue acrylic.
I plan to put a Stream in the back compartment with the flow split in 2 to supply both sides of the tank. A couple of 1000lph powerheads will pass water under a drilled false bottom to keep flow under the rockwork.
Lighting will be via a Geisemann 250w halide and skimming via a Deltec MCE600.
I will use the DIY calcium reactor off my old system and also the auto top up. Thats about all that will go in the cupboard, so this will be much less cluttered than my present sump based tank.
I don't really have any pictures to post yet - its an empty chromis and you all know what that looks like. The MDF prototype doesn't really make for a good picture so will post something as things progress.
I've just bought a couple of 18.5" shelf brackets from B & Q that look like they will do the job for the light. The type where you fit a bracket with slots in it to the wall and you can then adjust the height of the shelf. The fitting looks sturdy enough and also has the benefit of being able to adjust the height of the light without fiddling with the wires. Also comes in a decent looking silver.
Tim
wont the stream be a bit bog for a chromis!!
if folks could have look here it would be cool  link (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=43907)
I've tested the Stream in the tank already (using freshwater) and it works a treat. I've fitted a Tee to the front of the stream to split the output. This will then be piped along the back at the bottom and directed towards the front at the top. This way it will avoid blasting the sand.
Several people on this site have already tried splitting the output from a Stream, with success, so this seemed the way to go.
Tim
have to get some pics of it in the tank mate set up so folks can see what it's like and that
Here's a few pictures of how I will be using my Stream. Currently the prototype is built in MDF and then will be made from acrylic. It will need to have castleations and holes drilled for water flow.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0775_2.jpg
I don't have all the pipe fittings required at the mo, so this has just been assembled to give an idea of how it will be done.
The tower will also house the heater and two 1000lph powerheads to push water flow through a false acrylic bottom to provide flow under the rocks.
Tim
thats a bit posh aint it once it's done
what will you be using for skimming as the only place a can see for a skimmer is on the back but you have you toer there now etc.
should be fetchin my chromis tongiht so cant wait to start work on setting it up and sorting out all the fun that is piping
I have a Deltec MCE600 that will hang on the back. It fits in there very neatly.

Decided to keep things as simple as possible. Using the standard skimmer, but have made a small weir to house the PH2000. This will give two advantages.
1. The suction plate can be moved to the bottom of the PH2000 and attached directly to the base of the weir. So basically the pump can't slide down the back of the tank, disconnecting itself and washing the walls.
2. I'll now be surface skimming. :D
Hey that surface skimmer looks the business, where did you get it made, or did you do it yourself?
Care to make me one

Just measure up what i wanted to do, and got some glass cut to size at LFS (Fit filtration, same as InS@nE uses!). Bonded it all up yesterday, fitted it to the tank today  So hope i've done a good job lol. Looks OK,
when i got mine drilled there today i said about gettin the overflow box sorted and he was really good to said oncei know give him a shout with sizes he'll get it cut for me and he an do it in the blue glass too so it looke nice

Mine did when i first set it up - try tightening the clamps - that helped but it was still a bit noisy - but now it has been running for a couple of months it has quietened down. My boyfriend thought it sounded like we had a loud fridge in the room and wasn't too happy :D
The MCE runs quietly. I'm testing it on my old tank at the mo and it works really well. Very easy to setup too.
It also fits really neatly at the back of the Chromis.
Tim
Tim,
Does the MCE600 clamp on ok, i.e that little plastic sliding clamp where have you got it? On the brace bar?
Pics would be good.
Cheers
Victor
The MCE clamps over the brace bar. It's a very solid fit - it definitely wont be coming off.
I've got a note to send you pictures Victor as soon as I move the skimmer across from my old tank to the Chromis (probably in the next few days).
Tim
Quick question
Does the Chromis come with both White & Actinic Lighting as Standard or not

Del
just comes with a standard 10,000k halide bulb mate of the 150 flavour.
when i bought my tank it had been fitted with a standard t8 actinic on the little cover glass at the back, hth
Here's somes updated pictures of the build so far:
The base. Sand will go around the sides. The base/some of the sand will be covered by rockwork:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0787.jpg
Where the powerhead (maxijet 1000) will sit on the base to provide flow up through the rockwork. The powerhead connects to a small tube going through the base to minimise plumbing as elbows, etc can restrict flow:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0788.jpg
Rear view of tower. This will house a stream, the maxijet and the heater:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0789.jpg
In the tank. The tubes are bigger than I wanted, but the 50mm nozzle on the Stream dictates this. It'll get hidden by rockwork though.:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0790.jpg
View down the wier. The pumps can be removed from here:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0791.jpg
Rear view showing the stream in place:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0792.jpg
A Deltec MCE600 mounted on the back of the Chromis. Once the small cover glass is in place, it looks neat:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0793.jpg
The MCE600 in operation (testing on my old tank). That's more bubbles than any other skimmer I've had:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCF0795.jpg
At the moment all acrylic is held together with sticky tape, the tank filled and the pumps/flow being tested.
All looks well - good flow and no noise so I can now permanently glue the acrylic panels together.
More updates as things progress.

Anyone using standard bioflotor skimmer?. I know that they're not brilliant, but i need it to do its job. The problem i'm having is that the Bio wheel is not rotating. I've cleaned the sponge, and its all been put back together correct, but the bloody thing won't rotate. Any suggestions??
Ivan
can you turn the wheel by hand freely?possibly not in the fixing points as you need to push it down,i think you can also put them in the wrong way round and everything still fits as sure this happened to me,check that 2
hth
Mark
come on tim, give us an update!
That's as far as I've got so far. Everything has been permanently glued now, so filling and transfer of stock is getting closer.
I'm being held up now trying to get some new hanging wires for my Giesemann light so I can hang it from the ceiling.
Tim
All stock from my old tank was transferred last night. Time will tell if they survive the move. I had loads of live rock left over that I just didn't have enough space to fit in.
The blue tower now houses, 2 maxijets for flow up under the rockwork, a stream, heater and small internal canister filter.
Here's the stock in place in the new tank:

Hi all, I really like the look of the aquamedic chromis tank and I’m seriously thinking of getting one. Since my only way of getting it is by mail, I want to be completely sure it is what i want beforehand. Can somebody please answer my questions?
What are the exact measurements of the cabinet inside? Are there any hinges? If so, what is the actual full space for a possible sump?
:thanx: in advance for your help

Distance accross from edge of hinge to opposite side of frame is 340mm. About 335mm from back of hinge to back of cabinet.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Stan. Now I know the type of sump I like won't fit in there (with refugium and inside skimming) <_<

scwd to each front top corner, rear reef bar and a central output goin around the front to a single output

ok, I thought I'd revive the thread and add my new Chromis :D
It's now been up and running for a week now in my office so no really exciting pictures to look at, this is what it looks like...
http://www.nuts-bolts.net/images/tank.jpg
http://www.nuts-bolts.net/images/under.jpg
Tank is fairly standard, I bought it from our lfs second hand (only a few months old) and it came with a custom weir built-in and an auto top-up system with sump.
The custom weir will be going to make way for a flow box so I can use the sump as an actual sump instead of a holder for RO water, it'll also house a calcium reactor and different skimmer. reason for going this route is that the tank is next to our bedroom and the skimmer/pump is not exactly quiet, I also need room for the calc reactor too.
There is 20kg of fiji live rock in there at the mo, 5 turbos and 5 red legs, live rock is now starting to sprout some interesting looking things so hopefully I'll get some free corals our of it.
Stocking wise I haven't really got a clue what to put in there, this is my first marine tank let alone reef so I'm busily trying to work out what things I like are called before a trip to the lfs
Tank now has a chiller on there as it was getting waaaay too hot evenn with a fan running over it, it sits in my office and with computers and stuff running, together with very little air flow in this side of the house it was getting to danger levels. The chiller is only the small aqua medic one but it seems to just about keep the temperature fairly constant now I've tweaked the flow rate.
Only other equipment I've added so far is another powerhead (1200lh)
I'll add some more pics when it starts to get a bit more interesting in there!
params at the moment are:
Temp: 26
SG: 1.026
PH: 8.12 (which is a bit low but I need to re-calibrate my meter)
Nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0.1
Ammonia: 0
Calcium: 400mg/l
Phosphate: 0
KH: 6.72
Kev
sounds good hairyduck, what do you plan to stock it with?
Haven't a clue! Need to get myself a decent book that tells me the name of everything!
Any suggestions?
finally set my chromis up today
still got to sort the sump out thou as ran out of water!!
but main tank is there and al the piping for the sump etc is there and sorted. all need to do is bring the auto top up from my other tank, connect the skimmer up and bring the sand band from the other tank and i'm sorted :D
ill try and get some pics up once i'm sorted, the rock and coral is all in but live stock still in my other tank at the min :(

I thought I'd bring the thread back to the top again :D
Finally got around to finishing my sump, just need to squeeze an ap600 and the PF600 in there now, it's gonna be tight!
http://www.nuts-bolts.net/images/sump.jpg
Still no fish or coral yet, another few weeks and I can start the stocking
Hi all, great looking tanks, just bought a chromis 2nd hand off percula-120-bow, top bloke, his perc looks stunning too!!
anyways...
the foam filter attachment to the powerhead, should I bin it? Is it not a possible nitrate factory?
i think most people just take the foam out and use it as a water mover. i've actually took teh fitler basket off mine and stuck it out the way at the back where no fish can get near the inlet and works fine, it's be coming out thou soon as will have a close loop in there once i got the last few bits of pipe
hmm, closed loop eh? I was fancing one myself! how have you placed the PH minus the media basket then mate? Dont fancy mashed fish!! :o
it's kinda wedge up neat the top and has bits of lr round it, it's only there temp untill the closed loop is up and sorted plus it's on a timer and is only switched on during the day when the fish are up and about and aware, one the lights go down the power heads off so they dont take a wander in during there sleep.
it's been like that now for about 3 weeks and as of yet al is cool. but aint goin to risk it for ever thou
i'm still waitin to get the pipe for the closed loop, got it all drawn up just need to go and get the parts.
i'm also puttin a water change system in with the closed loop not sure if it will work but i'm hoping it will, lol. it will cause a few bubble in the system when the changes take place but just hoping it will save time and less spills in the long run :whistling:
added the extra plumbing in for the other bits.... getting a bit confusing now!! do i win the contest for most amount of pipe used to plumb in a chromis
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/IMG_2018_002.JPG
has any one got any more pictures
im going to put a reef clean under my life rock what size of powerheads or pumps should i use and would i be better rigging these up to a wave maker or not the pipe work will be under neath the egg create and the flow contained inside a perspex or accrlic outside wall
:thanx: nick
when i put mine in i had a bar that goes accross the back of the tank at the bottom, i placed a bit or glass around it like a barrier to stop and sand getting suck in when i stop the return pump. the return is an or3500 that splits into 3 return the reef bar, front and a scwd to each rear every nown and again i close the flow to the returns bar the reef bar to give it a quick jet out like but nothing major comes out so i'm asuming(sp) that it's good enough for what i need. when split down i would say your lookin at most about 1000lph for my bar
dunno if thats any use to you thou, guess it also depends on the pipe run ya have. you can see my pipe run if ya like back thru the members tanks its about somewhere but will be quite a few pages back now
 for that wasnt sure to use one 1000 pump or 2x1000 pumps
i have though ordered 2 pumps ill see how it goes with both in situ if its too powerful ill just use one of them for extra surface movement
:thanx: nick
try it dude nowt to loose. in mine i have a or3500 return and a or2500 on closed loop and there is loads fo low in there  :D
to much actually as my sand keeps moving
I have a 2400 lph sump return, 3 x 1200 maxijets and a 6000lph stream! It's a fine balancing act between sanity and a sand storm
   and i thought mine was a bit choppy ;)
which 2 seio pumps should i use in my chromis it will be a softie coral i want one to be used as surface water movement the other to blow detrius out from under the live rock which will be on egg crate supported by small pipe connecters with holes drilled in them
:thanx: nick
Im getting a sump fitted on my Chromis the weekend
I will get pics when its done :)
Thanks
Elliott
cool :-) did you get an overflow sorted then?

does anybody have any sugestions
a couple of m620s should be fine, the m820s would probably be about the limit for a tank of our size otherwise you'll end up with a sandstorm!
that being said I've got 9600 lph of powerheads in mine but that is too much!

hi kev
would you place one one the top back of the tank and one behind the live rock blasting crap to the front i was thinking of the smaller 620 to do this just incase it caused a sand storm at the front of the tank, but at the top i thought about a 820 or 1100 for tank flow
nick
I have a stream 6000 at the top right of the tank set to pretty much the lowest setting (probably about 3000lph) then on the right hand side I have 2 x 1200 lph modified maxijets pulsed from the aquatronica (5 minutes on and 2 minutes off)
down the back of my rockwork I have a spraybar attached to another 1200lph maxijet to blast the rockwork (again pulsed 4 minutes on and 2 minutes off), and the return from the sump fed through another spray bar.
the 2 maxijets on the left hand side of the tank are pretty redundant as they create sunami type waves at the moment  and they'll probably be going soon.
The stream at the top causes most of the sand storm effect but once the sand settles into position it pretty much stays there. You should be fine with the pumps you suggest, I'd probably go for the 820 up top as I'm not sure they seio's are that adjustable (though I may be wrong!)
Kev
thanks for the advise kev

and a shot round the back of the tank. I've built the LR up on eggcrate that has an inch of space below and I'm running a MaxiJet through the LR to get some circulation around the rock. Hopefully it'll do some good.
