Hi all
Finally bought my Percula 120.....even though it is slightly too big for the room :)
Initial thoughts are......the tank and layout....are really good.....the only dislikes are the slight hum on the pumps.....which i am trying to find an answer to slightly quieten down....and its a bit difficult to reach the back compartments....but not too bad
Will post some pics on the stages of setting it up later
Joe
invest in a kick stool.. or a little step thingy.. invaluable for reaching down the back!
best of luck
m
SNAP!
Hi, i also have a Perc 120 in silver, i found that the high level of sound from the pumps decreased over time, sometimes i found that if you move them a little the buzz/hum can change dramatically, just a thought you could try.
Good luck, hope all goes well for you
Martin
hi >>marine<< :D
mine had a loud hum to it,then i did a water change and now its almost silent
good luck mate! :P

Hi all
Thanx for all your advice and interest
Found myself a good little stool....Hopefully in time, the hum will decrease
Here are some pics.....I know you have seen the same type before...sorry B)

I would also confirm that the pumps will be very quiet after a few weeks.

Tank on stand....Really heavy !!
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tank%202.jpg
Filling up with r/o from hosepipe in kitchen....Only took 3 1/2 days !!!!
When half full, i added ALL the required salt, and it took 3 DAYS to dissolve.....so dont make the same mistake.....best to add gradually !!!
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Tank%203.jpg
Added a portion of live river shrimp to assist the maturing cycle..something to look at
Bought 26k of live rock to start the cycle, and give me some ideas as to the aquascaping

Day 4 Nitrite < 0.3
Day 5 > 0.3
Day 6 0.6
Will gradually be adding more llive rock
Hopefully this will be of interest to some of you old and new !!
If you think i have done anything wrong.....Please let me know !!
Joe
evening,
your a bit further ahead than me. One thing is that I was told to put the live rock on eggcrate to allow water to circulate underneath. If you read the thread in here called Big Build 3 Anna has some great pics of the egg crate she used. I've not gone to so much detail as she has, ie not added surround etc.
HTH

greg

Hi Greg
Must be honest, i am still thinking about the eggcrate. It would not take 5 mins to remove the rock
I am also impressed with Anna's setup, great workmanship and detail.....should that be ladieship ??
My priority is to mature the tank, which will take some time.....so i have untill then to decide.......Plus i will only be having a shallow sand bed
Joe
I've just cut my eggcrate up, don't think it can do any harm to have it, but then again from what I've read people have had rock sitting on the bottom without it as well!
Good luck, it'll be interesting to compare notes!
regards,
Greg

No harm at all Greg !!!
Just seen your latest pics. See where your coming from with the design...looks good !!
Would probably put more pipe in the centre of the eggcrate....try standing on it slightly in places and see if it dips...thats where you need more...remember how many kilo will be resting on it
Joe
starting to look great mate!
in the first of three pics is that some guy stealing your tv ;)

looks like it should be impressive once complete... doesn't the positioning of the tank in relation to the TV and seating give you problems with glare/reflections..... particularly as this tank has a MH? (I notice the MH seems to be quite close to the water surface in the last shot B)

If you don't use egg crate the results will be exactly the same.

doesn't the positioning of the tank in relation to the TV and seating give you problems with glare/reflections
Fortunatly no glare on the tv. Rippling reflection on wall behind the tank, and on ceiling. Bit like blackpool illuminations.
I put the M/H there just while i was working on the pumps. will try 20cm although the book says 30 cm. Dont really understand the theory of the heights, apart from dont let the water splash on the M/H glass.....Thanx for noticing
:)
Hi CC.....Thanx Will give you a ring

[/QUOTE]hi ive just set my perc 120 up why do they put the light cable on the left when the cable hole is on the right its on the right on the 90
Thanx for reminding me...Totally agree...Possibly because the light was designed before the tank ?? I had to extend the lead, to comfortably reach the sockets

Hi all
Quick update
Day 7 Nitrite 1.6
Day 7 " 3.2
Day 8 " 3.2 ......Could be going up....or down ??
Tank is now very clear
Still got about 50% of Live river shrimp left......Funny what you will stare into a tank and look at
Found one hitch-hiker.....some sort of snail, about 1 1/2 inches...with a wavey shell
SG 1.24
Temp 27 ...with M/H on
Temp 25.5 " " off
Moved the rock around a little, to get some ideas.....Gee !! ..This is hard
Will turn on the skimmer later for a bit, just for a play
May need some advice on setting up Please !!!
I dont intend to keep it running yet....due to no load in the tank
The only Mods iv done so far is
1 Put a piece of coarse sponge between the second comb and skimmer, to cut down the water noise slightly....as advised :)
2 Put some filter floss, under the trickle filter plate, above the bioballs....to catch some of the crud....as advised :) ..it works !!!
Any other mods I could try at this stage Please let me know
Thanx

Day 9 Nitrite 0.9 Going down....Whoope !!!!
Not lost any river shrimp
Ahhhhhh! Very nice!!
Now I've decided what I want for my next tank - and I've not even got my current one set up yet!!
Good taste in speakers too - nice KEFs!!
possibly try to even out temperature swing.... IMO 1.5c over 12hrs is on the high side (although I imagine other members may run this with no probs...).

Nitrite 0...Whoope
Added 6 large Snails
Adding more l/r soon...then start to aquascape.....well...throw some rocks around really
>>Marine<<
20-11-04, 19:18
Added another 15k of L/R 2 days ago
Spent 8 hours trying to arrange the rock....Gee its hard !!!!
Next day got a massive Ammonia spike....must have been a lot of die off
Seens like its re-cycling again....Nitrite has gradually gone up again...its reading 1.6 at the moment
Getting a lot of green algae now, as expected.....hopefully it will pass
Skimmer starting to pull out some nice gunk
Will add some pics later
>>Marine<<
21-11-04, 23:14
Nitrite going down.....0.3
Still got the green algae....doesn't seem as bad....maybe....just keep cleaning glass
Bought a 30lb bag of Aragamax suger size sand
Oh !!....and could not resist 6 brown leg hermits...one sand shifting starfish...will have to keep him fed till the sand dirtys up
I thought you'd couldn't add critters until your nitrite readings were down to zero (Maybe getting myself confused here!!)
Mine's also full of green algae, nowt in there at the moment, still getting nitrite readings.
Do you have air bubbles in the water column your skimmer sits in???
cheers,
greg
HI,
Was just wondering how you extended the cable to your halide, im setting up the same tank as you at them moment. Is it possible to go inside the halide and put in a new longer cable ? i didnt fancy doing my usual by twisting the ends of the new and orignal cable together and a bit of insulating tape to stop it falling off ;) hehe (joke)
Thanks
Stuart

Hi Kaos
Is it possible to go inside the halide and put in a new longer cable ?
No probs...as long as the power rating is the same....easy job.....don't forget to unplug first ;)
Hi Greg
I thought you'd couldn't add critters until your nitrite readings were down to zero
Technically correct....but as the nitrite was on the way down...never found a prob
Add critters gradually though
Do you have air bubbles in the water column your skimmer sits in
Yes...exactly the same as yours...and occasional large bubble.....took a few days to start working.....now working great

Pics on the way...not much to look at though....tank still cloudy after adding sand

Oh !! forgot....Glass normally covered in green algae....Just cleaned the glass
:)
Also had to lower the light to 20 cm because of the glre when sitting down.....got to keep the missus happy
Any Ideas of making a small deflector for the light ???....Must look tidy ;) :)
Joe
Looking good - where did you buy the setup? What comes with it?
As for the light glare when sitting down - not sure but the drop in height should be ok - I have mine about 15cm over the waterlevel.

Hi Kaos
Do you know what the power rating cable is that i need
The power rating for the lights are 340watts....Not too sure what that converts to in amps......Dont quote me but i believe that watts divided by volts = Amps
340watts divided by 240volts = 1.4 amps
Why not take the cable with you to the shop......They should be able to tell you by the size of the cable
Sorry cant be more helpfull
Joe

Hi all
Im going through a MASSIVE green algae bloom at the moment....kept cleaning the glass....then read that its better to leave it alone as it just spreads it more
Got a couple of Conches....Wierd looking things....but never stop working....good sand cleaners
Look like a large sphericle snail....with a nose like an elephant....been watching them for hours
Will try and ride out the algae bloom...think its normall...but open to ideas !!
Joe
Hi joe, nice tank u got there. IMO, you should go for thick DSB since your tank are sumpless.
Your MH is nice. i love the super slim design.
is the light system that comes with the perc 's any good ?, its just that theres a high percentage of folk who post pics of there percs on here have changed the light system from what comes with the perc ? thanks
Hi tabs
imo the light system on the percs is very good, they also look good.i dont think many people have changed the light system apart from Anna who had a hood made(see big build 3 on this forum) but there has been a few people who have payed extra when ordering there tanks to get 250w bulbs instead of the 150w.
Mark
cheers mark...as im a newbie could you gimme a clue on this one mate please....
if there 2 light fittings on the perc...hows the best way of doing it ? ... a normal white one and a blue one ? (for evening / night time) .. sorry for the lack of proper names for the lights ...
no,you would change both the metal halide bulbs to 250w thats if tank was a 120 there is only the one bulb on a 90
you cannot put a blue bulb into a metal halide unless it was a halide that had blue tubes or bulbes fitted to start with and these lights cost a fortune so what you do is you add your own actinic(blue tube light)there is a couple of ways to do this
1,fit it under the glass sliding shelf that comes with tank-look at stuarts perc120 under this forum or check aquamedic chromis tanks again on this forum.
2 it can be fitted with a reflector running independant but clipped on to metal halide
ps the lighting imo is fine as standard you would only be changing if you were going to keep sps corals or lots of frags but they should be fine imo under the 150s,think you only have to pay the difference on the bulbs so not a big cost.
Mark
cheers mark...
thats totaly lost me mate...could you break it down into simple'ton terms ...please  :(

Update...Sorry for the delay !!!
Now, where was I ??
Oh yes ..Algae bloom
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Algae%202.JPG
Lasted about a week...very frustrating..but cleared up on its own
water has always been very slightly misty...so ran a U/V for 12 hours ...then clear as a whistle
Bought a pair of Percula clowns...very nice looking...more red looking than orange
Took them a couple of days to eat...but now they are very keen...must watch that i dont overfeed
Have now added some Rowaphos just above the sponge...after the skimmer
Will get back with more updates and Pics
Joe
Hi Tabs
in simple terms on a perc tank the standard lighting is fine and doesnt need changed.
in a years time when its time to change the bulbs you can possibly buy 250w bulbs instead of standard 150w if you think you need it and you will also have a years experience behind you.
tanks do not come with actinic(blue lights)unless you buy a unit that has them and they are very expensive so most people fit actinics to the tank separate.if you look at the topics on stuarts perc120 or aquamedic chromis tanks it will tell you how its done with pictures.
HTH
Mark
Hi Mark,
You cant use 250w bulbs on a 150w halide.
John.
I have a perc 90 with std 150 w light , also added a atinic , adds a gread deal of colour to the corals , and after the MH has gone out
oops!
thanks john
thought i had seen somewhere poeple upgrading,so is it only when you buy the tank you can upgrade the lighting and pay the extra for a 250w halide?
just wondering mine has standard 150w
cheers
Mark
Hi Mark,
You can only upgrade them before you buy the tank. You would need to sell your 150w unit and buy a new 250w unit now.
John.
cheers mate
I see what you mean, was getting mixed up.
Mark
Hi Mark,
Or you could stick a 400w light on and 2 T5s like i have :D
John.
c'mon then lads..spill the beans for us newbies..lol
is this the best route to take when buying the perc then ? .. to upgrade to 250w ?
or should i say...what "cant" be kept in the tank using 150w lighting ?
:thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx:
If it were me i would upgrade to a 250w unit when ordering the tank. It is not that much more cash. At least then you can keep anything. It gets expensive otherwise selling lights to keep upgrading, which i know all about.
John.
so could someone please explain about T5 and T8 lighting ...
which is used for what ect...thanks chaps, i bet your all getting fed up with me, go on say it, i dont mind, no one can hear me sobbing from here :(
Hi.
T5s and T8s are flourecent tubes. The T5s are thinner tubes than T8s, so you can fit more in a set space ( inside a hood)
John.
cheers john, now im getting a bit more wiser..lol
so is there any difference in what can be kept with T5 and T8 lighting ..ie, is one better for different species of fish, corals ect ? .. or is it just the size that differs
:thanx:
The T5s should be better than the T8s for output. You can keep soft corals and fish with either. Then it also depends how many tubes you can fit on top of your tank. The more the better. But then its just easier having halides than a mass of tubes.
John.
hi joe mate :D
your tanks looking very much like mine most days, like you've got green glass :P i clean it everyday at the moment just so everyone thinks i look after it :D very frustrating as i keep knocking my snails off with the magnet and my crabs are on like pirahna's
Hi john
so you have a 400w halide and 2 t5s above your perc?
wow thats going to be bright
couple of questions
1,how do you find that?
2,what would be the advantages of that lighting on the perc?
cheers
Mark
oh another lighting question, got my perc 90,transferring 8th jan but it came with ocean light that is same as my chromis, was told thats the lights they are now using on perc90,its the same 150w bulb so do you think i would have any problems with this?was also told it would look neater.any comments guys?
Mark
Hi Mark,
Yes there is a 400w halide + 2 t5s on my perc 90. The reason i put them on is i am transfering a lot of corals from my 6 foot tank to the perc 90. My 6 foot tank has double 400w halides. The only problem is trying to keep the temp down. I have a clip on fan on the tank at the moment, it works but looks awfull. There is a chiller on my 6 foot tank which i will move over when i get rid of the tank.
The light that came with my perc 90 was also the 150w ocean light. There is no difference to the older light unit they used to supply only the ocean light looks better.
John.
Thanks John
was a bit worried but as it was the same wattage thought it should be ok.
do you think i will struggle with keeping acros etc with 150 lighting?i have frags in chromis they seem to be doing ok but not really growing as such, wonder if lighting possibly not bright enough?
anyone know, when they ordered there tank, how much it was to upgrade to the 250 from 150? as mine is still in box i wonder if i speak nicely to LFS.
Cheers

Upgrading to 250w for the 120 2x150 was £80
Only difference i'v been told is slightly quicker growth on the 250's
Plus the electric bill ;)

another lighting question-
while speaking to my LFS today about lighting tmc has a 50k 150w rating bulb on p87 of latest marine world, cant really upgrade my 150 to 250w as you are supposed to do it when you order and its lying in box upstairs atm,its RRP is £58 what do you think i should do?got 3 options
1,buy this bulb
2,sell my new 150w halide and buy another halide
or
3just keep what i have
sorry so many lighting questions lately

Hi Marc
1,buy this bulb
Sorry, dont have the knowledge to answer this one
2,sell my new 150w halide and buy another halide
Would be a big price difference...is it worth the extra cost
3just keep what i have
Cant see any disadvantages of this..apart from slightly slower growth on hard corals
Do you want quicker growth ....considering the size of the 90 ??
If its mainly for fragging then maybe its worth the cost...Plus, dont forget the extra electric !!
Perhaps one of the guys with a 90 can be more helpfull

Thanks Joe
mainly for frags

Hi all
Forgot to tell you !!
Got up christmas eve morning....sitting there with the missus looking at the tank...as you do !!
Out of nowhere, she says..." I think the tank needs to be moved...its not right there "
" WHAT...!!! " I said...then quickly remembering , it took me 2 months to persuade her we needed a Perc 120 rather than the 90 (no offence)....I said " Yes dear ..no prob...Gulp !!!
Sat down again...and started to forward plan, How ??.....As you do !!!
Went to Asda and bought 4 ...I think they are about 20 gall round buckets.....Only £5 each
Now, remembering i have no corals in there yet
Attached a hose to the bottom right hand pump ...and syphoned out 50% of the water
Pulled out the 2 plugs for the extension leads
Syphoned down to about 25 % of water level left
The very SLOWLY...walked it across the other side of the room, and put in position....( Wood flooring )
Then with a bucket...poured the water into the back sump..less stressfull for the fish
Plugged in the 2 plugs.....FINISHED....PHEW !!!
Took just over 1 HOUR....Could not believe how easy it was
Then the bad news !!!
Took over 3 hours to find the joists in the ceiling to fit my piece of wood for the M/H
For some strange reason...the joists decided to change direction !!!...no wonder I couldn't them....and the ceiling looks like its got woodworm
Good job I used a very fine drill bit
Hope you find this of interest !!!!
:D
Joe
Joe / Peachys / any other perc owners,
How long are the cables that are supplied with the percs halide lighting. I am getting a perc 90 shortly but am wondering what to attach the halide cables to (I live in an oldish house with very tall ceilings. Another option is to put a shelf in and suspend the light from that. Whatever I choose also needs to be pleasing to the eye as my wife thinks suspended lights are very 1970's.
Thanks to both of you for the pictures. My wife has gone from ice cold - cool - neutral to possibly even luke warm due to the photographs of silver percs on UR. Please keep posting.
Cheers
Rob
Hi Guichard, With my Silver Perc i have silver arcadia brackets which you drill to the wall, they arch over, very nice, and then the Halide unit hangs of them instead from the ceiling, they are brilliant if you want halides to hang but not from the ceiling.
Martin
Martin,
Cheers for the reply. Have you got a photograph of your brackets installed?

Whatever I choose also needs to be pleasing to the eye as my wife thinks suspended lights are very 1970's
Funny...my wife said exactly the same thing before i bought mine :D
Now its up and running...she says it actually looks very modern, and likes it ??
Can we ever win !!! :D

UPDATE....
Tank is settling down nicely now
Got a slight touch of red algae on the sand...due to lack of flow i think
Purchased an Aquamedic Auto Top up unit
Time to consider a Stream...although i would have prefered to keep the inside of the tank empty
Considered larger circulation pumps...but not sure if it will cure the problem...any thoughts ??

nick
5 litres a day!!! Blimey, I was manually adding either 1.5 or 3l a day before I got my auto top up and never had an issue.
I've just filled my 25l bucket an inch off the top now I have an auto top up just to see how long it will last ;)

Any more thoughts on this one...???
Joe
hi joe
What about a stream in a corner build your rockwork up where its going to go then buy a stream decor rock to hide the pump
nick
Hi Joe,
Why dont you fit a closed loop on it with a large pump.
John..

Scar...John....Thanx for your thoughts
Got me thinking now !!...and thats saying something !!!!!
Joe
My missus said my Tunze 6080 looked "too big" on day one and she has never mentioned it since! It would be very easy to hide in one of those LR covers though....
I think thats the way ill go when i get my stream hide it in the decor rock because ive got the uv pump on the other side until i figure out a better place to put it i did put the pump in the recirculation chamber but i couldnt run it with the prefilter and it kept getting full of crap
nick
hi all
here is a question do any of us perc owners run a uv on their systems if so can you tell me where you have placed the uv unit and also where you have placed the pump or powerhead that runs it? your info will be of much help to me because my powerhead sits in the tank and my 30w uv unit sits on the raster board then returns to the tank i am also going to rig up an ozoniser to the skimmer and then i might discard my uv altogether and just run ozone do any of you run an ozoniser? if so what model did you purchase? and do you run a uv in tandem with it?
:thanx: nick

UPDATE
Hi all
WARNING !!!!!
Got up this morning and noticed that my favorite Percula clown was not swimming with his mate
Looked everywhere for her...even stripped out the rock...no sign
Has he jumped ???...looked in the sump...bio-balls...skimmer compartment...floor...NOTHING !!
Oh well another one of lifes mysteries...
Then later in the day, i noticed that the skimmer was hardly producing any bubbles...
:o Yep!! you got it !!!
Stripped down the pump for the skimmer.....and there she was  :(
For some reason she must have jumped the combs, and got into the skimmer compartment...then sucked into the pump
On hindsight, i have always looked at the combs and thought...Mmmm...I wonder ??
But because this has not happened to anyone esle, I did not really think of it as a big problem
So !!...a WARNING to all...BEWARE !!!!!!
Possible Temporary answer...???

Oh...and as i stripped the rock out...I removed my Kole tang and took him back to the shop...as he started to chase the Algae blennie. May sound cruel..but i do like a tank in perfect harmony...And a bully in the tank i find stressfull...Sorry !!

Bummer about your clown :(
Right decision about the tang though - not at all cruel - cruel would have been leaving him in to bully the others!

The only Mods iv done so far is
1 Put a piece of coarse sponge between the second comb and skimmer, to cut down the water noise slightly....as advised :)
