View Full Version : Dream Tank
Good day to all,
I thought I had better return the favour and post some info on my new tank. In the Christmas of 2002 and after a two week holiday to Atlantis in the Bahama's I set my heart on dream tank.
After keeping marines for near on the last ten years on and off I never had much success and death tank after death tank were built and kept in the houses I lived in as I continually moved home. I now acknolwedge that I needed professional help, (and a note for those who have helped I am eternally grateful).
Anyhow after viewing from afar all of the spectacular tanks in this forum and finally reducing the size of some pictures I thought I would give those who are interested a shufty at my new "death I mean dream tank" and return the favour.
I began designing the tank over twelve months ago and after various phases of planning permission and discussions with the local council I commenced building a new room on the back of the house to accomodate my new tank.
The finished size is 120" x 36" wide x 30" deep.
Anyhow a few piccies to put you in the picture.
Apologies,
it seems my IT skills are not as good as I expected.
However I will continue to try to post a few pictures of the new tank.
Regards
OK getting the general hang of this,
You may even see this picture twice.
The picture above is the room I have built to accomodate the new tank, the hole in the wall is the spot where it is going to live.
The previous photo shows the new filter room. This is the shot you wil view normally, if there is such a thing!!
A couple more, of the filter room and the space where the sump is going to fit, and the base the tank will sit on.
wow mate, that looks like its going to be a great project  keep the info coming, cheers, chris
Ooh - another member for the hole-in-the-wall gang! Love these.
Lots of specs please: tank, filtration, lighting, stocking plan.....

Wow indeed... this has to stop all these hole in the wall tanks are making me seriously jealous.. :D

Thanks for the interest Keith,
The basics are 10 x 3 x 2.5.
sump approx 8 x 1.5 x 1.5 (roughly not measured it, but will do now)
Lighting will be 3 x arcadia series 3 250w metal halides.
Not too sure on the stocking plan, what takes my fancy I suppose, my convict blennies need a bigger tank so there going to be thrown in, lots of crabs, starfish, shrimps etc, and hopefully I plan to have a few hard corals knocking about.
Another picture taken in October
This is the sump prior to being lowered into the "sump hole"

Hi Mark,
Yes five hairy bottomed hefty lumps to lift and lower it in....
I stood on the side lines urging the boys on near pooing my pants.
Quite funny on reflection

The opening hole was approx 4ft I think!!!!
I wanted to have good access at the front of the tank so if I needed to squeeze in I could do so without ripping my little arms off... I needed this cause I wanted the weir in the centre giving an all round view of the reef so to speak.

Hi Chris,
Manchester isn't that far away and you will be made more than welcome.
Thanks for the interest.
Heres a couple of the project a little further on, I have had the wall at the back painted in a sea like fashion... hopefully when its done you should be able to see a little bit of sea depth in the rear...
Please ignore the wobbly light shade
This photo were taken in early November, the tank has been running for the last six weeks and is now ready for some cleaners, so needless to say looking forward to the weekend.
Looks terrific and i love the art work at the back.. congrats and keep up the hard work best of luck.. Regards..N

Hi Mark,
No artist mate or builder, never been able to knock a nail in or paint by numbers.
My mate Dave the tank builder gave me the contact of a Murial artist and it sort of went from there.
Glad you liked it.
Ian
Tank with the pipework and the weir designed right in the center of the tank.
Here's another one you can see the Protein Skimmer at the end, its twice the size of me ha ha.
No way I thought I'd managed to escape any photos, I was working under the impression that with my devastating good looks that it might destract peoples attention away from the true reason for the pics, ie. the tank :P :P
Hows my mate Bentley? You gotta post a pic of him
love the artwork, cant wait to see it with the lights on. must give a real sense of depth (if thats the correct expression).
are you going to cover the centre weir with blue acrylic so it blends in with the back ground?

Hi Big Cat, Is your stand just the wall shown in your pic below with a sheet of plyboard and if it is does it take the weight ok as I could build one like it for my 8 x 3 x 2.5.
Thanks and keep the pics comeing, Mine might be 2ft shorter but yours should give me some good idears.

Hi Craig,
The idea is to cover the center weir with live rock on all four sides so as to give a whole round the tank view and a different aspect at the back of the tank.
I have also been frustrated to spend hundreds of pounds on fish and starfish only to see them knob off to the rear of the tank and never to be seen again.
I have a pistol shrimp, lovely he is, but I see him once every three months. Not good enough.
Therefore the objective was to be able to hunt the blighters down by viewing from the filter room.
Hopefully the plan my mate will come together....eventually

Hi Mark,
Yes you are right. The tank sits on a 18mm plywood sheet (one piece 10ft long) which sits on the concrete brick (not normal brick).
My bricklayer said the wall would take the weight of an elephant and touch wood as yet I have had no problems, although I have also not had any calcs done to prove his theory....
If he is wrong though, then I am in big trouble mate.

Hi Fishgirl,
Thanks for the nice comments, Yes Atlantis it was that did it for me.
After coming back I searched every thought I had to see if I could build an enourmous tank, in the garage, the shed all over the gaff.
I decided in the end to move house but that fell through so i built a room on the back and realistically the 10footer was all that was affordable and allowable by the wife... :
I thought atlantis was superb they really looked after us for two weeks and cause it was quite empty and we had a little one they upgraded us to a nice bungalow room where we stepped out onto the balcony and then straight onto the stingray pool.
The baby Manta was still there although from memory I think they told us he had a 27ft wing span so some baby. It was wonderful to see him feeding and to see all the other fish.
I also scuba dive but they wouldn't let me in the shark tank although they siad a year or two before this was the norm for experienced divers, they used to let them in the shark tank to clean the glass.
When we there they also had two nice big Hammerheads, I would recommend everyone to go and see the gaff at least once.....and remember to take loads of money.
I will try to post some more pics of the tank shortly, just placed my first batch of crabs in it this week.
Take care
Ian
Here is a few more photos with some of the live rock added

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the nice comments, really is appreciated, progress will now be slow though as although the tank is up and running (late Nov 04) I have only just added the start of my cleaners (10 hermits) last weekend.
I need to be a bit patient now and then hopefully gradually add the stuff I want.
I have an exisiting 5 x 2 x 1.5 tank with some nice blennies, shrimps etc so the plan is to transfer the stuff to the new tank in due course.
I shall if requested of course keep all who would like to be informed.
Regards
Ian

Oh and the Aquascaping was mainly done by Aqua world and in particular Andrew Caine who it must be said DID NOT LOOK like the fine figure of a man whilst in the tank.
Grateful to him though.
:thanx: Andrew.
The remainder of the rock is going to go in gradually, but it is near enough completed from a front view, its just the back of the weir now which is blank.
if you decide to go down the sps route you'll have to hollow out nelsons coloumn to use as a calcium reactor!

Now Bruvva,
I have no problem answering this as the wife doesnt read this site only I am not allowed to drink a stiff one whilst in work however,
The budget to have all the bells and toggles, Skimmer, Rhowaphos Reactor, pumps, auto top up, calcium reator, kalkwasser, tank, sump, 300kg of live rock, chiller etc, probably best part of approx. £14k.
But then to add to this was the building work cause I had to build a new room on the house to accomodate, £10k, electrics plumbing joinery £8, new telly £2k, (optional of course) then there was the decorating and art work £500 so probably without a fish, crab, coral the outlay would be about £35k.
So hopefully my little fishes should be really grateful and not snuff it on me..... :D
new telly £2k,
Do I spy a Panasonic subwoofer in one of your pics?
Thinking of getting a system for my living room.
Ian
£35K
you know it make sense!
:o
never mind fish snuffing it, i would chage them rent!
cant wait to see this in a year or two it'll give the yanks a run for their money

Yes Ian,
correct mate a Panasonic Sub surround built into the walls just to ease the stress on the fish of course.
I had the sharp 250w one first but when I connected it it was not all that so I went back to my good mate in the elecrtical shop and upgraded to a 500w which nicely scares the children from the living room.
Moral dont go for less than 500watts. Expectto pay no more than about £225 - £250.

It can attain speeds of up to 125mph, boasts 15 inch front and rear suspension and a 110bp fuel injected engine. It's even environmentally friendly, emitting 95% less carbon monoxide than the closest competitor. So what's the catch? Well, you do need a spare £8000 in your pocket before you can lay hands on it.

Form following function, race bred design and truly uncompromised performance. This is the Atom. Minimal bodywork, moulded to the highest standards possible, consisting of separate composite panels reduces weight, minimises costs and allows easy access for adjustment of most settings. Developed in the wind tunnel to generate front and rear downforce, with special attention paid to underbody air flow, the bodywork provides stability and precise steering at all speeds.
With its wide track the Atom can accomodate 2 large adults in safety, comfortably solving the space problems usually found in vehicles of this class. The composite twin seat unit, deisgned to be set up for the driver, offers high lateral support and a comfortable driving position.
On the dash housed in a minimal console the compact racing instruments feature stepper motor driven needles with clear, white on black, easy to read faces, LCD readouts for secondary information and all legally required warning lights for road use. A remote, keyless immobiliser allows for an ignition on/kill switch and starter button, ergonomically grouped together with other controls around the steering wheel.
The suspension used in the Atom is unique on a road car and has been derived from current single seat race cars. The suspension is by double unequal length wishbones and inboard, pushrod operated dampers, front and rear. The system features outboard rod ends all round for total adjustability and inboard rubber/metal bushes for compliance and comfort. Coil over dampers front and rear extend the adjustability of the car allowing the Atom to be quickly set up for road or track use or to individual preferences.
The Atom has been designed to be used on the road or the track. Race derived features include adjustable front/rear bias brakes with the option of remote operation while driving, twin brake master cylinders, hydraulic clutch, one and a half turn competition steering rack, adjustable allow pedals and ram air system. It is this thought for detail and lack of compromise that makes the Atom so totally unique.
Even in the standard 1.8 form the Atom’s power to weight ratio exceeds that of a 911 Porsche. The Atom power is from the Rover K Series as used in the MGF and Lotus Elise. Proven in road and competition use the engine and gearbox combines reliability and tuning options with economic servicing and practial ownership. With the performance emphasis of the Atom geared towards acceleration and handling, the power to weight ratio even in standard form exceeds that of most sports cars. In tuned form, capable of giving up to up to 500 bhp/tonne, the Atom approaches the levels of pure racing cars.

The La Z Boy Cool Chair (formerly the Oasis) is the ultimate in luxury for every lazy boy couch potato.
Your poor man - look at the way he expends himself every weekend. Between trips to the bathroom, trips to the fridge, and those annoying phone calls to order the pizza, he hardly caught the full match last Sunday. This horrible injustice must stop.
The La-Z-Boy Cool Chair comes equipped with every feature you could ever dream of while shifting and fidgeting in a regular chair. Once you've used this chair, you'll never want to move again. Under one arm there is a 10 motor heated massage controller, and a built-in telephone; and under the other arm is a thermo-electric cooler large enough to hold your beers. Need we say more!!
This huge leather sofa has a fridge in one arm for your tinnies, and a phone in the other arm. The only time you'll have to get up is to go to the little boys room after your 5th can kicks in. To top it all off, it even has a back massager and heater built in, and was used in Joey and Chandler's flat in the US Sitcom 'Friends'. The best of the best at the best price too!
Please note deliveries may take slightly longer (approximately 3-6 weeks) due to the size of the La Z Boy, and delivery is only available to customers in the UK.

Even the most athletic among us quickly tire of the constant leg kicking that's an intrinsic part of the activity they're all calling swimming. Now you can dispense with strenuous limb movement as you glide gracefully through man’s last unexplored frontier, discovering new species and crowning yourself the world’s premier aquatic pioneer into the bargain.
The Sea Scooter weighs in at a paltry 5Kgs, so it’s eminently totable and comes with its very own fetching holdall. The Scooter runs for 1 hour from an overnight charge, which makes it useless for evading dogged customs officials, but perfect for underwater exploration and scaring unsuspecting swimmers witless on your summer hols.

Looks great with the rock in. It's hard to see just how big it is now. When you start stocking with fish we'll see how tiny they look!
Great job,
Mark.
thats HUGH! gona look wicked when its finished. but the getting ready stage must be enjoying, seeing the different stages of the build.

Thanks Matt,
I will add a couple of new photos, the tank has only just commenced with about 20 odd crabs, a few emeralds and a starfish, we now play hunt the crab......
The tank just eats live rock and I mean eats it...

Hi Matt,
It has been enjoyable watching the build, but it has taken some time.
I started the groundworks for the new room on the 28th March 2004 would you believe and we are nearly into February so I have had to be a bit patient (which usually isn't my strongest point bud) however I digress, it is now getting to the time where I want to see flying elephants and such roaming round the tank eating algae and wagging their tales when they see me...
Hopefully not to long to go now....
   I was thinking, all you need now is a herd of wilde-beast behind the tank or zebras wallowing in your sump, and hey presto, you really really would be there

how much live rock was used in the end.....and did a train deliver it!

One word. Awesome. I love the rock work.

:o
At the moment there has been added approx 293kg of live rock - (not a kg more or a kg less.)
However and here is the bug bear, only the front of the weir and the sides of the tank have been fully rocked.
the back of the tank is blank and somewhat void and the sides of the weir have been built at present so that they look fully rocked but if you look closely they are not YET!
I have approx. 90kg in my existing tank which I am going to transfer shortly but I fear another 100kg will be needed to finish the all around view.
So my final estimate will be around 450 - 480 kg of live rockl when fully completed.

does that mean it will act similar to an undergravel and require syphoning?
yep , took mine out in the end , did my head in.
mark
Hmm, different I guess. :) Not seen one before.
Mark.
does that mean it will act similar to an undergravel and require syphoning?
Not as such, as the pre filter (floss) should tke 95% of the particles out before it gets to the gravel. Periodicly you will have to stir it to release any air bubbles or any detritus that has got passed the floss. Also, there is 26,000LPH going through it so theres a tad more flow than an undergravel ;)
ste :D
The same type of system is used on the front window tank at the shop and in all honesty it has required very little if any maintenance in the 4 or so years it's been running.
Must admit I would have liked to have used a mud based setup but the final decision ain't down to me.... :D :P
 its amazing what you can do with a few quid  excellent tank mate, cant wait to see it filled with fish and corals  good on ya

Hi Fish Girl,
Super snails, yes I concur with everything you say about them, they move faster then me going for me dinner.
My mate told me that they munch on clams though, but as I haven't got any they are not a problem, maybe someone may be able to shed light on the theory and prevent me wasting thirty notes.
Here are a few updates with the new or old stock from my old tank.
The tank is still not fully rocked up yet but the front view is just about sorted but I now need to build up the sides and the back of the weir (which i haven't showed you yet) mainly because there is nothing yet to see. ;)
The convict blennies were just enourmous, when we got them out of the old tank into a bucket the two of them were at least a foot long, the battery on the camera wasn't charged so missed the chance to photo the whole length of them, I mean how big do these creatures grow.....don't have make a mess though see the photo below and you will see what i mean
Hopefully my aiptasia eater!!!
Last one for now....enjoy.
OK I just cant help myself, here is the pride and joy.....when we had moved everything from the old tank the only creatures we were missing was a teddy bear crab and my mate the pistol shrimp.
Now after being distraught for an hour I was beginning to move on in life when I looked at a piece of ocean rock that was about to be thrown out and low and behold there he was the little fella, stuck nicely into a little crevice.
Now we only used to see this little guy once a month in the old tank and he has taken nicely to one of my little home made caves at the front and we have seen him twice a day since, but we are only talking about three days so am trying not get too excited.
Anyhow for any pistol lovers out there heres mine.

Hi Scoob,
The rockwork is staying put for the moment cause I think no one or thing as yet has tried to disturb it.
The wings or sides were very large pieces of show rock which was specially ordered.
The center is just a pile of rubble plonked at various litlle angles and as yet it has stayed in place or I have been lucky. The column is the weir in the center and there is the same amount of space at the back of the tank that you cannot see unless you go into the filter room at the back. Once I have completed the rockwork at the back I will again post a few piccies, so in answer to your question mate, yes no ties, cables, milliput etc....
I can just see it now all ending in tears - mine ha ha...wont be the first time.
Thanks for the kind words.

Your tank is looking great Big Cat, how jealous am I?
As for those snails, my mate got some, and then about a week later he put a small clam in. It took a few days for a snail to find it but one morning my friend came down to find a snail polishing off his clam breakfast.
Regards
Sean

Yes Prawn, its a stupid question.
He is in his main tank, which is under my main tank attached as part of my sump.
Talking of sumps, has anyone any suggestions as regard to my little problem of keeping my candystripe in my main tank as five times now he has been whisked over the weir and ended up in the sump.
If he contiunues he will have to go back to the little shop on the prairie or become the snowflake's dinner....

Hi Mode,
Glad it has provided you with some light reading....
I have still to add my kalkwasser, eco-aqualisers, connect my chiller and add my tunze's but all in all progress is being made.
I intend to provide all specs when this is done but now you've asked I may stick something together for you over the next couple of weeks.
I am astounded at the responses I have add and may I say to you all they are all very appreciated. :thanx:
I just look at some of the tremendous tanks and I see just wonderful aquariums and wonder if mine ends up being half as good then I shall be a happy little camper.
I just need to try and tackle the objective of keeping them all alive......
On that note again it couldn't have been done without the help and advice and hard work of all the boys at Aquaworld and the builders who built the whole thing.
Les, Mark, Dave, Graham I could go on and on, many thanks to all, have to go now before I start to cry!
Regards
Ian

Hi Big Cat,
Just flicking through the "member's tanks" bit and stumbled across your tank - stumble is the right work cos I am amazed - its huuuuuuge
Good on you mate cracking job you've done
One question as I'm building a stand for my humble 5x2x2x tank as mentioned before:
[QUOTE]
Hi Big Cat, Is your stand just the wall shown in your pic below with a sheet of plyboard and if it is does it take the weight ok as I could build one like it for my 8 x 3 x 2.5.
I'm going to use breeze blocks - the sort of grey high density blocks you can buy anywhere - are these the same concrete blocks you've used?
And any advice you can give would be great ;)
Cheers mate and keep up the dreams that the rest of us aspire to :D
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, my bricklayer has told me that they were solid brick and solid concrete block.
As basic and as simple as that.
You will see where the other normal block has been used but on top the bricks that look white are solid concrete.
What I do know is that once it was built, we had to make a minor alteration for the skimmer which mean't knocking a hold out at the end of the tank where the skimmer is located and it took a whole load of effort to remove just the one so when they set bud they really set hard.
Let me know how you get on.
Regards
Ian

OK Sump room just for you bud.
Measurements 16' x 5' filled with the 10' x 3' wide goldfish bowl.
Small sink located at one end, with outside tap plumbed above for the RO unit which disperses the non RO water straight down the overflow. (this is only a temporary measuere until i complete the water butts outside which will hold the excess that is going to be used on my garden and for the summer hanging baskets.
Electrics approx. a dozen sockets each located vertically down the side of each end of the tank. Skimmer, Chiller, and door into rear garden. Door the other end leads straight into the garage which holds my water change 90 gallon tank and a second RO unit.
That should have said 15ft long not 16....
Another one of the electrics... well you did ask for it.
The above shot shows the other end of the sump and the flow compartments, if you look closely you will see my little snowflake moray poking his nose out.
This is the tank I am using for my water change, half full the full 90 gallon going in this weekend.
And last one for those starfish lovers, heres my basket starfish.
