Pistol Id?

Through a peculiar route.. I have just picked this fella up.. it was heading towards being a snack for a trigger... when I said I would have it for my refugium....

Is it a pistol... and how wise an idea is it to go into an acrylic refugium... ?

quite cross as I never do impulse purchases... although I didnt pay for this lad so perhaps its not a purchase. but its still impulse!!!

definitely a pistol (Alpheus sp.), but don't know which one !....

How big is it ?

There must be a goby out there somewhere just dying for a mate like that !

Nice pistol, not sure of the species but looks like one of the free living ones as opposed to a goby symbiont... I'll look it up in my book tonight.

I have a very similiar pistol to this he's pinkish with blue legs I inherited him from my friend Anna who was a bit worried about him in her main tank so I have him in the sump and he is fine I feed him every so often the only thing is he's dug up all the sand in the sump and tossed a lot of it into the area where the pumps etc are :lol: but he is cool to watch I think it would be fine in your refugium if you don't mind a bit of digging and you don't have a heart attack everytime he makes the 'pistol shot' noise cause boy it's LOUD!!

not a threat to a tank in the same way as a mantis - as mentioned, will probably stir the sand up a lot though - might kill amphipods, smaller shrimps....

cheers guys... and good to see that we are in the new ID section!!!

It will go into the refugium where it can munch on the pods... am sure it cant kill em all... theres a decent amount of substrate in there that it can keep stirred!!
