View Full Version : Crab Id
Can anyone ID this (dead) crab. It's the only time I've been able to get a close up pic.
Some sort of hermit crab.. ... almost certainly a molt!
e
that dont look like a dead crab, maybe a dead hermit or the skin of a sheading hermit?have you any blue legs?
Sorry, maybe I wasn't too clear.
It is a hermit crab, but what type. I have about 10 of them, no other type. The claws are red.
The reason i didn't think it was a molt is because if you look at about 2'0 clock in the pic there looks to be flesh.
Anyway, it's the type of hermit I'm after - was bought as red leg!
Yeah its quite common to see different morphs.. I had one identical to yours... no idea on name...
When they molt they look fleshy!
E
Very difficult to ID with that picture, do you have a clearer one? Especially showing it's craw and eye stalk?
It looks like a molt to me :) If you have good calcium + iodine level in your tank, hermit molts look fleshy (good).
From the patter, here's my few guesses:
Most likely Clibanarius tricolor

or... Clibanarius corallinus?

Unlikely candidates, but just in case... If you DO have any one of these, would you be interested in sell or trade? as I'm a huge hermit fan (not their attitudfe mind you...)
Calcinus argus

Clibanarius sp?

Looks a lot like Dardanus megistos - how big is it? If I'm right that's gonna be a mother of a crab
Just normal Hermit size, got about 10 of them.
That's the best pic I've been able to get in ages. The claws are red and the antenna is red aswell. The rest is sort of red with lots of blue spots on.
Calcinus argus (3rd crb in photos above)
Common name anybody?
Not that I know of.. never see these int eh UK at all.
UK importers are useless when it comes to nice inverts that's not bread and butter.
I bought them online as red legs.
This might be the fella:
