probably like most reasons people dont setup huge tanks.....cost, bigger the tank, the more live rock you need, bigger circulation pumps needed, higher wattage lights needed to penetrate the depth of water, more salt needed, higher leccy bills etc etc
......maintainance will also be a lot easier with access to all three sides.
it can be hard work when only one side of the tank is accessable!
something i have found!
great looking tank jamie will be kicking him self when you have it stocked
thanks for your remarks on my new set up i just hope i can manage this bigger set up as iam really looking forward to starting.
now i have the tank where i want it and has been cleaned iam now looking to buy some equipment.
i will let you all know when iam ready to start this so if anyone has any thoughts to my new set up i would really appriciate there ideas.
thanks fran
Can I suggest that you move those plug sockets above the sump.
ive just put them where jamie had them but are you saying this as sump could overflow or something to this affect
I think he just means you could easily splash or spill water on them if you are doing any work in your sump (cleaning skimmer etc)
John
ok i will probably move them up before i add water to tank thanks for that

Hi Fran
Or you could be perfect like me and not spill water all over the place :D Fran you could put all the electrics in the right hand side cupboard this way you shouldnt get any water on the sockets mate.....#
cheers Jamie
Fran
Nice looking tank
Are you going to turn the sump around?
That section on the right is to take the overflow from the tank, and the section on the left for the return pump. Of course, I cannot see where the return pump piping is going to go, but that way around could clutter up the space in the sump / cabinet area ?
Phil
yes i just put it in the wrong way when i first done this it has been turned round
iam just waiting for equipment i.e skimmer and tunze stream then i will be looking to start.
iam picking up my deltec apf600 and tunze 6100 single controler + light sener.
then maybe on the weekend i will start to fill with r/o water.
some pics of equipment bought today.

You've got a fun weekend ahead of you then :D
Ian.
yes iam going to re/connect the sump pipe with straight connector this has a tap on it.
then iam thinking of setting skimmer up in sump and connecting tunze stream.
iam not to sure what to go for as sand bed what people view on what i should use and how high this should be.
also would it be a good idea to use egg crates as i have some.
once skimmer and tunze have been put in place can i add r/o water to tank and salt whats your view on this.
as for next move i was thinking of adding first about 40/50 live rock.
fitted pipe back on but i will have to get some solvent does anyone know what this is called.

13-09-05, 19:54
Hi Fran
Have you fixed that pipe yet mate,as I had it feeding into the baffel(2" compartment on the left hand side of the sump mate.....Oh Fran did you get that OR3500 fired up that someone sold you on the board or have you arrange to get your money back mate.....
cheers Jamie
yes pipe has been fitted correct i think and looks like what you said and now i can see how easy it was thanks.
also ive spoken to seller of o/r3500 and iam going to send this back to him but he said he will have alook at it to see if he can get it to work and if he can he will send it back but if no luck then a refund which i think this is fair.
thanks fran
should be up and running soon fran
the or3500 is now working and on its way back to fran again it was a mistake of my own when i put it back together i put the end caps to the impellor in the wrong place so it was sticking to the wall of the pump when it should of spun
sorry for any holdups fran
all the best darryl
ok thats no problem at least we were able to sort this out.
look forward to pump arriving

Make sure you keep the pics coming - we want to see this take shape!
Ian. :D
well the stage iam at now
add coral sand with some egg crates in the middle of tank and now adding r/o water which will take a few days as my mrs wont let me have r/o unit running when we are in bed so it will take a bit longer.
well once ive added water and sorted some live rock out i will salt r/o water a couple of days before live rock goes in
iam thinking maybe 30/40kg to start me off.
anyone got any views on this or if iam doing anything wrong at the moment.
here is the latest pic just added some r/o water 5 mins ago
so iam hoping to get some live rock early next week and then will start to look at light unit
iam not to sure what lights to go for at first as iam only going to keep softies for maybe a year or two to gain to experience any thoughts on lighting and price second hand or new
thanks fran
Looking good Fran, keep the pics coming.

what size is your tank? 4 or 5 foot? i would go for a pendant 2x250 watt unit, that way you dont need to worry about having to upgrade the lights if you want to keep hard corals later down the line
iam just a bit concerned about the running cost of them compared to 150s
also what price could i pick 250s up for any ideas
my tank is 5x2x2 with sump
thanks fran
you would only be running another 200 watts more, compared to the twin 150's so only adding another 2.4kw of running each day (taken as halides on for 12 hours) which is about 20 pence a day more than the twin 150's (around a fiver a month more?), of course you could run the lights for a shorter photoperiod
my leccy supplier charges 8.248p per kilowatt hour (VAT included)
ok cheers for that i might consider 250s but what price could i pick them up for second hand
thanks fran

depends on make and model really, best bet is to look through the equiptment section over the past few months to get an idea of the going rate that the lights are going for, wont be cheap though
well first i will be looking for some live rock say 30/40kg to start with then clean up crew then halides
iam still waiting on someone to let me know about live rock as he is working away at the moment.
thanks fran

fran i would have put the tunze at the opposite end to your returnGordon
r/o water filled 3/4 nearly in main tank
i will be ready to add salt very soon
this is where i have my controler
ive managed to replace letterbox glass and is now all sealed in.
ive just been out to buy some bits and pieces for tank
hydor 400w heater
25kg reef crystals
136ltrs water butt and stand
aquarium minder with buily in digital thermometer
i hope to get my ocean runner back in a couple of days so what i intend to do is add more r/o water until its about 1" above ocean runner then start it up for about 1/2 days then add salt to salinity 1.024 or near to this.
then add my 400w heater into the sump.
wait for this to get up to temp and add about 30/40kg live rock
so at present iam looking for about 30/40kg living rock near hampshire.
thanks fran
tank has now been filled and o/r 3500 fitted so tank has now been running into sump and returning back to main tank for about 3 hours now.
iam going to leave this for a few days just to make sure there is no problems before i salt tank.
then iam going to add about 30/50kg living rock.
any views on this so far

Looking good there, Fran.
Good plan to check out the operation of the tank/sump before you start adding anything else. Have you had any thoughts on how you want to aquascape it? And even more fun - had any thoughts on what livestock you're gonna put in there?
Ian.
at the moment i have no idea what iam going to have as to livestock
what i have learnt is to stay well away from damsels.
what is certain iam going to stay with soft corals for a year or two before i move onto sps and may even just stay with soft corals.
regards to aquascape just stand on large chair and try not to fall in
thanks fran
Now that look like the start of a really great setup and the wife has got a nice piece of good look'in furniture, fair all round or what.
thanks for your comments on the look of the tank
now all the hard work starts
iam going to add salt to tank in a couple of days then some live rock about 30/50kg then clean up crew a couple of weeks later.
:thanx: fran

Most recommendations are for sticking your LR in before your substrate . That way the LR is not gonna move if the substrate shifts about coz of some crazy fish/invert digging away. What you don't want is a piece of LR at the bottom of a pile to move and the rest fall over.
So, best bet is probably to "wipe" the substrate out of the way when positioning the bottom pieces of LR. Get it rock solid (ha ha) and push your substrate back when you are happy.
FYI I have bought LR from Tropical Paradise in Eastleigh. It is good stuff, well cleaned and cured, and not too badly priced.
Best, John
PS What is the diameter of the overflow pipe? Is it big enough? I would def suggest you get it all working and make sure you are happy with the flow before sticking the LR in. I know it might cause a delay but if you don't sort the flow rate up front before you fill the tank you will never be happy with it.
thanks for the info on substrate i think i will do that as i dont want all my good work to be destroyed over night.
regards to sump pipe its 40mm and tank has already started as i got my o/r 3500 this afternoon so i started tank at about 5.30pm tonight.
at the moment water is going down the overflow pipe into the sump tank and returning back to the main tank via o/r 3500.
i know i will have to empty water when i put salt in and live rock and hope to get some live rock soon.
now that ive started tank i feel that the project is now moving and i feel much better now :D
any views on this would be appriciated
thanks fran

there will be no problem with your live rock fran as your standing it on eggcrate not substrate and as you know dont worry about your overflow diameter of your overflow as jamie ran it the same as you are getting there think about your lights before livestock Gordon

Hi Fran
Tanks looking good there mate,Fran the tank will be fine the way you have set it up,OR3500 is what I ran on it and the pump that I recommended to run on my old set up,it ran for 15 months with the OR3500 return with no problems with the overflow or the pump,I had excellent water quality with this method for the whole time that it was set up,so do worry about a thing mate.
Fran as Goo has already said its time to think about some lighting for the set up,Fran you are doing everything right mate.....
Cheers Jamie
thanks for you kind comments jamie and thanks to gordon for all your advice
iam in the process of looking for about 30/50kg live rock then iam going to look for some lights.
thanks again to jamie and gordon for all your help

ive salted tank up to a salinity 1.025 and started apf600
added 40kg living rock
sorry about pic its not very good
i will post some more pics as soon as i have my halides
iam still looking for arcadia 3 series 2 x 150s
so if anyone knows of any going fairly cheap could you let me know please.
:thanx: fran
just ordered my arcadia 3 series 2 x 150watt 2 x atinics 110cm in silver
this should arrive tomorrow evening so i will post a pic after.
iam just a bit concerned about this star fish that ive found last night as to what i should do.
Hi Fran, It looks like you’re off to a good start. I’m glad to see the caulerpa made it in one piece, is it growing?
If the starfish is small with different size arms then no need to worry I have hundreds of them and they haven’t been a problem they are good algae eaters.
thanks for the live rock very good condition and iam not to sure if its growing.
it looks like its started to grow as it has some brown patches on the coral sand.
ive orderd my lights and hope they arrive today so they can be added.
i ordered arcadia 3 series 2 x 150watt 2 x atinics 110cm in silver.
just a quick question how far from the water should the lights be fitted and regards to star fish how long can he survive without any food or does he feed off the rock and water.
thanks fran
my new lights
arcadia 3 series 2 x 150w 2 x 30w 110cm silver pendant digital timers
bought from fast light limited
i orderded this light yesterday mid day and this arrived this evening so iam very pleased with light and service.
thanks rob for this very good service and very nice looking lights
and another view of lights and some questions on them if someone can help me.
as you can see these lights have just been delivered so i need to rig them up.
1st question is it a must that i find the joist in the ceiling
2nd if not what should i use to suspend lights
3rd black cable needs to be wired into electrics should it be done in the ceiling or can this be wired into a plug socket so the black cable runs down behind the tank.
i would appriciate any views on this please.
and a very big thank you to rob at fast light for this very good service
:thanx: fran
Is that going to be a DSB in the sump, and What are the Red Patches on the Sand
Regards Steve
You will need to wire the lamp to a fused Spur as recomended in the Instructions, and you will definatly need to find a joist, lift the unit up and think................
Would you be happy hanging that from a piece of plaster board ;)
Regards Steve
I strongly advise that you rig the suspension wire to a joist (these units are heavy), i had to lift bedroom floorboards to do this successfully, you can buy proper brackets to hang the unit from which fix to the wall but personally i think it is neater suspended from ceiling. I am not an electrician so i followed instructions and wired black cable into the mains circuit on a seperate switch, i know some people have put a plug on them and simply plugged them in but not sure on the dangers of this.
not to sure about sand bed i may remove some and iam not to sure about brown patches.
well iam going to get an electrician to fit this for me so i know the job will be done right.
the good thing is that we are in the process of decorating the bedroom and the carpet has been pulled up already and this is where the tank is unerneath so he will be able to pull the floorboards up straight away without messing about.
once this is up i will post a proper pic
just a quick question tho does anyone know of an electrician that could do this for me a.s.a.p or just someone that has done this before.
:thanx: fran
just a few pics of lights and tank now they are up and running

just done my first test on water and results as follows.
ammonia 0.50
nitrite 0.25
nitrate 5.0
calcium 380
phosphat 1.0
kh 11
p.h 8.2
and thanks to fire fish ive also added some more caulerpa and some cheato to sump tank.
iam a bit bored so just another pic
and my first test on water parameters today
ammonia 0.50
nitrite 0.25
nitrate 5.0
calcium 380
phosphat 1.0 (hoping to get phosban reactor soon)
kh 11
p.h 8.2
i will be adding a clean up crew very soon so any advice as to what to add.
and any views on water parameters.
Looks like the tank is cycling.
I would sort phosphate out aswell, 1.0 is quite high.
fran phosphates high why dont you try what i said, dont think of adding clean up crew until you get that ammonia and nitrite down to zero for at least 2 weeks Gordon
iam not going to add anything to this set up until all readings are correct.
iam just thinking ahead as to what type of clean up crew to add.
i was thinking of maybe 10 x red leg hermits,10x turbo snails,2 x cleaner shrimps,2 x fire shrimps.

There is nothing to deplete Calcium from the water that regular water changes cannot manage for you
Focus on getting the Ammonia and Phosphates down to zero

Macro algae is pretty good, your tang should enjoy eating it!

sorry phil i had to pick some rock up yesterday it was to much of a good deal to turn down sorry about meeting i did ask keith to let you know that i could`nt make it.
Great!
Keith did mention to me last night that you were not able to come (no critisism of Keith at all here) - after I'd brought all the food <_< - I'm sure the rock would have still been there tonight - consider letting the host know in future - they're the ones spending their hard earned on food and drink to host the meeting
sorry if i have upset you phil its just this offer came up and this had to be picked up yesterday and i have not got your number so i thought the only thing i can do is phone another member and let them know that i could`nt make it.
sorry fran

Look Fran - You're telling Phil you didn't turn up to the meeting, and you didn't let him know, becuase you saved a few quid on some LR, but he catered for you, spending his money on food and drink - sometimes you need to consider more than just saving a few £ - if you want to remain in the group - you need to be more considerate - of course, there are always work instances or family emergencies that mean you cannot attend at the last minute - but to save a few £ on some LR is a kick in the teeth - I consider!
If it was my meeting, I would be well pissed

That looks great Fran much more natural looking. Did you leave the eggcrate and racking out? How about some pics from some different angles, do the star polips and mushie look like they made it?

mmmmm. have to agree there with Si and sympathise with Phil to be honest. Trying to save a few quid is what we all do. but it shouldnt be at the expence of a fellow club member Fran. As i undestand it you made a verbal agreement with Phil for some rock. and not only backed out without consideration for the fact he was saving it for you despite other offers, but you also left it till the last minuit to pull out of a meet that he had paid out of his own pocket for, to lay food on.
Sounds to me like Phil was done over twice on this one.
Not very good conduct IMO for a fellow reefer and club member.
i trust you will make things right with Phil.
Its up to Keith to be honest, But I would prefer this type of behavour was discoraged from the club to be honest.
The rest can go to PM, or into the Club section.

hi fran i see your still learning cheap rock comes round regular good friends dont these lads will help you if you dont upset them just for a few quid Gordon
had a trip to stm today for the first time and found this to be a very nice shop bit on the price side but very nice and nice staff.
i bought 4 soft corals from there
here is a few pics not that good tho as i will post a few more in the week.
i think this is a gonapora
think this one is fungia plate coral
i think this is a colt coral but i cant be certain on any of the names i have listed.
i will have to wait until they are fully settled to id them proper.
i also went to world of fishes in east grinstead and bought 2 peppermints sand sifting star fish blue star fish and i could`nt resist a coral beauty but again i will have to wait to get a pic of him as he seems a little shy at the moment.
good day all round tho
Your tank has come along REALLY well! Looks amazing.
so what were the 4 soft corals ?
here is a better one now its open
new addition of coral beauty
this is how it looks right now from a full spec so iam going to concentrate on some more soft corals and maybe a couple of nice fish as well.
also ive been thinking about adding another tunze stream to the system so what do people think about this.
also just a quick question since ive added another 40kg live rock to tank the evaporation of the water does`nt seem as much anymore is this normall as when i only had 40kg i was toping up much more than now.
How much flow do you have in there at the moment, what turnover etc? More flow is mainly down to your preference.
When you added more rock did it take away rippling on the waters surface? This could slow evaporation.
Take is looking really nice!
thanks mate
well for circulation iam just running one tunze stream 6100 and a eheim return pump so iam not sure if i should add another tunze stream or just a couple of maxijets.
regards to live rock iam not sure really i think its made more of a ripple on the surface.
Hi Fran. If i were you i would put another 6100 in you will see the difference in the corals they will love the extra flow. Tanks looking good now well done. HTH. Eric.
looking good fran,well done.

Hi Fran
The tank is looking good, hows your nitrates in the tank,I would slow down with the stock if I were you, this will let the tank mature.
As I said thou tank is looking good mate keep up the hard work,Im thinking now why I sold it  No mate only kidding happy its gone to a good home.
cheers Jamie
yes iam going to slow down on adding fish but iam going to add some more clean up very soon so iam just going to sit and watch the other fish/corals grow a little before i add anymore fish.
iam thinking of adding some more hermits and cleaner shrimps as well as nussurius snails and maybe a counch but iam not to sure about this.
You should steal steves idea for the lettuce clip, remove the sucker and tie some thick fishing line to the sucker and the other end to the clip.
Means you can refill without getting hands wet :-]
thought i show a few more pics as i had camera out
looking good fran come a long way since your juwel tank keep up the good work
how about another full tank shot now things have settled

:) very nice aquascaping, love the over hangs.nice one:)
I like the aquascaping.
Why is the water level showing?
iam not to sure why the water level is showing i assume this is because of overflow pipe.
its been like this since i bought it from someone on here.
is there anything i can do about this
I've just searched and looked at some pics from when Jamie had the tank. The water level was showing in his pics, but maybe not as much.
If you wanted to raise and hide the level of the water could you extend the pipe a little?
