PS. Love the natural light approach......... ;)
Morning Si,
Im sure there will be lots of blood and sweat from all of us  ,
a couple of questions am i going to need poly under the tank base ?
also will i need a board for the tank to sit on or will the RSJs be enough ?? as its Acrylic !!!!
and Im sure the Sump will be O.K.
It was designed by someone I Know, and Im sure he has some idea of what he is doing :whistling:
Regards Steve
P.S. Thanks for the Help Wednesday Si and Si

your best with plywood under the tank witha thick layer of poly on it. the acrylic just won't have any 'give' in it for any imperfections on either the tank base, or something not being quite level. ya never know. :D
tony.
with Acrylic its normal, so i was advised by Neptune the builders of my main tank that its best to use a fine layer of foam on a ply base, acrlyic is flexible, glass isint
correct me if im wrong but this is what i was advised

Hi Steve.
Yep a Plywood base plate and layer of poly is best m8. Just remember when putting the holes in the base board for the closed loops etc, Make them a good size larger than the fittings. Its a PITA if they are too close/tight. Just use a big hole saw.

Si. :D

Hi Steve
Because of the size of your tank you will have to use 2 sheets of ply. When I did mine I use 25 mm and could not get 2 sheets the same thickness. I had to pack one sheet up with bits of formica to bring them both level.
Good looking set-up. Look forward to seeing it progress.

Can I just repeat a question asked earlier.........Its outside???
I know essex is a bit warmer than where I am from, but ..............
Whats the plans?
Regards
Alpha
The Storey so far goes,
we applied for an extension, but were turned down by winchester council, so we re applied for a conservatory but still we were turned down on a technicality, so not to be beaten were decided to go for an out building, ;)
Now the reason we have not erected the building is that the tank is acrylic and being 10' x 4' we would not get it through a door
So we have to build the building around the Tank :o
so here we go
We dug the base
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/les.JPG
Her we have Les my uncle and Genral builder, Bricklayer and Chippy (A Very handy man to Know)
Then we chucked in all the old glass from my previous Cracked tank and Filled the Hole with Hard Core

Meanwhile Andy at AC Aquatics was Building a 8' Sump to Simon Garratts Design

I would have thought a cabin that size with a 'radiator' consisting of hundreds of gallons of water heated to 26 deg C won't be cold... even in winter :D
Joking aside, are you going to insulate the inside of the roof etc, to avoid heat loss in winter etc.

you telling me that if you visited this tank in all its glory you'd be after a seat????? don't need a seat when your nose is in the sump, behind the tank over the tank in the tank etc etc. seats are only good for people that live there, in which case, one seat is more than enough if you know what i mean

Steve,
Any insulation on the shed? What sort of wattage are you looking at?
Kev
the Cabin will have the Back and one side insulate on the outside of the cabin and the others sides of the tank insulated on the inside, the tank is 1" thick Acrylic and has better thermal properties than glass and there will also be insluation above the tank in the roof and also an Aircon/heater Unit installed in the cabin, As regards to wattage of which items were you refering to ?
Regards Steve
I was wondering about the temp of the shed in the winter and how you were going to manage it.
Have you thought about some light tubes (or sun tubes, skylights e.t.c.) to let sun in?
I was asking about the total consumption of the system, and wether it would be worth looking at solar cells on the roof to power some of the equipment.
Kev
Total Consupmtion will be massive 3 x 400W Halides and 4 x 250W Halide + Actinics, 6 x Sequence 10000, Deltec 703 Skimmer with OR Feed Pump and 3 Eheims, Sand Bed Lighting, 2.5KW Aircon/Heater 2 KW Tank Heater, and so the list goes on and on and on.................................
Im Stopping Now as im Scaring Myself, :(
Would love to look into solar panels but not sure where to start ?????????/
And I havent even seen the bill from Clark and Garratt yet :P

I'd be more temted to start with the sun tubes, to get some natural light in to start with.
Here's a good start with the solar power....

Cheers Kev,
Do you have a link for sun tubes ?

Google it, there are loads of firms out there selling them and from what I can gather they are quite easy to fit!
Kev
Thanks Kev seems a great idea

A small tip. If you intend using any plug in timers on your set up or plug in transformers, it would be a good idea to space the sockets out a little. I learned to my cost that transformers and timers can prevent the use of adjacent sockets because they overlap.

Good Thinking Batman
Was Almost caught out there will leave a note for electrician tomorow,
Thanks again Keith,

Also worth offsetting the sockets by 50% (like you would lay bricks) to allow power cables to exit plugs between the plug tops of others .........
Learned the hard way ........

More to come
Wow thats really some tank
Just one question is it not more efficient to heat the water directly rather than the surrounding space, I looked into this when i setup my tank and ended up going for a heat exchanger. It's gonna get mighty cold in there during the winter, i'm surprised how often my heating kicks in even on the mildest of nights. Acrylic may be a better insulator than glass but with 10ft 44" of open space surely thats where the heat is going to escape.
the water will be heated with a series of convensional heaters,
How does you heat exchanger work ?
Regards Steve.
Wow thats gonna work out expensive :o
Mines connected to the house boiler, the aquarium water passes round a Titanium heat exchanger controlled via the IKS.
where did you get the heat exchanger and how much was it
