View Full Version : Another New Project

Well I thought it was about time I posted up my present project on UR so here goes. :D
After running several reefs over the years I shut down my present 60x18x24 in mid April as the new tank would be going in the same area. This time around the tank would be 87.5x24x24, with a 48x20x18 partitioned sump. The idea was to resolve a lot of the design issues I had with my present setup and include as many labour saving devices as possible or that I could afford <_< . The tank will hopefully be predominantly SPS, or that’s the plan anyway.

It all started with a pile of wood, as most stands seem to do, however I wanted something a bit different, so it would be painted and have glass doors, all DIY.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0171.JPG

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0174.JPG

After a couple of days it had progressed to something resembling a stand, as it turns out this was the easy bit, painting it was going to be a bit of an adventure

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0188.JPG

I had decided that this stand would be silver to match the rest of the room and furniture, it would also have glass doors, OK Deltec inspired but still different. So the first coat of primer went on it was then I realized that the painting was going to take more time and effort than I had expected

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0196.JPG

After a few coats of the primer I started on the silver coats, not having a compressor it was all done with tins of spray paint, lots

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0204.JPG

Finally got the silver to an acceptable finish on most of the tank, :D however due to the sump needing to be slipped in from one end this had to be left until the sump was built. :(

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0206.JPG

Sump was built up over another weekend, went mad with the silicon, and glass cutting for beginners, original tank was from my friends at UDA.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0199.JPG

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0198.JPG

The sump is designed with a good sized skimmer compartment, which will house two temp skimmers until I can rustle up the money for an AP 701, :) the temp set-up will be my Turboflotor 1000 and a red sea berlin, the red sea has had its venturi removed and replaced with a Aquamedic ocean runner needle wheel pump, this worked well when tested, but is only a temp measure

Sump slipped in from the open end, funny how no ones about when you need a hand.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0210.JPG

CWD
23-09-05, 00:11
Finally got the rest of the silver painted, the inside was just given a coat of oil based primer and hammerite :D

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0224.JPG

In my spare time I also ripped up the old laminate floor <_< and ran 2x 16mm pipes out to the garage, these were so I could relocate my TECO 680 into the garage, I also ran in a waste pipe for water changes and two ro tubes for water top up and water changes. I also ran a command wire for the peri pump which would also go in the garage and pump top-up from the ro butt.
Also took the opportunity to prop the floor and then had to lay a new laminate floor

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0251.JPG

I managed to convince a couple of colleagues from work that it would be a good idea to help me move the stand in from the garage one Sunday, it was seriously heavy and having the sump installed didn’t make it any easier, but with the help of a couple of skate board trolleys we managed.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0256.JPG

This is the garage end of the chiller piping, which will be boxed in eventually

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0258.JPG

And the RO butt and peri pump setup

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0260.JPG

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0262.JPG

Mounted up the IKS the idea is to have a window through the misted glass doors so that the display can be seen, and so that for once it is easy to get at and program

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0272.JPG

A bit more of the internals sorted out

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0304.JPG

And the a wider view of the stand, the sump also has a home made carbon fludizer fitted, a shoran pod converted for phosphate removal, and a deltec stirrer lurking behind the IKS panel

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0362.JPG

CWD
23-09-05, 00:16
Finally got the doors sorted out, you wouldn’t believe how difficult it was to source hinges, the doors were made at my local glazier and a toughened. The colour is an advertising exterior quality film on the inside of the doors, if this doesn’t last then I will get the doors sand blasted

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0387.JPG

And I also got around to hanging my additional Giesemann unit to fill up the gap

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/DSCN0292.JPG

Tank arrived today so hopefully more to follow shortly :D

hope you like :D

First class Colin, The pleasure of building your own set-up must be significant - looking forward to seeing the tank in place. Are you planning central or corner weirs for the water?

i can't get over the amount of quipment some people use on thier tanks.. the less the better i say, less to go wrong then, but i'm a pessimist?.. or is that optimist.. i'm not to sure..

Thanks for the kind comments guys,

To answer a couple of questions, the tank will have two corner weirs with 40mm durso's.

I got the hinges online from issac lord, unlike most kitchen cabinet hinges they snap into place and there is a lever to release them, so taking the doors of is a doddle, bit on the pricey side though, think they worked out at about a £10 a hinge as you buy the hinge and base and glass fitting as seperate items

Tanks now on the stand and i have been busy putting the trim around the top, will post a picture when i get it pushed back into place. :D also got to wait 12 days before it see's water

You make it look easy from all those perfect photos where everything fits.

I suspect you really bashed your thumb almost as often as I did  or did it really went that smoothly? :P

Considering how good the last tank looked (sorry to hear it's gone :() I'm sure this will be amazing. :D :D

Made up some acrylic weir covers from a sheet of blue 5mm acrylic, cut them out with my router, then cut a 3mm 90 degree line down the fold line. Heated them up with an industrial grade heat shrink gun and bent them to 90 degrees, not bad for £14.99 for two weirs

I run autotop-up through the kalk stirrer 24/7, and have the calcium reactor on 24/7 as well, although at present its not running that hard as i dont have a huge demand at the moment, all associated measurements are very stable so far, and i have never had an issue doing it this way in the past. Hope that helps

And what return pump?

CWD
29-11-05, 15:33
Stevielad, it has 2 x 40mm Durso's one in each corner weir,(very pleased as they are silent) returns are 1 OR6500 and an eheim 1060(this was originaly meant for draining the system during water changes but i thought i would use it as a second return so function changes depending on a couple of taps) ;)

Thanks for the kind remarks, full tank shots that are any good are difficult due to the position of the tank in my old dining room, i cant get far enough back to get a decent picture, and as you can see any from an angle get realy bad reflections from the conservatory, here is the best i can do at the moment which shows the tank as a whole. Corals came from local supply and from many of the site sponsors;)

Well its been a while since I updated this thread so here goes, the setup will be 2 years old in a couple of months and this is how it looks today.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z316/cwd_photo/IMG_1047Medium.jpg

Equipment has changed only slightly, I have just changed out the ballasts in my lights for nice new remote electronic units this was both to reduce electrical consumption and to give a more stable lamp output. Thanks Rob:thumbsup:
I have also added a degassing module to the calcium reactor, so the system now holds two full jars of ARM, the DKH at the output is now easily kept in the mid 50’s and the addition of a large fire extinguisher means I am not wasting money on non refillable C02 bottles.

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z316/cwd_photo/IMG_1081Medium.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z316/cwd_photo/IMG_1085Medium.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z316/cwd_photo/IMG_1086Medium.jpg

I have also built a new phosphate reactor to overcome the issues I had with the old DIY one, the new one is running 1 litre of Ultiphos with a relatively high through put, it could easily hold 5 times this amount. All the rest of the equipment is pretty much unchanged, however I do have plans to replace my skimmer when finances allow.

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z316/cwd_photo/IMG_1088.jpg

The system was designed to be pretty much SPS only, and its stayed that way apart from the odd hitchhiker, I am now trying to use up space on the left hand side of the tank around Clown land, however this depends totally on whether my female Clown likes the look of a coral or not, if it get the thumbs down she evicts it forthwith.:annoyed:

CWD

Well its been some time since I updated this thread, in 2008 the Tank was really growing out but unfortunately while i was on a diving holiday someone NOT left in charge of the tank thought they would lend a helping hand when a level alarm went of, switching of my IKS for 48 hrs, no chiller+ lights on permanently = 90% loss of all SPS :( I spent a couple of months hacking out dead coral, until the tank settled down with loads of flat worms and manjo's, the tank then ticked over for a couple of years with very little but fish and a few surviving corals. October 2010 I decided after working away for 8 months that it was about time i sorted the tank out and got it back to where it should be. Upgraded quite a bit of kit and its finally turning around, present state in the video below :)

Thanks Guys, Scoob dont know what you can possibly mean sockets:whistling: theres only 3 IKS plugbars plus 3 extension leads and oh another one you cant see running the skimmer and bio pearls  think theres about 31 plugs in total

Oh and the chiller and top up feed pumps in the garage...........

I did attend power usage anonymous for a while but obviously the treatment failed miserably
