just recieved the new tank this morning, brought down by john daniels at heritage aquatics in surrey, it took 6 of us to lift the tank and the same for the cabinet, with a minor adjustment to a couple of door frames.

its a 7x2x2 seabray and ill be running an oceans motions on it with a total of 8 different closed loops, powered by 2 10000 litre an hour sequance.

it also has 3 x 250 halide over top, and will be skimmed by an aquamedic 5000 shorty and a custom built sump also by heritage.

more to follow over the next couple of weeks.............

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/sdhbyev.JPG

things are now moving on slowly and ive started to paint the tank, it should take about 4 coats of, Dulux bermuda blue gloss.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/paint%20job.JPG

heres a picture of the sump with 2 x aqua medic ocean runner 3500, these will be the return pumps, and the sump will also contain 2 x micron bag/filters to remove excess waste, ive got 2 spare, so as i can wash the others when there dirty, weekly.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/sump%201.JPG

heres the refugium which will have a 5 inch sand bed, theres a 50mm hole drilled into the bottom , this will allow me to drain the deep sand bed periodically so as it dosent get toxic, this will happen about once a year, straight into the sump, then outside to the drain.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/refugium%20drain.JPG

heres a quick pic of the kayos at the family home, i cant reelly get on until ive finished the paint and the rest of my plumbing arrives from nick at coral culture, but i will keep you posted.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/kit.JPG

just hard plumbed all the pipework to the wall, so all i have to do is slide the tank up to the wall and connect it up and connect up inside the cabinet....

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/roos%20pipework.JPG

the large pipe up the middle is 40mm, for rockwork closed loops, and is supplied by 1 of 2 10000 sequances.

the single small pipe at either end , that reach over and along the wall is 25mm, these are the 2 return pipes from 2 oceanrunner 3500,s, from sump, back to the tank.

the other pipes, 2 at each end, are 32mm, 4 in total, closed loop pipework, that will be powered by an oceans motions 4 way, supplied by 1 of 2 10000 sequances.

more to follow............................

i was at heritage for the first time yesterday and have to say that i was very impressed with their set up, will be good to see what theyre like in december when their renovations are complete!

I went to heritage for the first time today. The plans are to totally renew all filters etc into the shed which is past the shop entrance, the 20' display tank is on the move and they are having more tanks in a new part of the shop which will be in the shed just before the entrance.I think the sale weekend will be busy as it was busy today as more people seem to be finding it. I am nothing to do with the shop but if anyone is thinking about taking a trip there it is well worth finding.Good luck with the tank by the way, be interesting to see the pictures as things progress.

about once a year i will dump about 5 inches of water from inside the sand bed, which is seperate from the refugium, becouse there is no movement.
that way all the water that is sat in the bed, that can start to go abit toxic, can be replenished, to continue its cycle...........................

Did you import it or source it from a UK shop?

Thanks and good luck.

Hi Rupert,
Nice tank you must be having a lot of fun putting it all together
I hope you don’t mind me poking my nose in but that sump looks a bit small for a tank that size, from the pics it looks like the separate fuge with its constant water level doesn’t leave much sump to take any water that will drain from the display tank when the return pumps are turned off. If you run the level low in the sump to compensate for its size then the water draining from the fuge will have to drop a long way making lots of little bubbles above the return pumps.
I hope I’ve got it all wrong

P.S. There’s no need for silicone on the OM4way a few wraps of PTFE tape does the job and should be used otherwise you risk striping the threads

abyss
05-11-05, 07:47
adam

the sump has a good constant volume as the refugium is a seperate tank in itself and where most people use the sump as a place to put alot of the equipment, all of mine is outside.

the aquamedic 5000 shorty is in its own cabinet,

also in that cabinet is, aquamedic 1000 calcium reactor

aquamedic 1000 nitrate reductor

and there are 2 reactors, one phosphate reactor

and one carbon reactor, outside of the sump.

most filtration will be achieved by this equipment and 100 kg of live rock, but most importantly, there are 2 very large TMC micron bags built into the sump and not much can get through these.

i will post some more pics later on this afternoon, i did go a bit over board with the silicon though, well spotted, but as a result i didnt get a single weep from any plumbing or equipment......better safe than sorry and paul at oceans motions, did supply me with a complete set of spare threaded fittings.....good service.

hope this may help and thanks for the advice.....regards

also ive started to make progres on the electrics, big thanks to my mate pete.
hes incorporated a micro switch into the doors, that switches on 12v cabinet lights in all the cabinet and also all electrics will be trunked on the doors, so when carrying out maint its easy to get to and to issolate.
and theres a 12 key switch panel on the front right hand door and led,s, which will allow me to monitor the curcuits and rcd,s at a glance...

Hey Rupert, A few questions if I can, I am looking at a OM4 way for my 3X2X2 which I am currently setting up.

Your tank is amazing and I have a few questions that could help me with my setup?

Do the micron bag catch much gunk? Are they a worthwhile addition for the feed to the sump?

What is the reason for draining the Refugium? do you clear it all out together or just move all the water to the sump? Is the DSB recharged or disturbed? Interested why you have done this, I can do this in my setup but not sure of the benefits. Is there a plenium to drain this?

on your plumbing, is this correct
40mm for rock work closed loop - is this the spray bars behind the rock work under the egg Crete? Is it just the bar in the middle. Is this just pipe with holes in it to have movement behind the LR? is this on the other 10k sequence pump? would this be OK in the OM CL in your opinion for my 3 foot?

Is your DBS in tank go under the egg crete? if not why not? Does the sand blow everywhere with the circulation you have? What was the reason for the acrylic wall - is this to hold the egg Crete up? I guess I can't make up the closed loops you have - Would love to understand how this works as this is the stage I am up to now.

25mm for the return from sump (X2 on OR3500 - how have there worked out for you? 900 GPH X 2 enough turnover - what size are your return lines from tank to sump?)

32mm for the closed loop from the OM. - later changed to 25 for more pressure. would you recommend this? On my 3X2X2 I will have one sequence 10k I feel might be to much - but hey the more the merrier I guess. What do you use for the second 10k pump for that you have? Is this a constant flow without a OM 4 way?

£240 for the OM - what was the actual deal that you got from OM? What was the extra plumbing part you got from them? Did you get the rest of the plumbing from Coralculture? - including them ball valve with unions bits? Just want to see what I can get from a deal from OM. Also did you see the outlets they have that rotate? Do you think these would be useful or just the 45 bend are OK?

Also do you ever need a need for a chiller in this tank? I guess you gotta wait for summer to find out.

I know this is a lot of questions - hope you can fill me in a bit.

here is a picture of the stand I have completed that I will be working on form this week.

firstly balla, were do you live, if its local ish you can pop down anytime to take a look.

as awnsers to your questions though,

the micron bags catch loads, its the only form of mechanical filtration on the whole tank, i change them about once a week, just wash em out and swap them with the spare set, i ran neat rowa into them and it didnt leach back into the tank.

ive installed a 40mm valve into the base of the refugium, this is so i can drain it periodically, probably once evry 8 months or so, the sand bed itself is built onto a plenum, so you would only drain of potentialy toxic water and no sand,.

the 2nd sequance powers the rockwork closed loops which starts as 40mm up to the back of the tank and then into a 32mm set of pipework throughout, this does the large spray bar all along the back and the spray bars inside all the rock work, the uprights, and is on from 0700 to 2359, then 0200 to 0230, then 0400 to 0430, this gives a bit less flow through the rock at night.

the acrylic wall is completely sealed with silicone, this cuases a void behind it and under the egg crate sperating all the sand at the front from the open space under all the rock, the egg crate itself is held up on a series of 40mm stilts so as all the loops can run under it.

there are 2 x 25mm returns, and the water drains from the tank down 2 x 40mm drilled holes in the base of the tank,

the center drilling in the base, with strainer is the feed for the 2 sequances, 1 being the rockwork closed loops, the other being the oceans motions 4 way. this allows for a total water movement volume and turnover of 27000 litres an hour which is ample with no dead spots in tank.

i got all my plumbing from nick at coral culture, and i did order alot and he had most of it in most of the time and i got in touch with paul at oceans motions, which is in canada, talked about which one i wanted, converted to 240v with extra drum and a complete 40mm spare intake 4 x 32mm outlets plus a spare set for free. excellent service and very promt, he phoned me back to confirm as i was using metric fitting from nick and wanted to be sure it was going to fit. excellent piece of kit..............

ther is no need for a chiller yet, it stays at about 25 at night to about 26 throughout the day, i put a habistat cool control in the sump cabinet, and when the temp hits 25, it turns on a vent axia fan, extracting the warm air straight out of the house and a fan, assisting in the extraction of warm air.

aswell as that there is a 6 pc fan group blowing air ocer the tanks water surface to take the heat away from the halides, all seems to work and is only on during white light hours...

and your right, that was alot of questions, hope this helps and bye the way your picture never did come through, so keep us posted,.

kind regards............................rupert.

Rupert, that is truly an amazing set-up, beautiful in every way just like a good tank should be, very very impressed here.

that rock and aquascaping is da bomb, if you don't mind me asking (i haven't read it anywhere i don't think) where did you get the rock from?

Rupert, how are you, happy new year.

Definetly must pop down and have a look, we are off to the Maldives Friday (thank god) been a crap couple of months health wise (in and out of hospital).

Hope the family are well.

Once we are back I will Pm you about popping down.

May go and see JD tomorrow for another couple of kilos of liverock rubble (that will be my back chamber full then).

Aquatronica is a great piece of kit, I put everything through it. Only have the PH probe at present and the standard temp one, will get calcium once its out and the PC interface.

Cheers

Jon

firstly balla, were do you live, if its local ish you can pop down anytime to take a look.

as awnsers to your questions though,

the micron bags catch loads, its the only form of mechanical filtration on the whole tank, i change them about once a week, just wash em out and swap them with the spare set, i ran neat rowa into them and it didnt leach back into the tank.

ive installed a 40mm valve into the base of the refugium, this is so i can drain it periodically, probably once evry 8 months or so, the sand bed itself is built onto a plenum, so you would only drain of potentialy toxic water and no sand,.

the 2nd sequance powers the rockwork closed loops which starts as 40mm up to the back of the tank and then into a 32mm set of pipework throughout, this does the large spray bar all along the back and the spray bars inside all the rock work, the uprights, and is on from 0700 to 2359, then 0200 to 0230, then 0400 to 0430, this gives a bit less flow through the rock at night.

Hey Rupet, Thanks for the reply,

Well I am based in Ireland so a bit far to pop down but thanks for the invite.

OK so - I guess I will look at micron bags myself as I need to remove the guk once it starts.

On the divider that is siliconed in - is it correct to say that you have no sand under your rock? Is the divider holding the sand at the font of the tank and behind the divider it is bare bottom? This allowing you to run the closed loop under the egg crete that is raised?

If this is correct - do you get sand blowing over under the rocks?

Looking for a sequence pump at the moment - just missed one that was up for sale on the forums. Not to worry will chase one down soon.

Thanks again for the respone to the questions.

Andrew
