Hi Muzzy
It does look like there is alot of rock in there. As it happens there is about 40kgs of Figi rock and 20 kg of indonesian. THis is all placed on the base and form the central islands.
The rock on the rear wall is infact fake rock from TMC ( pls see attached pics).
I decided to go for this as opposed to a black or blue background so that the back wall can be used to attach frags creating more swimming space and greater water volume.
I like it anyway:)
Pickture of rock fitted but tank empty to show how little space is used and all the ledges for adding frags.

Hi Gio
the real rock is from my old tank so has had 18 months to purple up. The fake rock aready has 5mm coralie spots all over it, and is blending in well.
Some pics of the sump as requested:
MOre of sump - I'v gone for a hybrid of MM and skimmer - skimmer taking out some serious nogg:)
RH side with fluidised Rowa. Recirculating sulphur deitrator and calcium reactor to be added soon.

Another showing the inside of the hood with 328 watts of T5s plus space for one more.
Third pic of inside hood showing dry well, double durso standpipes etc.
 :o U could say its safe but having a water pump next to the plugs is asking for trouble. <_<
SALT WATER AND ELECTRICITY DONT LIKE EACH OTHER :D
i thought the background looked fake, i didnt like to say though
looks good though.
one point.... it must be pretty difficult working in the tank with that high lip at the front of the tank?
Have you now started replacing all the fish that died in your wipeout, or are you taking a breather? You must have been gutted loosing that large shoal of chromis, the clownfish and the blue face angel  Did you get to the bottom of what the cause was?

hi geo - its a potential risk - managed down to negligable risk as the whole system is on a circuit breaker to protect human life, and the way these deltec pumps are plummed in mean that if you follow a sequence of tasks when taking the pump off - there is no risk of accidental spraying of saltwater - thanks for the concern though :D

Muzzy - you are a born diplomat sir ;)
Yes the lip does mean I have to stand on a chair to work inside the tank, which was an issue when doing the aquascaping. On the positive side, although I'm 6ft 1 tall, the height does stop me gratuitously fiddling and therefore keeps my hands out.

Hi Kieth
Yes those were dark times - my wife didn't react well, although our son (4 and three quaters) looked on with gay abondon or Buddha like non attachment ( I hope he turns out normal (jk)).
I'm not adding any more fish until after xmas to allow a couple of parasitic lifecycles to pass. I have no definative idea as to what caused the problems - I did think of taking the Blue face to the vet for a diagnosis, but the Cat's recent health care has cost £2.5k so we had to prioritise :(
I have been planning that fish scheme for quite a while and I wont repeat it. The idea that is begining to emerge is to go for much smaller fish load and individual size. I do like it when fish arent immediately obvious, and become apparent when looking at corals, almost as an incidental feature. Theres a kind of satisfaction in making one have to actively look, and feel rewarded when you find them.
How are your plans comming along?

Yes, can appreciate this, and there are a lot of 'character' type fishes that you can try in this role. Of course, being an Essex boy I feel duty bound to adopt a less subtle approach to stocking ....

My system is progressing steadily, thanks for asking. No major traumas so far (fingers crossed). It has its first birthday next weekend and I'll be posting an update to the thread and on the website then.

Keith

Hi Kieth
Some wannabe ASBO type kicked the cat in the belly and sent him flying, resulting in the need for cat ICU for a while.
Clearly the Polizei have higher priorities, however if I find the offender ( which maybe possible now the cat has nano CCTV fitted), 90 days detention without charge will seem like a walk in the park
As a matter of interest are you either HO or DH?
Best wishes

Lol - thanks Steve - since you came over - I'v taken delivery of some new high red spectrum T5s called 'Fiji Purple' from Germany - and the effect on blues/pinks/red/purple is great - I'v a couple of spare 24w tubes if you want to borrow them and see the impact - I doubt I'll get them back:rolleyes:
Heres a pic just to give an idea - far too purple on thier own but they are nice in combination. I think Japanese reefers were first to do this.
Have you done the Spur 2 yet?

are the fiji purple the new zeovit t5's?
any chance of that link for the bulbs?

Thanks Jon
I wish I could take credit as some sort of acomplished reefer - sadly not:o I'm no SPS Hoover;) . These results are straightforward to achieve using the ZEOvit method. It takes sometime and patience to learn how to use the system, but if you are successful in keeping sps anyway - its just a question of following the guide and observing cause and effect. I'm pretty sure that the FM range will also produce similar results from what I'v seen at the STM open evening and discussing it with Claude.
The other element is light spectrum, and I use some red in the mix (only really possible with nutrient limited water).
Cheers
Simon
where are you and sorry to keep asking any chance of the link for the bulbs?
are the fiji purple the new zeovit t5's?
Hi Maestro
they do two types:
'Coral Lights' which is 5% red and the remainder 50/50 blue/white. These do a great job compared with what we usually have available and Nick at coral culture stocks them.
The Fiji purple is as described. They ship to the UK, but I'm sure nick will bring them in soon.

Hi Arrows
Brighton - I have a couple of 24w and 54w watt tubes if you want to buy one. I'm currently using 7 coral lights and 5 Fiji Purples but over ordered on the Fijis to experiment with the mix.

only along the road then, ill have a look at what wattage mine are, i have 5 foot long bulbs.
just looked they are t5 54 watt tubes, how much do you want for them and do you have two?

Thanks simon, Im added 2 t5's to my dual halides so may try a blue and a fiji purple instead of 2 blues.
Like you say I think you need very low nutrient water or the purple may not look great.
Been using ultralith system for 6 weeks so still early days

5 ft T5s are 80w - looks like a direct order or request via nick. Welcome to comeover anyways - how do you light your reef?

Sounds good. The red purple spectrum runs the risk of algae blooms unless we have nutrient limited water. Yours looks very clean so you should be OK
I found a I came off the fense re zeo at arround 3 - 4 months - so probably the same for FM. Your tank looks great.
just looked they are t5 54 watt tubes, how much do you want for them and do you have two?
Oh OK - Yes I have two - I'd want cost plus share of P&P over here so arround 40 I guess.
Hopefully Nick will have then in when I need the replacements.

Simon, it was my pleasure. I must say that your tank is truely stunning. Having now seen a mature zeovit system in action, I can really see what all the fuss is about.....
An often over used saying, but picture's simply cannot do this tank justice.
Fantastic reefkeeping....
P.S. I cannot wait to see your rainbow acan develope in the next few months.....:D
To spshoover,
Simon, do you have any upto date pictures on your zoa reactor running and have you found any benefits or problems, looking to do one of these myself, also if you find your one works, can you sell me one of your types?

you picked up some nice corals trythechi, that fiji purple tube is very different, the red specturm certainly brings a few colours out that you don't normally see.
Does it promote algae growth though?

Hi Peter
The red spectrum will promote undesirable alage growth if there are nutrients to feed off. As we are running 'nutrient limited' water in our SPS tanks - that shouldnt be a problem - I havent had any alage growth in the three weeks since I added 5 of these. I wouldnt recommend adding them if there are signs of algae - whatever the test kits say.
What I have noticed is that in addition to the different colors that are reflected back to the eye, is that pigmentation of some SPS are begining to change for the richer.
Cheers

when you say for the richer, do you mean darker colours? How many of those tubes do u have running over the tank?

Richer = more vibrant - rather than darker. More like comparing a slightly diluted water color with a more diluted water color.
ATM - I run 5 out of the 12 with Fiji Purples - 6 .coral lights. and one aqua medic ocean blue actinic at the front.

Wow. Fantastic tank. I'm starting my 8 footer, and wasn't sure about the Natureform background, as I hadnt seen a tank with it in. Im now convinced. Im also going to use some replica rock in conjunction with this, as I have some in my other tank, and its getting colonised already. When you stuck the background on with silicone, did you have to silicone around all the edges ?
Looks stunning, like the pics from above, bet your well pleased mate, keep it up.....

No Sir, thank you for having me over again and plying me with outlandishly coloured small polyped stonkers. Theyre on the weir now:D . A mate of mine popped in this afternoon and may buy my cube when i upgrade so its just a matter of a bit of saving. Which, in this hobby is about as easy as trying to use a walking stick with a wheel on.

Time for an update I think! I've been stalking your posts  and noticed lots of apparent activity - swapping T5's for halides? changing the skimmer? etc?
Is your upgrade to something bigger now on, or you rearranging this setup?

Hi all
sorry for not replying to all the PMs and Tony's requests a few months ago. To cut a long story short, I have been precoocupied with the divorce and separation from my wife and boys and all so have had a few major distractions. I have been out of the house since the begining of March this year and the tank has more or less looked after itself since then with the occassional prodibio additions. RO/DI top up every few days. CA Rx stopped working a few months ago, Skimmer stopped. No water changes for months. Basically the tank became the lowest priority (well higher than the hedge cutting jobs) for all this time. Amazing that it looks so good. A few casualties, but considering the maintenance it hasn't had - I'm impressed at just how stable and self sustaining the ecosystem has been during this period!
I now really must sell the tank and contents, so will start up a separate thread complying with the new rules:sorry:. Well this really is the end of Tato Lagoon a few years on and matured from the first photos. I may keep some of the hardware like the skimmer and wave box for a future reef project a few years down the line maybe (unless sold as a package), and hope that whoever gets this tank and its parts enjoys them. All the best, and many thanks for all who have shown an ineterest and shared in my exciting journey.
Many thanks:thanks:
Simon
