View Full Version : Phils 6 Footer
After much deliberations, I've dismantled my old tank set-up, and am providing a major overhaul to the tank - although I'm not increasing the size of the main tank (6x2x2) - I think that would be one step to far for my darling wife to be able to cope with (She keeps recalling now when I set up the 6foot tank first time around it was on the basis that is was the last ever ever ever upgrade <_< )
The upgrades include:
1. Replacement of 4xStreams with 3xSequence 10000 on closed loops
2. Move the sump and all sump related hardware from under the tank to the garage (This has involved running the flow/return pipes from the conservatory through the study and into the garage, and has been highly welcomed - NOT - but they're in now, and not moving).
3. Replacement of the Aquamedic 2x250 Halide unit with 2x400s using Diamond reflectors
The new tank is a classic SiG and SiC design:
The tank was drilled in the pouring rain - so no action piccie shots of that I'm afraid, although SiC's drill did leave us for the drillie heaven in the sky after a couple of holes!
Here's SiG in action

Here's the overall layout (pipes not glue'd yet)

And finally, the Sequences - just hoping there will be enough flow in the tank

All my existing stock is in a temporary tank in the garage, and it's going to be around a three week project to complete the set-up and start transferring over stock
Will keep this thread updated
Phil
Looks Smart & Neat Phil...look forward to seeing hearing about the next stage...
Mark...
Yes very neat, I look forward to the updates.

Phil
Looking good
I think you can take the steel stand away though. The pipework will hold the tank up, no problem. :D
Keith
looks good phil
wish i could do my plumbing and have completed in a 3 week project
Regards Steve
Lokking good  keep us updated.
Thanks for the comments guys - appreciated - I am really looking forward to getting it all back up and running again.
And for those that have Pm'd me - yes - the streams will be up for sale latter on once the new tank is up and running
I have 2x6100, 2x6000, 1x7094 plus light sensor and 3xMagnets. I am not reserving any of them until I advertise, unless someone makes me a great offer for the whole lot (and is prepared to send a deposit to secure them)
Phil
Looking good, as above keep the pics coming!
I take it those are flexible hoses on the pumps to keep vibrations etc down? Looks like a good idea!
Will you be using hose clamps on them? If so what you are thinking of getting? The "mikalor" ones are very good and give even pressure all around the hose.
Hi - yes the flexible hose is to take any vibration out, and hopefully keep noise to a minimum
I must admit, I was just going to get B&Q jubilee clips - but clearly there is going to be quite a bit of flow / pressure around them, so if there is a better solution - I'd like to know more !
Phil
Na dont use those they are useless. Basically they pinch the hose where they tighten up and may cause a leak, oh the joys I had with mine, fixed with lots of silicone!
The mikalor hose clamps are expensive but they are very good, they apply equal pressure all around the hose.

They are made of stainless too which helps.
You can either buy them online or there is a place in ocean village southampton called "pirtek" that will do them. There might be one closer to you however. Other hydraulic places should stock them too, some car parts distributers too.
HTH
update please phil !!
This was a 3 week project and 2 are up :P
More Pics Please Phil
Regards Steve
Steve - thanks for reminding me
Well - most of the pipework is ready, and the sump in the garage is also ready.
I hope to start filling it with water tomorrow night / saturday.
Will update piccies over the weekend - just fingers crossed for no leaks!
Phil
Did it leak Phil ?
Regards Steve
YUP!
I filled the tank up mostly with the water from Si Garratts tank on Friday night (transported 115 gals in buckets on Friday evening!). Completed the fill yesterday and today with Instant Ocean
Well, all three Sequences leaked at the screw thread joints - I am sorting this at the mo - got one of them running (the one now not leaking), and am just sorting out the other two. I must say the one that is running though is very quiet - I am impressed.
I brought a new Ocean Runner 6500 as the return pump - once I had water over the wier, and the sump was filling I fired it up - blimey! What a monster
One of my solvent welded joints pinged off straight away - major panic to shut off all the taps - but I lost quite a lot of water in the garage
Re-glued it and decided to drop the pump down to the Eheim 1262 to get things going - BUT the pump is too powerful for the capacity of the Wier / Durso
So, stepped the pump down again to an Aquabee 3000 - the Durso can cope with this, but the level in the main tank is a bit too high, and the water is just touching the underside of the brace bars - and I though I'd left plenty of room as well!
Have also got a leaking joint on the return pipe by the tank - so am going to have to remove all the pipework to get at it
Having a bit of a sense of humour failure to be honest - and the wife nagging me to finish off the decorating, and re-iterating my words that there would not be any leaks etc is not helping either
Phil
Looks great ....
What are the closed loop pumps .. output etc.. there seems to be plenty of flow. I am thinking about a 6 footer ... Do i need as many pumps and flow as that ????
The closed loop pumps are Sequence 10000s
They are 10,000 litres per hour - the pack quite a punch as well!
Depends what you want to keep - if SPS, then 3x10,000s would give 44 times turnover, but I'll probably have them on interval with only 2 running at a time (controlled on the IKS)
Phil
Right - thinks have calmed a bit
I now have two sequences up and running - and may get the third done tonight
I've fixed the leaking pipe on the sump return, and have the system up and running again, connecting the sump in the garage to the main tank
However - I seem to have air entering the Durso pipe - I can see bubbles being drawn down into the water in the wier, and sucked up into the Durso. The effect if this is a LOT of gurgling in the pipes that run through the study to the garage, and then lots of air coming out of inlet to the sump, where the water comes in.
I HAVE to quieten this down - any ideas how to prevent air entering the durso pipe at all greatfully received
Phil
good luck, phil
hope all goes well
Kind regards Steve
Here's the update from the weekend's efforts
The main tank has a couple of bags of aragamax in and 40Kgs of Reefbones. The Reefbones at literally chucked in to start off the curing process and for assessing displacement
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pic014_2005_11_21_LowRes.jpg
Here is my Durso / Wier:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pic016_2005_11_21_LowRes.jpg
This is where excessive air is getting drawn in and is causing a lot of gurgling in the pipes through the study and into the garage!
In the garage, the sump where the main tank water flow enters:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pic019_2005_11_21_LowRes.jpg
Move over a sand bed, through an Algae partition and through to the return pump - again I have a problem with the flow rates I can get through the Durso, and have had to drop down to a Aquabee 3000 pump to prevent the main tank from filling !
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pic020_2005_11_21_LowRes.jpg
Here's the Sequences all plumbed in (the third is not yet running - but should be ready to now)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploads/Pic012_2005_11_21_LowRes.jpg
Getting the Sequences to seal was pretty difficult - plenty of TPFE and a "constrictor" to get enough leverage to turn was needed - butthey are ok now
Phil
looking good phil, i know exactly what you mean with those sequances, but its looking good, very tidy indeed, keep the pics coming................
im not saying a work until i have fired up my sequence
Regards Steve.
I see you got the clamps, how do you rate them? I hope they gave a good seal!.
What will you do about the durso? Can you make the pipes bigger or will you need another overflow?
im not saying a work until i have fired up my sequence
Have you got water pressure on them ? I found that they leaked as soon as the taps were opened. I had to re-do them around 3 times to get them to seal though
I see you got the clamps, how do you rate them? I hope they gave a good seal!.
I got them from Hypose - much cheaper the Pirtek. They feel a good quality piece of kit as well, and they are not leaking (and as they have 150gals sat just above them!) i guess they're doing a good job!
What will you do about the durso? Can you make the pipes bigger or will you need another overflow?
Just been discussing with SiG - plan is to add a stand pipe just after the drop to see if this removes the air from carrying on down the pipe to the garage. The thinking is this will quieten it down and increase the flow
Making the pipes bigger or adding another wier is not really an option!
Phil
All three Sequences now running

All ya gotta do now phil is put the dirty laundry in and a cup of powder. ;)

Nope - the laundry is already in the skimmer - I thought the foam on the skimmer was from the soap powder :P

Hi Phil
Another option would be to wedge thick foam inside the weir, i did this and it cut down on noise and bubbles--- ;)
yes - that's an idea - will try that as well - thanks

Hi,
Looking really good. :thumbsup: I also have similar problems with my return being very noise and i will be trying to;
A regulate the amount of water going back into the tank.
B regulating the amount of water going to the sump by taping both off.
Any other ideas let me know or if you already have that then dont feel patronised just let me know so i can make changes too!
Cheers
Rich
P.S didnt know there was so many southampton area reefers on here!
:thanx:

Like me If anyone in the midlands is interested  , also make sure that braided pvc you are using is food quality as there is two types ones food quality ones not <_<
The difference is ones toxic the others not, Theres no way of telling unless you know the manufacturer ;)
If you are not sure pm me and I will send you a free sample to be on the safe side if you let me know the size even though it looks like 1 1/4" to me but photos can be decieving :)
Hi
I was assured that the hose is food grade piping
I guess they should (!!) know what they were talking about
Would a close-up photo be enough to be able to tell ?
I also have similar problems with my return being very noise and i will be trying to;
Thanks Richard - it's the overflow pipework running off the Durso, through the study and into the garage is where the noise is - the return pipework seems ok
Thanks though

No that's fine, I know of Hyphose very well and if they say its food grade it stands a very good chance it's food grade
What pumps are you using there? As I will be setting up a 6x2x2.5 tank very soon and I am looking for some circulation pumps for it
I need them to be as silent as possible as it is going to be a in-the-wall tank in the livving room
Cheers
Craig
Craig - they are Sequence 10000 pumps
I was worried about the noise, but now they are running - they're much quieter than I thought they were going to be (or maybe that the noise from the overflow is drowning them out  )
You need to make sure you get the Marinised versions. I got mine from Nick at Coralculture

Did bigger hole work?
I removed the cap completely from the Durso, and that made no difference, so I didn't drill a slightly larger hole
Phil
Looks like good fun Phil :D
Them Sequence 10000 pumps are good you will
be ok with them,
keep up the good work mate!
Craig
I too am in the process of installing 6 sequence pumps (10000's) and 2 bigger ones.
6 for Closed loops and the other 2 for return.
I thing that is is the best way to go.
looking gd keep us posted

Latest updates to the Tank re-build
I've made up some reef racking - to suspend the live rock above the inlet pipes for the Sequences - the aim to get as much flow through the rockwork as possible and avoid too many dead spots - hope the practice is as good as the theory
Have so far added 40Kgs of Reef bones, and yesterday added 35Kgs of uncured LR
Ignore the rock work - it's just "thrown" in there whilst the curing takes place. I will then add in some of my live rock from the temporary tank in the garage
