Does anyone know the difference between the two? They seem to do the same job to me.

Yep - just different ways of adding calcium. Each has slightly different effects - kalk tends to raise pH, calcium reactors tend to lower pH. Some therefore run both. Kalk at night and calcium reactor by day to counter natural day/night pH swings in the aquarium.
