Nano Tank Spec:-

(*Note; volumes are before displacement)

Display tank size:- 22lts (6gal)
Sump size:- 30ts (8gal)
Filtration:- 20Kg (44lbs) Live Rock - 11 lts(3gal) refugium with mud and macro algae system (future scope for a DIY nano skimmer)
Water turnover:- 650lt/hr PH + 1000lt/hr Eheim return pump = 1650lt/hr (display tank water turned over 55 times every hour, total water volume turned over 31 times /hour)
Main tank lighting:- 2 x 14W T5 luminaire (= 4.7WPG) 12 hour photoperiod
Refugium lighting = 1 x 18W PC
S.G. = 1.026
---------------------------------------------------------------
I've never kept marine/salty fish before, although i do have a few f/w tropical tanks.

I was inspired by this set up to start a nano tank, with money and space being a major limiting factor for me ......

http://www.reefscapes.net/nano/fullpic2.jpg

Here is a pic of the space i have, my future nano tank is sitting atop the shellies tank at the moment (do as i do and ignore any mess :) )

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/5210/space2gw.jpg

This is what i proposed to do ......

http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/3125/plan6qz.jpg

From top to bottom ....

In the cupboard at the top i will keep the top-up water in a plastic jerry can type bottle with a fitted tap, once i have established the rate of water loss i will adjust the tap to drip accordingly (the pipe is dripping from a height here for illustrative purposes only)
In the actual alcove space, i'm probably going to hang my lighting (this depends on whether i can mod the hood to take twin compacts.
Below will be the tank in front with a small 10lt aquaone cube that will house the heater, some crushed live rock a power head to return the water to the tank. Attached to the back of the nano tank will be an overflow box, created using a small and large specimen box (an idea put to me in another thread)
Below this is a drawer
Below this is an empty space (currently filled with crap)

I intend to get the water from the tank to the sump via an overflow box (because its cheaper than buying a canister filter), seen here;-

http://img434.imageshack.us/img434/1228/overflowbox61rf.jpg

After speaking to numerous people and getting numerous blank looks, i've decided not to paint the inside of the tank, i will hide the overflow instead

http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/8057/progress24iz.jpg

Foam to hide the box (trouble is the overflow box now wants to float away!)
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/2909/overflowbox115kb.jpg
Overflow is working a treat, its draining about 500lts/hr - the inlet pump is an eheim compact pump 1000 which has a variable throughput of 150 - 1000 lt/hr

Sump is ready to go

rearly well thought out

but can i advise you to remove the foam from the over flow box

it can leach out chemicals into the water. i know this because i phoned the factory when i wanted to do the back on my rio 180

Paul

Hi, thanks for reply

This is a type of expanding foam that is inert once cured, the same stuff used for ponds

assuming the latter shots are of the 6gal display tank, I'd question whther you really have 20kg of rock in there.... unless there is some in the sump? 20kg is a lot for that water volume too...14gal from info in first post (?) works out to 1.5kgs per gallon - should be 1.5LBS iirc. It looks about right though.... but if you paid for 20kgs.....

Please don't take offence, but, personally I would lose some of the sand. Had the same effect in my tank looked better when I removed some and it just covers the base, makes the tank look bigger somehow.

The foam hides the DIY overflow box and in time will become covered in algae and hopefully blend in with the rockwork :)

Hi There

Your Tank looks fantastic..........well done

I just wanted to ask how you found the ehiem compact as a return pump as i was
thinking of getting one to replace my broken down Aquaclear so just a few questions

Is it Quiet?
Its it reliable?

Thanks

Looks like lots of planning and work for a small tank - just as much as a big one I guess! ;) A good variety of inverts there.

How is the foam coming on - is it fading into the background a bit more?

Have you got two ground dwelling gobies in there now? How are they interacting?

Hi, here is an update :)

Unfortunately both gobies died :( i tested for EVERYTHING and was still left scratching my head. I have a new guy in there now who is doing fine :)

Eheim pump is really good imo, the adjustable flow is a godsend :) The only fault i would pick with it is the suckers are crap

The sun coral is out quite a bit as i have it in shade underneath a live rock bridge, i target feed brineshrimp and phytoplankton with a pipette in the evenings, i don't take it out of the water :)

Looks good,, I have been keeping marines / reefs for over 11 years and i would be very wary of setting up a nano ... so i will be watching this thread with interest...... I hope it goes great ,,, Just keep an eye on your water quality ALL the time , with such a small volume of water, it is SO much harder to keep it great..... The bigger the tank the easier.... so you have a harder job than 90 per cent of peeps on here. I am not in any way trying to be downbeat ( your tank looks great )

Just keep your fish stock VERY low and do regular water changes........

What skimmer have you ?/

Paul

Tank has been up 2 1/2 months (where did you get 5 days from?) i have a seaclone (only one that would fit my sump)

I have my stock of fish now (1 clown and 1 scooter dragonette)

tell me about the water issues, i had a flood last night, must have dosed about 2 - 3 litres of RO and my sg. dropped from 1.025 to 1.020 :(

I HAVE ALREADY SEEN A FEW POSTINGS OF YOUR TANK ON CYBERS SITE,
DOING VERY WELL BY THE LOOKS OF IT.
I GAVE RICHY A QUICK PIC OF MY NANNO WHEN I FIRST SET IT UP ,WHICH WAS POSTED AFTER YOUR TANK PICS.
I WOULD HAVE TO REPEAT THAT ITS AMAZING HOW QUICKLY WATER PAR.
CAN CHANGE LITERALLY OVER NIGHT IN SUCH A SMALL VOLUME OF WATER.
HAVING SAID THAT MY NANNO IS NOW DOING BETTER THAN MY MAIN DISPLAY TANK WHICH HAS BEEN NEGLECTED SINCE THE START OF THE BUILD OF MY NEW CUSTOM REEF TANK. - :( HOPEFULLY DUE TO BE COMPLETED IN THE NEWYEAR!
LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR TANK,
GOOD LUCK!!

JOHN.

Pistol shrimp, despite being blind, knows where the food is at (who needs a goby!)

i find it facinating how my two nano fish find company in themselves, despite being a totally different species and inhabiting different strata of the tank, they always seem to spend time together, whether this be out of curiosity or comfort its very cute :lurve:

After my pistol shrimp collapsed part of my reef, i had to rebuild it tonight, filling in his tunnels and moving his piles of stones. He 'clipped' me on one occasion, luckily i was wearing gloves. Anyway after the reshufle i had the cam and hand and caught "the adventures of Rodney and his mighty claw!"

Check it out
Part #1
A poor little blue legged hermit falls into the path of Rodney, knowing that he's not in a fun loving mood tonight i decide to help the hermit out

Had a few problems (floods and rock collapses), mainly due to a pistol shrimp named Rodney, he has now been rehomed and i have a hopefully stable system

BAY 1 - mechanical filtration and B.shrimp reactor
BAY 2 - fuge and PC light
BAY 3 - Heater, maxijet (&seaclone), eheim return and RO topup valve.

I don't even know what 1/2 these plugs do :(

Rock is stable and where i want it, i've some more animals and apart from a lovely gorg that is fragging its way to me mid-week i am pretty much done, i just need to sit back relax and enjoy finally!

Try sticking some blacklight tubes over your reef tank. I'm not sure why i bought myself a cold cathode black tube, but its been lying around for a while and i stuck it over the nano to see what happened. I was pretty amazed at what i saw. Pretty much nothing really except the parts of the corals that host the zooanthellae, they stick out like a real pretty sore thumb.
I know you get this effect with actinics, but with actinics you can also see a moderate amount of backgound, whereas with the black light all you can see are the zoo puppets hovering in the abyss (poetic i know )
The zooanthellae obviously like it as after having the light on for 10 mins the intensity increased dramatically.
I tried to take some photos, but obviously ue to a lack of light this proved to be difficult, so bear with me .... (photos don't do scene justice) - photos were taken with a long exposrue time
