There is much talk in the media of high levels of oestrogen in the water system from many sources including the human "Pill", having a detrimental effect on the reproductive success of fish in uk rivers. Given that we use the same water (after treatment) to fill our marine tanks does the panel believe that this could be inhibiting the successful breeding of captive species or would the treatment before our taps and subsequent RO filtration remove such a risk?

Here is just one of the many links that talks of the potential dangers. Friends of the Earth article (http://www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/briefings/html/19971215145310.html)

Thanks

Steve.

Interesting, especially as I breed fish!
I will read the article as soon as I get a chance but on initial thoughts I would have thought that an RO unit would remove the risk.
I use RO water for breeding the dottybacks and I have not noticed any problems in the development of male or female fish, nor do they have any problems breeding. So far F2 and F3 generation fish have developed normally and are able to reproduce.
I will read the article and get back to you.
