Hia

I don't currently run a UV steriliser in my tank but was considering running one especially after adding an Achilles Tang bearing in mind that I already have a Yellow Tang.

Is there less likelihood of the Tangs getting white spot with this piece of kit?

Or is it just another needless gadget?

I'd be interested to know the pros and cons of running one of these.

I don't have a sump so I don't know if that is a factor either.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Scott,

I used to run a UV on my tank - it was hooked up to the return from an external canister filter. When the bulb needed changing I couldn't be bothered to replace it, and after what I'd read about the UV killing good critters as well as the bad ones, I decided to remove it.

I only have one tang - a Regal Tang, supposedly a whitespot magnet (aren't they all!) - but she's never shown any sign of whitespot.

There was a good thread on here recently about whitespot in marine tanks - within the last week or two IIRC.

Personally, I'd spend the money on something else. Keeping your fish in tip-top condition is the best way of preventing whitespot.

HTH,

- Ian.

as above, i used one for a while as my regal tang kept getting whitespot - no other fish effected

after reading also about how they can kill off useful bugs, i removed it, and guess what - the regal tang has hardly ever had whitespot since! :)

so, in my opinion waste of money, waste of electricity, waste of space

Thanks for that.

I will spend the cash on live rock instead!

I like to keep things as simple as possible in the tank so the less contraptions the better I reckon.

My Achilles does have whitespot although there seems to be no signs on the Yellow Tang. At the moment all I am doing is trying to keep out of the tank and just keep a ready supply of seaweed in there with a hint of garlic guard. It is feeding and swimming about as normal so I think the key is not to panic. My shrimps have been leaping on him as well hopefully eating parasites.

Cheers

Would a Dwarf Cleaner Wrasse get on with a Banana Wrasse?

Thx

My cleaner wrasse is a jumper, you need some protection really. My tank glass sits high up from the water and he has not escaped yet. I have found him wriggling on a brace bar once. Great little fish tho, they are afraid of nothing!

Hi Scott. I have 8 tangs in my tank including a 7 inch Regal and i would not be without my cleaner wrasse as he keeps all my tangs and other fish clean. IMO UVs are useless unless you have the large ones that such as TMC and other fish wholealers use 2000Watts plus. I do however use ozone through a controller and find it very beneficial towards keeping whitespot out of my system. HTH. Eric.
