View Full Version : My Trigon 350
Hi All,
I thought I would start a thread on my progress and keep it updated:
Equipment I have so far:
Juwel Trigon 350 tank and stand
1 x Seio 1500 powerhead
1 x Prizm Deluxe protien skimmer
20 KG of live rock
30Lb Aguamax sugar sand
Juwel heater 300w
Juwel 1000 powerhead
Std T8 Lighting :(
The salt I am using is TMC Marine Pro.
So far I have added the water and sand, mixed up the salt water and added the live rock
I am currently getting the following readings from my tank as it begins cycleing:
PH - 8.1
Ammonia - 0.3 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate 5 ppm
Temp 79 F
SG - 1.026
SG is a bit high... i would bring it down to 1.023-1.024...
Why do you say it is a bit high?
NSW is 35 ppt Salinity which is normally taken as 1.026 SG (depending on the index, reference, and current temperatures)

I would say the SG is spot on. TBH I tend to run my tanks at 1.025 to allow it to increase due to evap....

I will probably bring it down slightly over time as it is on the high side of 1.026 probably 1.0265
The wierd thing was I had it spot on at about 1.0255 but then I added my LR and it jumped to where it is now :(
Tank Stats as of 10/12/05 :D
Live rock added (8/12/05)
Hi James
Just remember that stability is more important than text book readings

Thanks I will keep that in mind.
I have just re aquascaped it is basically a corner chape with a post in the middle and a cave/over hang. Hopefully getting another 20KG soon so it should get better!
Another hopefully showing the cave
looking good, all i would suggest is that your aquascape be moved slightly away from te glass, that way you can gain access everywhere, also the fish are more likely to swim around and through the rock work

Are you thinking of upgrading your lighting ??

Definatly :)
Thinking of the arcadia I bar, it is a replacement for the existing lighting bar but with T5's
I would ideally like to got Halide but I dont want to hang it from the roof and I dont like the way it ligts the whole room up so the I bar is ideal.
Update:
Added another Seio 1500 powerhead today :)
I also ditched the crappy Juwel 300W heater and went for a Fluval 300w it looks like a much better piece of kit and hopefullt it will keep the temp more stable aparently it has a digital thermostat and a pulsing system :D

Hopefully after next month it will calm down a bit!!
I doubt it....
looking good though, you should add a fluidising reactor so as you can run a P04 absorber to keep p04 in check and help keep algae under control.

Also got a red scooter blenny and a mandarin, just been reading that they are hard to feed :( note to self, research before buying. I am going to cultivate some pods for them and adding the sump should help :) I will keep an eye on them and if they get too thin I will take them back and hope the shop can rehabilitate them.
Blenny:

Cant get a pic of the mandarin at the mo he is hiding, will upload soon
Coming along nicely james
You could try dropping some enriched brineshrimp in front of the mandarin and it might start taking it. Once it easily accepts frozen food you're half way there
good work looks much better now the extra rock is in
you could get another 20 kg in there :P
Cheers Guys!!

That pic is a bit decieving, the curv of the tank makes the rocks look smaller (see attatched taken streight on!

Yeah going to try that at feeding time tonight
I could kick myself for buying him :( but he is so cute impulse buying is a terrible thing :(
They are great fish, it will survive if you put the time and effort in to begin with
A scotter AND a mandarin will wipe out pods pretty fast in an establish tank that size, let alone a new one.
I would return one now and see if you can get the other on frozen, if it doesnt take to it ASAP i'd return that as well.
I tried to get my mandarin on frozen as it went in a new tank - found it impossible and had to build a fuge which was seeded with multiple pod cultures.

The shop I got him from is not open on sundays and I cant get there in the week :( so it will have to be next weekend
I am going to do what jasandjules were saying by cultivating pods in a couple of coke bottles and add half of them to the tank twice weekly, hopefully that will keep them fed!

I can see your new crab on its perch:D
Lol yeah, he is still there now! he must like it there!!
Did your hair alge go away on it's own???
Yeah eventually, just run lots of phosphate remover. ALso my UV and ozone seems to have helped.
Is your sump in the cabinet below the tank?
Great looking reef btw:)
No my Trigon didnt have a sump :(
One of the reasons I upgraded: http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=192398
I assume that you decided that it was less hassle to upgrade your tank instead of drilling the trigon and adding weirs etc...?
That's the position i'm in at the moment, I am also looking at a tank from D&D, I could drill the trigon and buy a sump but reckon with all the additional pipework, drilling bits, sump pumps and sump, it's going to be cosing me the best part of £500....
So I might be better off in the longrun upgrading!
what are you referring to mate?
In a nutshell the only reason ive got a trigon is it's biggest tank i can fit in my frontroom without getting rid of my other halfs furniture, something i can live without, she cant.
500 seems ott to have a tank drilled i assume that includes the sump even so thats a rip
You could sell the trigon and get some cash for it and if you have room for a bigger tank then yes i would deffo not go for the trigon as they are a pain to set up, but it depends on what you want in the tank, a sump is a must imo, but you dont have to have one.
by many standards most trigons only contain fish and a few softies, then the need for a sump isnt needed as much, ive gone for a 30 gallon sump with cheato beacuase ive filled the tank with sps, this is something they need and i felt the need for it.
If you do decide to keep it they can still look great, the shape does have a natural look to it, and i'm over the moon by the way mine is taking shape,
But if i'm really honest i have wasted loads of money to get my tank looking the way it does, mainly on lights for it.
I know you're in a catch 22 the other half gave you the tank etc .... but if you can fit a 6 footer in the house then i would sell the trigon.
£500 is overestimated a little, should be no more than 200 even with high prices.
drill bit costs 15, piping & glue etc 50-70, tank 50 max from a good lfs, sump pump 30-40 on this forum or 60 new, that's it.
To be honest the 2 main reasons I upgraded were 1.) to hide all the equipment, it was everywhere and 2.) it was difficult looking through the curved glass on the trigon and a PITA to take any decent pictures and keep clean.
