Hi everyone, I'm in the process of setting up my new nano (or pico tank if you prefer).

Specs

40 litre tank (aqua 40 )
1kg liverock (can probably fit in another 2kg)
2x small internal filters (200 lph each)
100watt heater
1x half blue half white pl lamp (going to add another actinic)

In my lfs i've spotted a piece of coral which looks like porite coral but the only inhabitants i can see are two very small (2mm) pistol shrimps. From what i can see with the naked eye they are bright banana yellow with red markings around joint areas.

Now i find them very attractive but, are they a safe introduction ? Will they make a good study piece ?

Any comments suggestions on my set up or other suggestions as to a good study species greatly welcomed.
Cheers
Rich

Fantastic! :D I'd say go for the coral for your nano (I think pico is defined as less than 3 gallons  ). It's stuff like the stowaway pistol shrimps that make the hobby IMO - you couldn't get them to order and they may make fascinating subjects. All the same if they are 2 millimetres that's extremely well spotted and you'll certainly be able to add other stuff to keep your interest when you're not glued to the magnifying glass.

There are a species of hermit I think that make their home in porites type corals in much the same way as christmas tree worms.

Interested in seeing any photos if you do get them!

Sounds like your going to have a nice tank, nano reefs are so cool. you can spot so much more going on in the tank.... :D

Can you spot the pair of them in pic1 ?
The big dude is the size of a grain of rice and his mate above him is about the same size as the apostrophe on my keyboard.

Can anyone suggest any sort of breeding project for a tank this small ?

that's awesome!

Why not leave fish out of your tank altogether so a while? Your other tank members will thank you for it
