im no expert but i would only buy cured live rock as i understand uncured stinks, cured is the way i went, ive got about 50Kg of live rock in my tank.

I got most of my live rock from http://www.coralfarm.co.uk which i found to be of good quality. Their web sites appears to be broken at the minute though but the blokes mobile number is 07710 064058

Nice bloke, sounds like he is always too busy but the goods turn up when he says they will, he send them by TNT on a morning delivery next day. I paid about £180 for 20Kg or maybe it was 25Kg from him.

I dont think you will have any problems in sticking cured rock in your tank. Everyone steered me away from uncured.

Uncured would mean a lot of time and effort curing it. Don't bother, just get cured.

The only advantage in buying uncured is that you could stand to save a fair bit of money, especially on that quantity of rock as well as maybe preserving more life on the rock.

You need plenty of flow, water changes and a good skimmer to cure the rock, so doing it in an empty reef system should be ideal, if you can stand the smell!!

Would it not be worth buying the bulk of your rock as reef bones to bulk up the structure and then adding maybe 40kgs or so of live rock to top it off? it would be a lot cheaper!

see what i mean about people saying get cured! Someone was telling me that uncured will make your house smell like a big protein skimmer!

I think you could probably hget 200Kg of live rock from that bloke i said for about £600 - £800 at a guess, give him a call, i know the more you buy the cheaper it gets.

Just out of interest how big is your tank to put that much rock in it? Sounds like its going to be quite a big setup!

Always Buy Cured Live Rock........

Why always??

Granted it's a lot easier but it's for a completely new system so he has all the facilities to cure it himself. 200kg is a huge amount of live rock to pay out for when he could save himself enough money to buy a lot of very nice livestock.

Not a bad size at all!!

As you would have it in the house and no external curing facilities I would say go cured too - however, I don't think that the maxim "always go cured" is necessarily correct. If I had room in the garage I'd cure my own rock because I would have a lot more control over the process and do more water changes/provide more current/provide more light during that process than would typically happen if it was cured commercially, and so (hopefully) conserve more life.

if you have nothing in the tank i would buy uncured rock. your local lfs should give you a good deal on the amount you are after.

yes i agree that its not always necessary to go cured, but to be honest, if you havent got a clue what your doing and are new to it all, it would probably be best you buy cured instead of uncured.

Thats quite a big tank you have then! :-)

Ive just put some new photos on my site, its looking nice now.

if your going for so much, why not get a mixture of both, cure the uncured rock then add the cured, might take some time, but you'd get the best of both worlds!

p.s. post some pics of your tank, sounds like a monster!

FWIW i think you need to ask yourself what is the objective of curing your own rock?

If its simply cost then imho buying reefbones or similar would be more cost effective coupled with a proportion of LR.

If its to try to preserve more life on it then you need to have some knwledge, facilities and be guaranteed about where your rock is coming from ansd the timeframes. For example if you buy incured lr and its been sitting about for any length of time in somoens vats untreated then it may be no better than the cured lr you buy from them in terms of life on the rockwork
