Yours is going to be a jaw dropper.
Tony thats a topper, will you be going for bommies again?

Did you paint the back of the tank?
Is the wier blue glass or does it have a acrylic cover?

that looks great but also looks $$$$
Reef bloke
09-05-06, 16:41
Thanks peeps, the weir is blue(cover) with the glass painted either end.Bommies each end once again,i think im going to need more rock somehow lol.
It really didnt cost as much as it looks. Not much more than a Perc 120 to be honoust and that includes pipework and a sump(homemade).Mind you that didnt include lighting.
Thanks for the compliments,it looks nice at the mo but im sure i could turn it into a dogs dinner if i try hard enough lol.My cube is actually looking the best its ever looked at the mo apart from a few tuffs of Bryopsis(damn stuff!)so its going to be a shame to break it down.

Cheers mate,I nearly went 24" but SCOOB talked me into going 30" lol.Cant say im looking forward to the stretch to the bottom of the tank though.
We do have very similar tank specs JonB,spookkkyyyy!!!!!
what a loverly size for a fishtank!
:D
looking great tony....best advise i can give is to buy a couple of vests for tank maintainance!

Hi Tony - looks fab!
Is this the tank with the two standpipes inside the weir? I'm worried now as I see there is a grill at the bottom of the weir. Does this not mean that with the pumps off, the tank drains down to the height of the lower standpipe?
Hope I've got it wrong! :)

Reef bloke
23-05-06, 17:24
Yes Ian you have thankfully got it wrong lol. There is a glass weir(almost full height) thats sit inside the blue plastic one.
Also thanks to Ian for his double silent standpipe advice.I dont think ive forgotten anyone now apart from SCOOB and Pavlo.
Cheers chaps your all stars!

Thanks Clive for the kind comments. As for Envy, well its a baby compared to some giants and putting the looks of it aside 'its not what you got its what you do with it.'
I just hope my reef keeping skills can do it justice,im sure i could cock it up if i try hard enough lol.
Im happy with the way its set up though although its quite simple .
Corals and fish swap next, not looking forward to it!
bloomin' eck how have i missed this thread since now????
awesome tony, very neat job. massive cabinet as well, that skimmer shows how much internal space you have, ideal.
and don't blame me for the 30" depth, unlike short-round from indiana jones "you listen to me more you wont live longer". :)

Thanks peeps, fish and corals are in now,ill have to sort some more piccies out.Im really suffering for this tank,im allergic to milliput/deltec/Aquamedic putty and despite wearing gloves my eyes swell up and i itch for England especially around my scrotes.

Thats a cracking setup there Tony. If you dont mind me asking, where did you get the fuge lights from. as Id be interested in two of these for my new set-up.
Regards and keep up the good work.
Si.
Reef bloke
02-06-06, 17:55
Hi Si,the light units were cracking value at just over £20 each. They are only T8's but for fuge etc i think they are spot on.They are as light as a feather with built in ballast so can only assume they are electronic.
I purchased them from Swallows aquatics and they are branded as Aquaworld but dont think they have anything to do with our sponsor i dont think. They come in sizes from 2 foot to 5 foot i think and come with what looks like 10k tubes, the largest size is only £23 i think.Ill have to get you the model number off of it.
Scoob dont even go there, and no i didnt dangle my old chap in the tank to try and trigger a spawning event.
Right here are latest pictures, ignore the bit of diatom as after all its a new set up.

Hi Tony,
that tank's looking truly gorgeous! You can really tell a lot of thought and planning have gone into it.
Are you getting any problems with the Streams displacing sand?
If you're erm, still itching you might want to try some mild antihistamines :o
Cheers,
Sub
Reef bloke
02-06-06, 18:41
Im on the old antihistamines dude.I only had the ones that made you drowsy last night so sat staring at the tank like i was pished. Not itching now but still a bit sleepy. No probs will sand and streams, sand is very fine and doesnt even lift. They are only 6060's though.i think its where the tank is 30" deep, they turned my cube into a sand storm untill i covered the sand with a light coating of coral gravel. No probs in this one though.

Slapped some Deltec 5 foot mega twins in the hood for a splodge more of actinic(160 watts, woo hoo).Had to modify the endcaps slighty by setting the screws into the caps as they stuck out too far.

It played murder with my nerves,my old ring was a twitching something terrible.I was out with two other reefers that will remain anonymous at the time of acquisition.Get three blokes together and before long it seemed like a great idea.Once in the tank the nerves went and reality dawned lol.
I must say there are a pair of beautiful blue cheek triggers Ive got my eye on locally though.

Sailfin tang,4 bangais, regal tang, yellow tang,2 anthias, yellow wrasse, ornate wrasse, juvenile dragon wrasse(in sump at the mo).The sailfin,2 bangais and yellow wrasse are placed in a temp tank at the mo as my purple tang was a recent new addition and came down with white spot which has now almost gone.I didnt want to stock the main tank with too many fish all at once as well.

More change lol.I have swapped about my lighting.I was running a couple of Reeflux 10k 250's but they were far too pink and when i swapped them into my new 3 by 250 unit i notice that the ends were melting!
Nick at Coral culture came to the rescue and swapped them with 2 20k XM lamps.I have an old 10k reeflux which unlike the new ones has always been crisp white with a hint of blue and bunged it in the middle.Im getting very nice colour pop on the corals now although the par on the XM's is down a bit on 10k's which is to be expected.

O.K peeps yet another update, this time its had a total makeover!Basically Ive never been happy with the reef bones in the tank. They were large coral heads and although porous they didn't have much in the way of open structure. This kept all micro fauna out of the rock plus i really didn't have a decent balance of Live rock to bones.
Then i saw Fish are friends(Michael) had his very mature reef tank up for sale due to his move to Canada,i contacted him and he offered me the contents for an excellent price!
Anyway after arranging payment i phone Scoob who tells me I'm mad ,fair comment but i was too excited to listen.
Next morning the van was filled up with containers etc and off i went(moody missus in tow, someones got to carry the buckets)to East Sussex from North Kent.Mr John Cleese on my sat nav done me proud and i was there in 90 mins.
A warm welcome was waiting from Michael and a stared at the tank with a lump in my throat. How could a tear such i thing of beauty apart. There were/are some beatifully large acros, massive Lobophyllia and a self propagating Galaxia to name but a few gems.Luckily greed got the better of me and it wasn't long before i was baggin up.
Two hours later i was digging around in the bottom of the tank for Michaels sand bed(yes i am that greedy and it was good stuff!)
After Michael gave me sack fulls of electronic aquarium goodies FOC! we shook hands had a cuddle,Michael had a grizzle and we were off woo hoo.
We were tired and hungry when we arrived home but now we were on a roll.We had the rock bubbling away, stock placed in tanks and other heated and pumped vessels by about 12pm then we decided enough was enough and went to bed.
The morn was not much better, bags of blood, sweat and tears.Shifted all my stock and bones and re-aquas caped with the new rock which was covered in zoo and good stuff so placement was difficult. In then went Michael wonderful corals, what beauties there were and luckily no fatalities!
Milliputing everything in was so much fun!My arms were dead by now,my t shirt and floor soaked and the blessed corals decided that they would jump off the milliput every time i sat for a breather gggrrrrrr.
Anyhow to cut a long story short everything was back in by Monday evening. That evening Scoob and Maidstone marine came a visiting.I think they approved as the stood and nodded at each other and whispered something or another.
Anyway here are the pics of the way she is now,I'm happy so fingers crossed it stays this way. Also thanks for all the help my wife gave despite her constant whining.
Peace out Tony

Thanks again for all the compliments people!
Mysticwave, yes ive slapped two streams either side of the tank mounted on the rear glass facing into large caverns i aquascaped into the rock. This should keep detritus into suspension hopefully,i decided to set them up this way after seeing your tank. You can hardly see them from the display side.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/DSCF0196.jpg
Stevielad, The bones were very large and unlike most bones didnt have much in to way of in roads for microfauna. They did Denitrify as during cycling in a seperate vat i observed a drop of Nitrate from 100 - 0 in two weeks. They just seem to sit collected detritus and void of any life that may have jumped ship from the liverock that was scattered around the tank. They did colour up with coralline to a degree but they were so boulder like that they didnt look quite right.

Hi Tony,
Lovely tank, especially the healthy colours of the fish. I like the tunze blasting the caves idea, and was thinking of doing the same with some seios, but my big fish all sleep at the back under the rocks/reef rack, do you find your fish are using the caves anymore, or can they avoid the current?
Cheers
Richard.
Reef bloke
06-12-06, 18:16
The fish all manage to find a bed in the rock of a night, they avoid sitting directly infront of the streams but generally they are fine.Dont be tempted to stick them on a timer though to avoid the situation as fish might sleep in them and come the morm you will end up with sushi!
Stunning tank reef bloke, I cant believe it's taken me so long to see this thread....where have I been for the last year...doh
I'm currently waiting on a quote from classic cabinets, how have you found the ultima cabinet.....other than the problem you had with the cabinet feet...... Is the build quality good etc.

I have to be really honest here, seeing that puts not only a tear in my eye but also a chill down my spine.
two reasons
Firstly the tank and stock that is now so lovingly graced in Tonys tank was my life of constant struggles for over two years and to see it go is totally heart wrenching.
The second reason is that seeing the picture re affirms my strong belief the stock went to exactly the right person.
Tony you have done my stock so much justice i will keep hold of that picture and any others you may wish to post and send me. I know you felt guilty when you arrived and saw how much was there but i want you to really believe I do mean what i have said above and I know you will only make it better still.
if you can keep G and S together i would very much appreciate it they have been as one for over 5 years to my knowledge
Many thanks for the post
off for now to solute the empty tank in the living room and pay homage to the empty cupboard under the stairs

Dave-After my last lot of probs with my sps i was given that U.V unit by Michael(fish r friends bruce).Although i am pretty sure i traced my probs to the rusting impellers i couldnt rule out bacteria.I decided to stick a new lamp in the unit and run it inline before the skimmer. This way the skimmer will pick up any dead or dying matter.Im gonna run for six months then run without and suck it and see.
The next thing on the agenda may well be ozone, not sure yet though.

Cheers Mike lets hope so,hows the fish did it make it?
Yeah, they are all 100% fine. Decided to not stress everything out chasing em round the tank - did the water change with the new water mixed in the QT tank and then went away for 5 days over xmas.
Since we came back george has had no whitespot thats noticable and no other fish had any signs of it at any time. Perhaps 5 days of reduced lighting, quiet house and less stress were what was needed at the time ;)

been looking at your pics all very nice, just wondering about a few things, does the weir work well that u have i was thinking of having diaganal or box weirs at the corners of my 5x2x2, any idea if either is better ? , also the white urchin u have there looks nice, i assume he is reef safe, whats the name for that one ?, o and the containor next to he sump is that for ro ?
cheers chris
Reef bloke
06-01-07, 23:53
Hi Chris, the weir works very well with the double standpipe set up,very quite. The only prob with the center weir is that its quite imposing.Scoob has box weirs in the corners and are quite and take up little space. Not sure what the urchin is to be honest, his got quite big though now but doesn't touch the corals. He has a bit of a munch on the coralline but what urchin doesn't.
Thanks for the comments

i noticed in the middle of your sump u have a sheet of black egg crate, whats that for ?
Reef bloke
12-01-07, 23:54
Ah yes,the rock in the middle section stands on this. The theory was/is that water that comes into that section from underneath the baffle infront washes up and through the rock.I was also thinking of trying a deep sandbed suspended ontop of the crate so water filters through it from underneath but i think the flow through my sump is just too much.

Cheers
CC
Reef bloke
16-01-07, 00:50
The BTA in the pic is a daughter of one that Dantheman has now,the original mother coral went through a stage of looking stringy in the two years i had it.It always went stringy looking when it didnt get enough flow or enough light.I find if they get they are in just the right flow, light and i keep my water changes up it stays nice n bubbly.I have also found my rbta to be very forgiving when placed near corals although at the mo its only just brushing them but its growing well.
I also never feed my bta's.
Im also pretty sure ive got a pair of yellow tangs there(male and female),can you tell lol.

Richard the tank is booby trapped so beware,at least every time i go near it a suffer injuries. The Stream Magnets nearly broke one of my fingers this weekend a swear the tanks possessed lol.Its not that nice anyhow, yours knocks spots off it.It is on the viewing list in March although id like to say the pics dont do it justice but in this case you may feel they are better than seeing it in person lol.
Ross- Ill have to update the spec.I have two 6060's flushing out the rock work a 6000 and 6100 at either end of the tank plus a maxi jet 1200 in a dead spot and the return from an Ocean runner 6500.

Its Good Muppet Thursday down here, unfortunately Maidstone dropped our box browny and we cant take any pics at the mo,dang!
MikeW managed to knock up a cam made of an old Kitchen roll tube and an M&M but i last heard that his dog had chewed it up so no more pics for a while.
you're joking, i was set to borrow that tube next, goddammit wee man, and your daft little pookie!
Fear not, I have a box browny in the loft. I reckon I could rush out and get some film, take the shots and get them developed by the 25th no problem.

Very flattered mate, dont mind in the slightest.
Just read through this thread, and I take my hat of to you. A truly wonderful tank with awesome colours. Very very jealous and hope one day when the funds and time allow I have something that looks half as good. Well done!
There are some beautiful fish in there. Any chance of an updated fish stock list? Give me an idea of what sort of stock 300UK gallons can allow...

Equipment update:
I have installed a Profilux computer system, kalk stirrer and another skimmer.
I have kept my ap850 on the system too.The Profilux is doing a grand job and as really helped keep the system more stable.
The Kalk stirrer is to help keep my PH up at night but since adding the new skimmer Ph has gone up to 8.4 so may have to dial the stirrer down.
The Skimmer is an API 250 bubblemaster with threadwheel pumps, this thing kicks amazing amounts of air into the skimmer and im waiting for it to break in at the mo.
Ive upgraded the sump from 3 by 15 by 18 to 3 by 18 by 18 to fit the skimmer,im now also running the sump without an algae bed.
Heres a few before an after pics.
