Hi there folks,

Looking for some more genes for my Bangaiis.

I currently have 2 Bangaiis that breed on a regular basis. I am wanting to increase the gene pool that I have.

I am based in the Reading area.

Thanks

Steve

Hi, i maybe interested in this as I also have a pair the are constantly breeding & currently have 7 1cm babies in a nano, with the dad looking to drop again in the next few days. Once I have got to grips with raising them & maybe a more suitable nursery tank setup instead of a nano I may be up for swaping a few babies to increase the gene pool.

Sorry folks,

Have been away for a while and not had the chance to get onto the net.

I am in Wokingham to be precise and have just sold the last six that are ready to go. My male is carrying again and should drop about midway into the month. I will keep this batch for private purchase and not sell onto LFS'. If you want then drop me a note.

Kev, where are you based? I am definitely intertested in the increased Gene pool.Let me know.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

I'm in croydon, I've got 4 at the moment 2 each from 2 sources but no pair!!

So I'm looking to swap a couple out to try to make a pair or 2 pairs, one for a breeding system and one for my main reef.

Dark Stranger,

Sorry did not get your post emailed to me as normal and have only picked it up now.

I usually look at selling then off, either 6 weeks on, when they are feeding on frozen, or as a new batch are about to be released.

My male dropped the last lot, and only one made it to the sump. Lost the whole batch in the main tank. :(. Hopefully when I am back from America he will be carrying again, if the heat does not create a problem.

will,

I think you can only ever really be sure of their sex when the male is carrying the babies...

Here's a great guide to breeding them.

Bangaii breeding manual. (http://www.raingarden.us/banggaimanual.pdf)

Reproduction:
Sex differences =There is not a safe way to distinguish sex in this species. Beyond many anecdotic formulas, unless your fish are sexually mature, morphologically there is not a significant difference between sexes. Once the male is brooding/ the female very gravid (fat) or displaying to the male, then you can identify the individuals using any particular ( individual) marks – number/position- white spots, shape of the fins etc etc, but it only will work for those individuals already identified.

From that report and what you read from the more informed over on RC (who suggest there is really no way of sexing them), the jaw line thing is a bit of a myth.

How many do you have?

There are 2 options, you either try for a pair, you'll know pretty quick they stick to each other pretty tight if they pair up. Or mob the tank, buy 10-15 of them and that way your likely to get a few males carrying most of the time (but harder to keep the young because they get eaten, unless you have a few urchins!).

If they seem to pay each other no attention, probably best to separate them or they will in time "do each other in".

Jimmy,

In the pair that I have there is a distinct difference in the jaw line and the size of the first fin. Secondly the male that I have is slightly smaller than the female. This is predominantly how I tell the two apart, except when the male is carrying eggs because then it is real obvious.

The sad thing is that everyone does the paring thing differently, and as there is no 100% clear way to do it, it is very difficult. For starters, it would be great to get pictures of the fish that are facing the same way, and then it is a guess from there.

Sorry that I cannot help you any further.

Jimmy,

The quote below is from a contact article on Bangaii Breeding.

Sexing Banggais

This is the most asked question I receive, and the one question I cannot answer fully. Even though I have seen over 300 banggaiÔs I am only 50/50 on juvenile animals (animals under 1-1.5inches SVL). When the animals reach sexual maturity (12-14 months), then the jawline takes on a characteristic structure, particularly the male which gets squared off. The second dorsal fin is an excellent characteristic, as the males second dorsal extends past the caudal peduncle, however this flowing fin is often nipped off by other fish. The most accurate sexing method: My best method of sexing banggaiÕs is using my establish male [the original male banggai from the article]. I introduce another banggai into his tank and within 10 mins he either is trying to kill him (male) or trying to mate with it (female)...HE IS 100% ACCURATE!!! I have sexed many friends banggai this way. Alternatively you can buy 4 or 5 banggais allow then to reach sexual maturity and they will pair off, and please, please, return the unpaired banggais

Hope this helps.
