 Right I'm thinking (starting) a quarantine tank 36L x 18H x 15W. As money is allways an isue what is the basic tank that I will need ie: skimmer sump lighting lr dsb or will under sand filter do like in tropical tanks as this is not a long term tank what do I need. Any info is better than none and I dont think im on my own asking this question but I will ask anyway. so please post what you know. It will help me and others and make reef keeping safer ( less gamble = more money = better tanks )........ thanks..Brian

If it helps, my quarantine tanks is a aquaone ar380 with no sand , no LR , just some piping for fish to hide and feel safe. i just run the filter that comes with the tank, nothing fancy

Cheers

you make it to much like a full blown tank you will have fish in it all the time and then be setting another qt tank up ;)

I should have thought that you would want to avoid sand, rock etc. etc.

Many types of medication will kill the invertebrates living in the sand/rock, which won't help matters. Plus you need to maintain them, even when the tank is not needed. Plus they may provide an environment for parasites (or their eggs/spores) to live (at least for some time) once they are introduced by the fish.

Something as sterile as possible, and as simple to maintain as possible (or just pack away). Which doesn't preclude providing hiding places for stressed out and sick fish....as John says, a few pieces of pipework, stuff that can be disinfected and stored. It doesn't have to look pretty or natural.

Just some thoughts - I don't have any relevant experience, hopefully a few more will pop round.

A bare tank causes reflections everywhere and the fish could become disorientated I would paint the bottom a sandy colour and the back and sides blue other wise as above just a few bits of pipe for hiding places. You could also get a small internal filter and run it in your sump until its needed in the quarantine tank as things can go wrong very quickly in a small tank without a biological filter.

As most folks have said, keep it simple. Have a read of this:

Indeep you just need a simple internal filter, a heater, water from main tank. Keep tank bare, use PVC pipe for fish to hide in.

Aerate the tank so plenty of oxygen, maybe lower SG to around 1.20 -1.19 so fish can use extra energy to fight of infection instead of using it to shed salt.

Do 20% water change a week using water from main tank you should be fine. I'll say it again UV, Garlic, reef safe stuff does not work on ich/ whitespot/oodinium the best solution is cupramine or copper safe.

Reading the article and many other threads the thoughts are that you should quarentine everything corals, fish etc.

The only problem with this method is that I think you will need 2 tanks, one which you administer copper treatments and another where there is never any copper treatment for inverts etc.

Just my two pennies worth.

think i use a bigish plastic type tub for treatments ,copper ,etc
which could be kept for that purpose or binned after,
