Hi all,
is it possible to get blue or purple SPS's in this country.? I have been waiting and searching patiently for months but they just do not seem to exist over here.
regards,Anthony

P.S. I'm referring more to acros than monti plates as I know there are purple plating montis knoacking about(I have one, cheers Chris)

As i am sure you are aware the colours of corals are greatly influenced by your lighting.

I have got a few purple and blue Acropora in my tank which i got from STM, they are Mariculture, which basically means they are frags that are grown in the ocean at a depth of about 7M.... This means that they are not use to being dumped under 250W MH straight away.....

STM are a sponsor so drop them a mail. Chris, Mark, or Jez will only be all to happy to help.

Cheers,

Chris

I too have a few blue and purple acros.
Some of which i did get off Chris so drop him a PM. Also as well as monti plates the Digitata also can be found in both blue and purple!

Just keep looking they are out there.

Although there not 10 a penny they do come up quite often, ask about and get some frags if you cant find a whole colony in the shops. Beware of some shops selling bleached out acros under blue lights making them look very pale blue, seen this more than once over the years.

I've got blues and purples, they're not difficult to find! Like Chris said a lot is down to lighting, all of mine started off as brown acros!

I have looked:mad:

Also it's ok saying look for brown acros but how do you know they are blue ones in disguise:o

Any chance of photos of your blueies ?

I accept that lighting and water conditions play a major part in the colouration of corals.

Why waste £50-75 on a wild colony that may not stay the colour you want in your tank conditions? (and maybe die?)

If somebody has frags of the colour you want buy 2 or 3 and place them together and let them form their own colony.

FWIW

I never said "WILD". I agree with you I'd definately prefer not to buy wild. And buying frags in groups of the same type is a good idea:)

Nice examples Cyno,

They look like STM Mariculture ?

I have a couple the same size and shape.

Clayton at ReefWorks (http://www.reefworks.co.uk) is selling blue Acros, plus various blue/purple plating and branching montiporas.

Cheers guys.
Lovely corals Cyno, are they from STM ?
I guess I must stop looking at the American sites as they seem to have access to solid blue corals rather than just blue-tipped

Anthony

Dont think I know of anybody that sells homegrown colonys (anybody??), anything I see colony wise is either collected wild or maricultured (is that the right word?) - where frags are grown on in the ocean (cultured but still wild conditions if you see what I mean).

The blue stag I had in this tank was solid blue when the nutrient levels were low, pics in this thread dont show the best colours as I had nutrient/hair algae probs at the time.

alot of the american corals you see in pics have been photoshoped they are almost irredecent in colour , i started a thread many months ago about americans having more colourful corals , but it is there are just better than us at pics and photoshop!
ok some frags in america are solid blue etc , i like to add brown acros now just to see what colour they change into !
20k lights seem to favour purples blues greens etc , 10k etc pinks ....... so i have been told !

They do have a website I'll PM as theyr'e not a sponser (yet!), they had had a west london reef club met on friday night and there's a thread on it in the local reef section with details of location etc.....

Anthony i was at reef encounters on Friday and to be honest i wasnt impressed! Alot of the stock wasnt 100% healthy, acros dieing from the base and a few fish looking quite ill and skinny!
Also they way the stock was arranged was odd(mandarines in BB tanks with no rocks etc when there was small inverts systems free!
I also think they were extreamly expencive! also any acro will look blue/purple when directly under atinics!

Just my opinion!

naso,

I have to disagree, £50 odd quid for a nice blue acro plus 10% they gave us at the wlrc meet seems reasonable to me. I have always bought my stock from him and has always been fine, I know they have just moved so so parts are still in the process of being finished.......

Anthony.

I was also at reef encounters on Friday and have to agree with cyno.
Some of the best acro's and stock i've seen recently and i've been around a lot of lfs in the south east area of late.

All the fish looked very healthy. I totally disagree with Naso the prices i thought were very fair for what you are buying throughout all the stock.
Well well worth a visit and bearing in mind this guy only moved into a new shop a month or so ago, it is certainly much better than my lfs.

Anthony. Well worth the trip in my opinion and i don't think you'll be disappointed and best of all it's only 5 mins off of the M25 junct 16.

a mate of mine only got 5%!!!
At heritage we all got 30%!!

The acros were nothing fantastic IMO and the''best ones'' looked that good because they were 4'' away from an atinic!
i would of expected much more stock considering the event!
It was one of the most expencive shops ive seen!

not all the fish were healthy
one of the bluethrouts was skinny
a very ill 6'' long regal tang
3 little regals not looking to chuffed
to roppy blue reef chromis
the worst purple tang ive ever seen
very skinny yellow tangs
asfar angel again not looking good(about 1"long and £90)

I got the impression they hadnt goneto much effort to get different stock!

The livestock arangment was odd as well i can go in to that to!
I dont know maybe i look at fish to closely!

Im not saying its the worse lfs ive seen, the shop was clean and tidy but i wont be going again(just not nworth the trip)
mind you it was nice to meet you marc!

You must not have had a look at the Reefworks website mate ;) . Everything that we sell is cultured here in the UK by us. Some of the colonies we have had in captivity for 10 years! Everything is about as adapted to captivity as it can get and far less problems with colour loss than wild collected specimens :D

"You must not have had a look at the Reefworks website mate "

Cant say I have but I'm not into coral much at the moment so havent been looking, its good that there is a supplyer of tank grown colonys (as well as frags) at last - hopefully it will put the kybosh on some of the wild imports.
